Hi guys, My name is Ashish Kakar. I'm from Mumbai. I just joined this mailing group. I had tried searching for a Linux User Group in Mumbai earlier but without much success. Today I got some free time at work so I decided to try again et voila! I have been using Linux for a couple of years now (5-6) but I cant say I'm an expert yet. I have tried Mandriva, Ubuntu, Slax (briefly), Fedora, CentOS in that order and currently I don't have any OS (not even Windows) on my laptop. I'm curious about a few distros like Gentoo and Arch. Anyways, do we have any meetups? I would love to be there. Ashish

Hi guys, Been unwell for the past few days so couldn't reply earlier. Also, I sent 2 messages in the"top-posting" format. Apologies for that. I'm using hotmail and it automatically posts messages in that format. Henceforth, I will make sure that the replies are in the quoted format (will have to figure out how to do it in hotmail). Which mailing agent do you generally use? But I have to say our landing page http://www.glug-bom.org/ is super-efficient. You can't get more efficient than that. I also checked out the landing page of Pune Linux User Group http://www.plug.org.in/. It's quite simple and efficient as well. I wanted to attend the meetup tomorrow but my boss has called me to work and I hate to disappoint my boss. Saturdays is usually working for me so attending the meetups will be difficult but I'll be there when my boss lets me off. Again sorry for the mess up. Ashish.

PIL for Open Source in Education - Update

Hi, In last month's proceedings, Hon High Court passed an important order to make appropriate changes in School/College curriculum for academic year 2017-18 ( in view of Notification dated 17 June 2014 which advises states to adopt open source on priority) Government has formed an experts committee for this implementation. The report is expected before 8 March 17. So next date is kept on 31 March 2017. Another good news is that Prof Kannan of 'Spoken Tutorials' seems to be one of the members in the committee. Prof Kannan, being a strong supporter of open source, has been putting great efforts to promote open source. He himself says that obsolete curriculum is the biggest problem in ICT education. Also he has signed our on line petition for Mandating Open Source. His work will be meaningful if open source is effectively implemented through curriculum. Now we can definitely expect a report from the committee suggesting mandatory adoption of Open Source in Education in strong and clear words. Best wishes to Prof Kannan and his team. Earlier, Mr Krishnakant Mane and DFF filed a similar PIL in order to have a greater impact of the original petition. The two petitions will now be joined (Probably on 31 March). Original petition is representing students and teachers while Krishnakant is representing Visually impaired students and students in rural areas in particular. Lots of thanks to Krishnakant. Open source C++ programs

I am looking for some programs for performing empirical measurements of a new method of static analysis for resolving virtual function calls. My rough requirements are: * The programs should be publicly available (the credibility measurements on programs that they cannot see. * The programs should be real applications, preferably not very large (say upto 20KLoC). * They should have a liberal use of virtual functions. * They should be compilable by gcc/g++. * They should have dependencies on special libraries or other programs. The build progress should be simple. Ideally, the usual sequence of `./configure' followed by 'make' should do the trick. * They should be reasonably clean programs. Some C++ features are compiled in an obscure manner by gcc/g++ and we seem to be spending much more time in fighting the IRs produced by these obscure compilations than in the actual problems at hand. Spec benchmarks have troubled us a lot on this front. We are looking at the programs on sourceforge and github but there are no easy ways of identifying such programs. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. hi, i had been working with the high resolution of the console as delivered with ubuntu server distribution, hated it, but had to make do since i couldn't find material which could show me a way to switch off the 'vga' mode. last night, i migrated away from ubuntu, it's too big for my tastes. on debian jessie, and this too has that same high resolution console. i have tinkered around with the console-setup and grub files which only afforded me a regular console on grub, but after grub transfers command to the operating system, i am still stuck with a high resolution console. is there any solution for this problem? and ah, yes, i still work at the console, no x11 for me. thanks, ~mayuresh
