Rotten VSNL.

I kick myself for voting them the best ISP in a survey some time back. Those rotten assholes have gone mad or something? We should all come together and sue them for wasting so many man hours to fix this idiosyncrasy. But the current situation is bad, so a few questions. 1. If we have our own smtp server running (eg. exim, qmail) then will the current restrictions of VSNL affect us? Or will it affect only those using VSNL smtp gateways? 2. how about a picnic!

Hi Guys, I am trying to mount my netware volume on my linux box and am getting some errors. My command is ncpmount -S server -A ip-of-server -V volume -f755 -d755 -U user /mnt/netware It asks for the password and after entering the password, i get the following error: NCP timeout NCP timeout NCP Server not responding NCP notice message: result=-11 ncp_read_super: failed connection, error=-11 ncpmount:Invalid argument is mount(2) The man page says that ipx should be compiled in the kernel. How do i know if it is compiled or not? I am using RHL6.2 Any suggestions would be appreciated. relocatable installs with rpm

rpm --relocate oldpath=newpath doesn't work as expected: rpm --relocate /usr=/usr/local ... gives: file /usrlocal from install of .... obviously, it's removed the / from /usr/local This seems to be a bug in rpm 4.0.2-8 that comes with rh7.1 Philip -- It's very inconvenient to be mortal -- you never know when everything may suddenly stop happening. sndconfig problem with i810 AC97 inbuilt sound

Hi I have installed RH7.0 on my pc with i810 motherboard, but i have a problem with the sound. when i run sndconfig i selected the i810 AC97 audio, but i cannot hear the sample sound which is being played to test the audio. Can anyone help. Thanks Dominic

Sound config

I've noticed that, on most any flavour of GNU/Linux [RedHat, Slackware, Debian, Mandrake, WinLinux], the loading of the sb module with the correct parameters for your sound card enables sounds perfectly. Of course, your sound card must be touted as "SoundBlaster Compatible", which most cards are, these days. At least, this worked for me in Redhat 6.2, Slackware 7.1, Potato, Mandrake 7.2 and WinLinux 2000. Does this also work on other flavours/versions? - Shrikant

Folks, People still interested? Well I will list some misc. info I came across. Might be totally redundant, but am doing my li'll bit. Beginner's Text: Common Lisp: A Gentle Introduction to Symbolic Computation -- David S. Touretzky. A excellent book for starting. A mite on the slow side but builds solid foundations. Can be found at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/LispBook/book.pdf Another book by David J Cooper gives a good introduction. A link can be found at www.franz.com Some Sites www.lisp.org www.franz.com I have tried GCL, CLISP and finally setteled on CMUCL. GCL, they say is not fully compliant with the latest CL standard. It is a compiler which translates Lisp to C and then uses GCC to compile a true native binary. Quite fast. But it seems it is not actively maintained or developed. CLISP is actively maintained or developed but it compiles to byte code which has to run on a VM. CMUCL compiles to native binary and is quite fast. I have also got ilisp (an emacs package) to work with Xemacs and CMUCL. It allows to run lisp in a emacs buffer and one can (supposedly) do incremental developement. (Xemacs because I do not subscribe to RMS philosophy ;)) BTW Philip, Emacs _does_not_ have a built in lisp interpreter. It has a built in elisp interpreter. elisp is a very small and restricted subset of CL. hope I am not being overly enthusiastic. quasi p.s. I have a problem : The Alt key is not defined as the Meta key in X. In Xemacs I have to use ESC as the meta key.
