Boot Messages When linux boots there is a plethora of messages which really bugs me. Can I have a simple message like "Welcome To Linux" when I boot into linux instead of those overwhelming messages (those telling me my processor type, HDD type etc...or the ones telling me that the startup services are ' [ OK ] ' ) Mail Server Can I set up my own mail server ? In the PCQ's latest issue there are instructions on setting it in intranet. Can I set it up on my workstation ? Is there some site giving all the instructions Has someone among you tried it? Linux and Multimedia Yesterday I played a mpg file for the first time on linux and I was very disppointed by the performance . The file was almost played in slow motion :-( Windows media player gave me a better performance.Guess Linux and multimedia don't go well together . Kernel Comiplation I am relatively new to linux and when I get some major problems I get atleast one suggestion to ' compile the kernel ' . What does it mean? I only know C and Pascal programming . Can someone enlighten me please.

Using precompiled kernel

I just compiled linux-2.4.6 on RH 7.1 from the PCQ CD. Now, for some reason I want to remove my ext2 partition. I will be reinstalling RH later. So, in order to use the kernel I had compiled earlier, which files, other than the kernel image, do I need to backup. The modules/2.4.6 directory? Also, System.map-2.4.6 maybe? Hallo friends, I am a beginner of Linux. I am about to shift my Novell netware platform to Linux. We are having one PIII 733 64 MB Ram, 20 GB HDD server and 10 diskless nodes. Please help me to sort out the problems. 1. Can I install Linux in the server and configure the diskless nodes under linux. Or all diskless nodes must have hard disk and I have to install work station in it. 2. Can I run the existing clipper programs in Linux. Or what is the alterations I have to make in Clipper programs to run under Linux. 3. What is the other alternative for Clipper, if I can't run clipper programs under Linux. 4. What is the minmum configuration required for server and workstations (Our nodes are Pentium 100s with 16 MB RAM) 5. Can the X windows can be accessed through diskless nodes. 6. Can I share the Internet/email using a Proxy server and diskless nodes. We are having one unlimited Satyam dailup connection, which is dailed through ordinary BSNL Line. Hello people, i need some advice : Is it possible to give the Sun Certified Java Programmer exam without undergoing trainig in India. The Sun FAQ explicitly states that it is but the centres' list does not contain any Testing Centre in India. Are there any ? Also is there any standard certification test for C and C++. by standard i mean here something that is accepted in the industry.If so which and where can i give them. Finally something way way OT : I was told by some seniors that official certification like Sun Java Certification etc is given credit when applying for admission to US colleges after GRE If there are any (ex) engineering students around, can someone tell me if this is true ? I believe, you *have found* a bug! my friend :-) I think you should post your problem to the Linux newsgroups as well as send copies to the maintainers of XMMS, mp123, FreeAMP etc., But, do read there *bugs* section first before posting. Save yourself

I run XFig on Solaris, with desktop exported to my linux box. Within a few seconds of starting XFig, I get this error: No Response to the Save Yourself command. The program may be slow, stopped or broken. You may wait for it to respond or remove it. Stop It Now Wait The program has not stopped, is not slow and is not broken. I am using it while this error shows up, and using it well. Everything works perfectly. I could just put this window in the background, but it pops up every now and then. Any ideas? It doesn't happen everytime. In fact, happens at random. In my experience, this error normally occurs when one tries to stop X while some app is running. However, I am not trying to stop X. In fact, the only reason for starting X was to run xfig. Odd problem with reading CD-ROMs

Hi all, Okay, I have a odd problem here reading a CD. I have a CD full of MP3s which was burned by a friend of mine who burned by some software on Windows. So, unfortunately, my Linux box is not able to see it correctly. It is able to see only some of the mp3 files, not all. That is not the problem though. The problem is that I am not able to play the mp3 files properly. During the decoding of mp3 file, mpg123 gives me the following type of error : Illegal Audio-MPEG-Header 0x27240dc1 at offset 0x400e6. Skipped 292 bytes in input. It does not stop decoding, but the output is not proper whenever the error occurs (since it keeps on skipping some part of the file). I get many more such errors while the song is playing. I have verified that the CD is not damaged, and nor it is corrupt, because in Windows with WinAmp I don't find any such problem. NOW comes the odd part. I am using kernel 2.4.6, Red Hat 6.2. (highly modified then the standard distro). If I use the old kernel - 2.2.16, I *don't* get the above mentioned problem. The mp3 file from the CD gets decoded without any problem. I have tried using kernel 2.4.3, 2.4.5, and of course the current 2.4.6. But with all of them the problem persits, but with the old kernel there are no problems whatsoever. I tried to play the other mp3 files and with those files also some error is always reported by mpg123 (while decoding) and then it skips some input of the file. I tried using xmms, mp3blaster also. All of them give error exactly at the same spot of the song. And with *all* of them there is no problem with the old kernel (2.2.16). I also tried using the latest versions of mpg123, mp3blaster and xmms. But still the same thing. With all of them I don't get any errors with the old kernel, but with the new kernel (2.4.x), I still get errors. Could it be that there are any changes in the drivers for CD-ROM which could be causing the problem ? When I boot into the new kernel (2.4.x) I get the following boot message, hdd: CREATIVECD4820E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive With the old kernel (2.2.16) I get, hdd: CREATIVECD4820E, ATAPI CDROM drive Note the "CD/DVD-ROM" in the new kernel and only "CDROM" in the old kernel. Could this be driver problem ? Has anyone faced a similar problem. Regards, Rajen. I installed RedHat Linux 7.0 but during installation I need to partition my HDD like c: 6GB and linux 4GB Now the problem is I couldn't recover my remaining space in HDD. "hda=nodma" at the LILO boot prompt after "linux" or whatever label that you have choosen. e.g, LILO: linux hda=nodma if this works then you can add the following line to /etc/lilo.conf append="hda=nodma" .....and rerun `lilo'. *Yes* Disabling DMA affects Disk read/write performance. *BEWARE* I am only hypothesizing!! (oooops) Please read the kernel documentation. I am currently running kernel 2.2.14 (yeah, I know, has a bug). I don't have the kernel-docs on my system right now. You could get more (definitive) info under /usr/src/linux/Documentaion/*

Can't connect to Rolta thru' Linux

Hi all Luggers!! Is there anyone one the lug who is using RoltaNet's dialup net services? I've been facing problems in connecting to the RoltaNet .. The logs say that I can connect to their server but then while logging on to the network, the connection hangs ,, And it even blocks my internal modem,i.e. I can't even kill the connection .. If anyone was successful in setting up dialup connection to the RoltaNet then please help me .. Connection to the VSNL dialup connection is absolutely fine and to my surprise it's much faster than what I used to get with Windows !! p.s : Contacted RoltaNet help center, but they said they din't know anything abt Linux and refused to help ..
