The Air Force still used eight-inch floppy disks

Five years after CBS publicized <https://www.cbsnews.com/news/whos-minding-the-nuclear-weapons/> the fact that the Air Force still used eight-inch floppy disks to store data critical to operating the Air Force’s intercontinental ballistic missile command, the aerial and space warfare service branch decided it was time to officially retire them <https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/10/air-force-finally-re…> . The system, once called the Strategic Air Command Digital Network <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Air_Command_Digital_Information_Net…> (SACDIN), relied on IBM Series/1 computers installed by the Air Force at Minuteman II missile sites in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite the contention by the Air Force at the time of the 60 Minutes report that the archaic hardware offered a cybersecurity advantage, the service has completed an upgrade to what is now known as the Strategic Automated Command and Control System (SACCS), as Defense News reports <https://www.c4isrnet.com/air/2019/10/17/the-us-nuclear-forces-dr-strangelov…>. SAACS is an upgrade that swaps the floppy disk system for what Lt. Col. Jason Rossi, commander of the Air Force’s 595th Strategic Communications Squadron, described as a “highly secure solid state digital storage solution.” The floppy drives were fully retired in June. But the IBM Series/1 computers remain, in part because of their reliability and security. And it’s not clear whether other upgrades to “modernize” the system have been completed. M$ Japan tried 4-Day Workweek

MS Power User reports on the results of a 2,300-employee experiment by Microsoft with a four-day work week: In August this year, Microsoft Japan ran an experiment where for one month they had a 3 day weekend, taking Friday off. This was paid leave and did not impact the worker’s usual vacation allocation. Some results were predictable. Workers were happier and took 25.4 percent fewer days off during the month. There were also savings from spending less time at work. 23.1 percent less electricity was used and 58.7 percent fewer pages were printed. More importantly from a bottom-line standpoint, however, productivity went up 39.9%, as fewer and shorter meetings were held, often virtually rather than in person. Finland Is Making Its Online AI Crash Course Free To the World

Last year, Finland launched a free online crash course in artificial intelligence with the aim of educating its citizens about the new technology. Now, as a Christmas present to the world, the European nation is making the six week program available for anyone to take. The Verge reports: Strictly speaking, it’s a present for the European Union. Finland is relinquishing the EU’s rotating presidency at the end of the year, and decided to translate its course into every EU language as a gift to citizens. But there aren’t any geographical restrictions as to who can take the course, so really it’s to the world’s benefit. The course certainly proved itself in Finland, with more than 1 percent of the Nordic nation’s 5.5 million citizens signing up. BlackBox software file server for free

Dear Linux gurus and enthusiasts We wrote customized software for installation of Linux server with RAID, free backup software, email alerts, online configuration backup, one click restore, etc. among other things. While we have been providing services to install Linux server which frankly, earlier took ages and each server manually needed to be installed selecting correct packages, all settings, additional software, etc. (sometimes took 2 days), this installer takes away all pain and does entire installation within 20 minutes without requiring any configuration. We are giving it out free. How do I get people to start using it? Download is available and we have uploaded installation videos. Even a hardware engineer with basic fundamentals of server, user, groups, folders, access control can install and use for free. Email alerts are also available for initial months for free. Guidance requested. We are zero at marketing finesse. Hi all. How does one install windows on a machine with linux? Where / how does one get a licenced copy that does not need it to phone M$ mother ship. I have installed M$ junk since 2000 nad havent used M$ sice 2003.
