On Slakware its environment variable $LS_OPTIONS, with 'ls' aliased to 'ls $LS_OPTIONS', which controls output of ls. I guess its similar in case of Redhat. So you might have to set the environment variable and alias. Amish. Philip S Tellis wrote: > How do I revert to asciibetical order?

Instead of the typical Windows "Start" button in the lower left-hand corner, they have a KDE "Gear" logo, as do almost all of the 400-plus monitors on Largo employees' desks. Receptionists, administrative assistants, and division fire chiefs here all use Linux instead of Windows, and most of them don't really notice one way or the other. But the elected officials who are responsible for Largo's IT budget certainly know about and notice Linux, because using Linux instead of Windows is saving the city a lot of money. One of the great anti-Linux screeds we hear is, "The secretaries will never be able to figure it out." permision granting for vfat & modem.

Hi Friends, Today I assign windows partition to my linux box. Now I can access win partitions from RHL 7.1 But while testing with different users I found that, I can write to the partition only if I login as root. If I login as other user I can't write on the partitions. I can only read. If I try to write on the partitions, the message appears as, permision denied. How can I give the permision to other users to write to windows partitions? The big bash is in Sunnyvale, just down the peninsula from the San Francisco LinuxWorld Expo, but there are also links to local parties around the globe (or if there are none near you, plan your own and add it to the list). telnet/ftp problem

I have installed RedHat Linux 7.1. I am not able to telnet to my machine from some other machine. While trying to telnet from some other machine to my machine, it gives me following error : Trying 202.141.151.92... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused Similarly when I try to ftp, it displays following error message : ftp: connect: Connection refused xinetd is running. From my local machine, it allows me to telnet/ftp to localhost. I have looked into /etc/sysconfig/network, /etc/xinetd.conf files and /etc/xinetd.d/ directory. All files seem OK to me. There is no firewall setting enabled. /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny have no entry. If someone wants to see these files then I can send the files. What may be the problem? - keyur.

sort order of ls

on RH 6.2, ls sorts asciibetically, but on 7.1 it sorts case insensitive alphabetically. How do I revert to asciibetical order? Philip -- System restarting, wait... VSNL stuff

The last time I checked they seemed to only scan the "MAIL FROM:" i.e., the envelope addys. :-) One can circumvent the VSNL filtering mechanism by using fake addys that look like anything@<vsnldomains> and use correct ones in the headers. But, the moment they start scanning the headers we will have to do direct delivery :-( Fart
