Kernel Compilation

Hi all, If any one is going to compile/recompile his/her kernel, plz let me know. As I've never compiled the kernel. I would like to watch the process before I compile my kernle. I'm equally reading How-to on kernel compilation but, still I would like to see it before I do. Well, kernel 2.4.8 is realeased now. Hi, This is just to tell you that http://dotfiles.com is a great source for all kinds of configuration files for a lot of Linux/ UNIX programs ranging from text editors (Vim, Emacs, jed, etc.) through window managers, X, etc. You're also encouraged to upload your own files to the site. Engg Colleges - 25th August

Hi, I study in PVPP COE Sion. It stays closed on Saturday. It is true that many other engg colleges are also closed on Saturday. I also second Philips suggestion that you should go to science colleges like Ruia, i know quite a few people in Ruia BSC Comp.Sci might be interested in Linux. Also i have a suggestion, if someone has a cdwriter that distributing Linux CDs at cost price would give a boost to the number of active Linuxers around here. I am busy on Saturdays so I cannot promise if I will come but i would appreciate if the various colleges being visited and the timings are announced on the list. I will try to make it. VSNL's mail and how to use sendmail to help

So VSNL has sent a clarification mail to all subscribers. The question now for us linux users is how to configure sendmail/postfix/exim/etc to set the MAIL FROM: as blah(a)vsnl.net while still keeping the From: as whatever we want? Editing the source is one option, but one I'd like to avoid as far as possible. Is there a configuration directive/pipe through procmail that can do it? If you don't want to go through this hassle though, the easiest way is to set a Reply-To: header. This may mess up with mailing lists though, like this one. sound card configration

Hi all, I tried isapnptools. But I still can't use my sound card in RHL 7.1 During the bootup (dmesg) the message appears like : Activating ISA DMA hang workarounds. isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards... isapnp: Card 'OPL3-SAx' isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total that means the sound card is detected by the RHL7.1 But still the sound test fails. I alsp try to execute pnpdump but, I didn't understand anything out of it. Also when I logout & halt the m/c. I get the message something like: saving mixer settings modprobe : Can't locate module sound - slot - 0 modprobe : Can't locate module sound - service - 0 - 0 aumix: error oopening mixer. How can I get rid of this & enjoy music form my linux box? Hi all, Some days back I have asked about md devices which were causing problems during halting my system under the title Halting problem. At that time Mr. Rajan Parekh suggested that, it is happening becoz the sys is trying to swithch off the m/c, which can be done if one uses ATX type of mainboard. So he suggested me to remove the "-p" switch from your "halt" command. The idea works out properly. But later I found that when I try to softboot the system with ctrl-alt-del. One last line appears below system halted line is, stopping all md devices, before the system reboots. Why is this line appears? Does the system really halts or it just hangs or goes into wait state instead of halting?
