hello all, I am happy to announce that we have already gone pritty much ahead in the first deployment of GNUKhata at Comet Media Foundation and have got a few other interested parties. While this is a great news for the GNUKhata project, we have made some drastic changes to GNUKhata which has resulted in a practical improvement of the software to a large degree. Thanks to all of you specially Kenneth, JTD, Mehul and many many others. Right now we need Some people to test the new source. There are 2 branches of GNUKhata, the bleeding edge is http://gnukhata.gnulinux.in/svn/gnukhata_alpha and the stable version is http://gnukhata.gnulinux.in/svn/trunk. Some of the major improvements include the way gnukhata is installed. A database can be setup using the client itself specially on the first time lonch of the front-end. We have also incorporated a lot of things based on the feedback we hav got. I would be intersted to know how people feel about this. right now due to some reason the mailing lists are down at the sid-india server so I can't get through. Hardware Compatibility List for Debian

Hi, Maybe the question has been asked already and I could find one of the posts by Wouter Verhelst where he has mentioned about some kind of installer which can be used for Hardware Compatibility Testing. I need to deploy Debian for purpose of running a web service based application on JBoss. My first worries are about purchase of hardware for this project and I am pretty much stuck up as no major vendor except HP is providing support for Debian and pushing the idea of installing a unsupported OS to top management would not be an easy task as well. Is there any way in which I can be assured and hence push my top management to move to Debian despite it not being supported by major hardware vendors ? I know that's more of a management issue then technical but if there is someway through which I can find compatibility of Debian with different servers provided by various vendors (primarily HP, Dell and IBM) then it would be really helpful for me in decision making. I tried to install Debian 5.0 on a HCL Infinity Global Line 2700 series server and the installation went hassle free, however when I did lspci -n and tried to verify the compatibility using the web based utility provided at http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl I was surprised to see several hardware components as not being supported. Can I consider the report displayed by http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl as final and dump my idea of installation of Debian or will the lack of support for some of the drivers won't have much effect on functioning of my system. This is the question which is worrying me the most as of now, because I don't want my servers to hang up in middle of operations at later stage and it would be really nice if someone can help me out on this front. Also if possible please let me know how to find which all hardware is supported by a specific kernel. For e.g. I'm using kernel 2.6.22-3-486 and would like to know which all hardware components does it support. If there is someway to find a categorical list of such hardware components then that would be lot more helpful. Thanking you for your kind concern. Regards, Mayank

Hi All, I'm using Openoffice 3.0 on Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 Desktop. I wanted to type With Marathi/Hindi (pneumatic) font in Openoffice 3.x version. Can you suggest me any font with which I can do this? Beware of Intel 4965AGN Wifi issues

I recently came upon a weird and obscure problem with Ubuntu 9.04 and intel 4965AGN wireless adapters. Apparently in an area with a high density of access points one cannot connect. This was / is a known issue ( http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1885 ). I believe this maybe a regression. I switched to Fedora 11 and kernel 2.6.29 and upwards dont exhibit the same issue. Just a heads up for everyone! -- Regards, Dinesh A. Joshi

Ubuntu 9.04 / Karmic Koala Alpha4

Wanted to give ubuntu a spin. So downloaded the ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso and burned to cd. Then booted. Splash screen comes up with the language option followed by Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer. Then nothing. Hit enter. still nothing Check all the options and try to edit the command line. No go. Same with karmic Koala Alpha4 so what witch craft is needed to proceed beyond the splash screen? -- Rgds JTD

Hi, Have you investigated these fonts: Gargi, Lohit Hindi (FOSS) and Shivaji or Shusha (proprietary). Keymaps are different to fonts. A keymap is the relationship between keyboard keys and alphabets. E.g-- in Hindi bolnagri, type p and you get the hindi letter 'pa'. In Remington, typing p will yield some other letter. Type in whatever keymap you want. It's up to you. Just make sure, before saving the file, select the text and you save it in the above fonts. If you want to email the doc/odf file, simply also email the font. When the recipients install that font, they will be able to read your document. Hope this helps.

Wiki: Protected mode? Block it?

List, I've been trying to clean spam for quite sometime (months?) but the attacks have increased severely. It actually doesn't make sense to just manually delete every page created by the bot, because it is easy for the bot to do it, but it a tedious process to clean it and wait for its next attack! Is there a 'protected-mode' for this wiki, for the time-being till it is upgraded? Or can it be blocked, till it is upgraded to a better CMS? I guess, I may be asking for too much, but the wiki needs to be saved from spam bots. Can the super-admins block the wiki? or do something like that? -- Roshan Baladhanvi

any tool to split and join large files

In windows there were many GUI programs that could split large files and then join the fragments as required. But i couldnot find any programs in ubuntu/linux yet. "split" works only for text files, i think and so does "join" on the commandline. It would be good to know about some GUI programs which could give similar functionality as found under windows applications. Kussh

Flag to detect presence of usb modem?

Hello, What is the system's flag to detect the presence and absence of a usb modem that gets up on /dev/ttyACM0 when plugged in? I need to put that line in a cron based script running every minute to automatically trigger a dialup connection whenever a usb modem is plugged in and shut it down whenever it is pulled out. The recent flood on 'visarjan' day has knocked out my client's telephone lines and triband too has stopped after the 24 hour period. I don't want to give any admin access to the users. Whenever triband will be down, this usb modem will be their alternate connection. Simply plug it in and use. I only need the line to check for the presence and absence of a usb modem on ttyACM0. Need help with writing a shell script

Dear linuxers, Needing to regularly backup my work, and having recently developed an interest in shell commands, I wrote myself a script that backed up a particular file; renamed the previous backup; and then unmounted the pen drive. Fairly beginner stuff but a time-and-effort-saver. I was wondering if I could add to this script the capability to make a net backup-- invoke wvdial, fire up evolution; in evolution, mail to gmail; then close evolution; then close wvdial (I use Rel. Netconnect, so wvdial); and write me a logfile which I could check. I'm on Ubuntu 9.04. I'd heard that g/lin is great for automating stuff like this. Would appreciate your help. Do tell me what additional information you would require. I'm sure this script will help many beginners like me. Thanks and regards Suhit Kelkar
