All the recent threats to digital netigens are arising due to ignoring the visionary warnings RMS gave us several decades ago. Whether it is a threat to privacy, or the dangers of cloud computing. The 'open source' vision though may have spread the development of technology, it failed miserably in adhering to the ethical and political dimensions of the movement. I think it is relevant to discuss such issues and awaken the community to why we still need to address the issues of software freedom. RMS will be in India during early 2019. Would any of you be interested in coordinating with me to check for a good venue and to find a host in the first week of January. The date will be around 7th of Jan, + or - one day. -- GN

The meeting started exactly at 3 pm.In the beginning, speaker Sooraj Dhanuka explained the terms Blue Ocean and Red Ocean. Most of the attendees were not aware of these terms. "Blue ocean" is a slang term for the uncontested market space for an unknown industry or innovation. Blue oceans are sectors associated with high potential profits.In an established industry, companies compete with each other for every piece of available market share. The competition is often so intense that some firms cannot sustain themselves. This type of industry describes a red ocean, representing saturated market share bloodied by competition. Sooraj then gave lot of examples of how the Blue oceans gradually became Red. Later, he gave examples of FOSS related blue oceans and the opportunities for startups. He descirbed his own experience when he tried to explore those sectors.It was an interesting speech, especially for students who could take some inspiration from Sooraj. In the next session we had lot of discussion on various activities that ILUG-BOM would like to initiate. The team asked new participants about what they really expect from ILUG meets. It was then decided to conduct sessions for Students, Teachers and Computer Novices on basic skills like - using Linux,using Libre Office, creating Word Press Websites etc.

Multiseat setup

Has anyone done a multi seat setup? I am trying to do it with lightdm which is supposed to have built in ability for multiseat. I am able to get two mouse pointers but not independent. I get two keyboards but working as one. Thanks everyone for submitting the bid for DebConf in India. If we are thinking of IIT Mumbai as a venue for DebConf 20, then we need to make sure that IIT Mumbai gives us solid WiFi and mobile carrier signals in the campus. During the Mini-DebConf there, we had big issues with internet connectivity. This is something which we can easily fix with help of current students. We have good volunteer numbers in Pune and Mumbai combined, for on the ground support before the event (if it does happen). Also, Mumbai has many hotels to accommodate a large contingent and the IIT campus is large enough to accommodate multiple parallel tracks. Plus, we have many good sightseeing places nearby the city. Ubuntu 18.04 Custom Image

Hi, I came across two recent blogs on how to create custom build for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. https://www.google.com/amp/s/linoxide.com/linux-how-to/create-custom-live-c… https://news.softpedia.com/news/you-can-now-create-your-own-ubuntu-18-04-lt… We do have two custom images, Fedora and Debian ( Thanks to Rajeev and Raghu). But Ubuntu is also a very popular distribution. Few schools may request ILUG -Team to install Ubuntu in future. It is difficult to build custom image for an average user. Also there is no proper help or documentation. We can even arrange a session in our monthly meetings and try it there itself. This workshop is aimed at answering questions like these, in depth, and also help everyone build packages for Debian. To help us all with packaging, we've invited a distinguished personality from the Debian Project, Pirate Praveen. Praveen is a Debian Developer and maintains a lot of packages in the Debian project. You can find out more about Praveen on his Debian wiki page.[2] The workshop will be held at Reserved-bit[3]. This workshop is open to all and there are no registration fees. However, note that we have limited seating capacity at the venue. Seating arrangement will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. The workshop will span over two days (09th June and 10th June 2018), so everyone can be rest assured that all the points will be covered in depth. Don't forget to bring your laptops!
