Problems with Partition Table

Hi all Luggers ! On my home PC I have 10GB hdd in which there are three primary partitions - 6gb,2gb,2gb .. Win98 is installed on the first partition and the second partition also belongs to Win98 .. Linux is installed on the last partition in which I have 2 logical partitions one for Root(/) and the other for the Swap partition Before installing Linux, Win98 showed me both the partitions correctly as c: and d: as the last one was kept unused for installing Linux.. However after installing Linux, Win98 shows 3 partitions as c,d and e where e: shows the contents of what previously belonged to d: and now the d: show me an error message of "Invalid media reading drive d " In other words the positions of both the partitions are swapped (from win98 point of view) Even worse I can't access the second partition from the dos prompt .. In linux things are as they shud be and I can mount both the Win98 partitions properly .. Please help me Thanks in advance Warm Regards, $ sonpal -kj

x win problems

hi all, there is an observation with regards to KDE manager (i am not sure if others behave similarly). if you put the machine in screen saver mode (password protected ) and press ctl+alt+bs then xwin gets killed (actually it should not because autherization is not confirmed) and gives open access to the account! (even if it was logging the user out it would have been fine). is there anyway to stop this? ulhas

Compressed files

Are *.gz files really compressed into smaller sizes? Because when I open a gzipped file using WinZip, the compression ratio always reads 0%, and after extracting the conctents of a gzipped file and adding up the file sizes, it totals the size of the *.gz file. So where's the compression? Also, which one can give the maximum compression, gzip or bzip? - Shrikant p.s:- is it my imagination, or are duels getting rather prolix?

Kernel Compiling

Hi, Thanx guys, for all the support and encouragement. I had another linux installation at home and tried compiling it at home with a new kernel 2.4.4, which i dowloaded from kernel.org I managed compiling it and also booting into it. However before i got too excited, i found that i set my eth0 wrong. I tried to linuxconf and netconf and both gave me pipe broken error. Do i have to recompile and if i do what do i have to take care? About the upmteen problems that i faced in my office installation I think i will reinstall RHL 6.2 once again and then try to compile to the new version. The basic problem I had was gcc/cc was not installed and therefore i could not compile. Will try installing an older version of gcc. unable to make menuconfig

Hi Luggers, It all started after I started to upgrade my kernel from 2.2 to 2.4.2 as philip suggested, i untarred the 2.4.1 kernel but was unable to add the patch. While applying the 2.4.2 patch, it gave me an error : patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line unexpected end of line in patch. I continued to make menuconfig. and got the following error: rm -f include/asm ( cd include ; ln -sf asm-i386 asm) make -C scripts/lxdialog all make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.1/scripts/lxdialog' >>Unable to find the Ncurses libraries. >> >>You must have Ncurses installed in order >>to use 'make menuconfig' make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.1/scripts/lxdialog' i already have it installed. i.e ncurses3-1.9.9e-11.i386.rpm and ncurses-5.0-11.i386.rpm Then i downloaded gcc-2.96-54 which gave me an rpm error saying major numbers <=3 are supported. So i am upgrading rpm to 4.0.1-0.6x and it is giving me an error failed dependencies libdb-3.1.so is meeded. Am i going in circles. Is there a simpler way. Please advise. A., NCST Venue: Lecture Theatre, NCST, Juhu Abstract:Data compression techniques are applied to files to reduce their size, which in turn increases the capacity of data storage and speeds up data transmission. Data compression draws heavily from information theory, which deals with the probability of some symbol appearing in the input. For totally random sources, each symbol is equally likely, but random sources are uncompressible. This means that the more probable an event, the less information it contains. Data compression techniques also work on this principle. If we look at real-world files, we find a lot of redundant data in them. Data compression exploits this redundancy to its advantage. Hello There, I need to know If there is an online (dowloadable or otherwise) verion of a good book on C/C++ like Dennis Ritchie / Bjarne Stroustroup... Ditto for Unix. N/W prog. like Richard Stevens... I had seen the 2nd Edition and felt it was mostly about how different commands work..And feel I can get this info from MAN... Or am I wrong? BTW who is the publisher for: - 8. The Art of Computer Programming, Vols. 1 - 3 (just do Vol 1 first, else you'll reel under information overload!) - Donald E. Knuth I wanted to see the " contents ", if the publisher has a website. I wud be thankful If somone posts the ISBN no. of this book :) Thnx. for the help in advance...
