what does 1 min of VoIP usage translate into in terms of data transfer? I am trying to work out the total cost of a VoIP service. Got the call rates but one component is the bandwidth usage. Since it works well with 256kbps and above, and both VSNL and MTNL do not have unlimited plans for 256 kb/s and above therefore the question. Ignorance is Strength. Picked up the Dlink dsl modem from MTNL after infinite number of calls to all an sundry at gandhinagar and vikhroli (w) exchanges. According to an engineer Mr. Nullamuttu they have a problem with supplies and configuration of modem. Connected to an old box powered it up, changed a couple of passwords and it was up and running. Ran the broadband test program which failed to complete. downloaded some stuff speed is around 200kbps. I must move the phone line away from the UPS to add a few kbps. So far so good. rgds jtd

Dear All, We have 30 branch offices situated in the radius of 150kms. we plan to connect to all the branches (have 2 pcs) for file transfer. what will be best option for connection all the branches to our Head office. You can actually disable the net connection, by removing the route.. this works on windows and linux in windows... removing the route will close the connection to the modem and you can disable the pppoe connection from the modem when not in use in linux.. ifdown the eth interface and disable the pppoe connection from the modem when not in use Satish

Use a proper vpn like freeswan. Ofcourse on a dialup internet connection u can have better speed with a bicycle. BTW what exactly are u trying to achiev. Alternately u can have a ras with multiple input lines and have your branches dial in. Will give u speeds of 9600 bps. Ok for trivial work. The minimal setup u require is 64kbps isdn lines. rgds jtd

Dear All, I am running Red Hat Fedora Core 4. We have a pop server in which aliases is enabled, Using fetchmail we download mails from single real account say "general" and distribute to users locally. I use Postfix as my MTA with default config. My fetchmail config below poll xyz.com proto pop3 localdomains test.linux.com no dns envelope "Delivered-To" user "general" password "xxx" is * here it works fine, but when I mark copy to other users, they get multiple copies of mail. It must be kept in mind that it is very unfair (to put it mildly) to expect free (as in beer, if not speech) software to come with a warranty. One cannot expect a certificate of quality and terms of warranty for software developed by volunteers. However, when I buy some software (let's not get technical on whether I buy the software or a licence), it is quite reasonable to expect that the software developers give some sort of quality assurance (warranty or otherwise). Hey .. i have used debian on my amd64 laptop.. everything works just fine. didnt see any problems. i just get a problem that is i cant get it to show how much battery is left. other then works great. and if you are lookin to download the amd64 os .. you can download the dvd .. i can burn and give the dvd to you. bye regards Yasar

64 bit linux with max device compatibility

Hi, MTNL Triband is on and I am on the lookout for downloading a 64 bit OS. I need something that would help me get started without hassling me with inane device issues. (FC4 fails in trying to 'line discipline' my serial mouse and doesn't see my ASUS onboard lan card and Debian went modprobe -v ide-detect failed in installation) Back to 64-bit So I tried Knoppix, which seems to have only Live versions. Next on my favourites list was Suse, here 64 bit is only available as a DVD image. (Sadly no DVD writer... yet :) So in short my query/plea here is pls help me find a 64-bit Linux distro that will know how to work with all my peripherals (keyboard + mouse) and help me see 64 bit computing at work. The smaller the download the better, I won't use this for anything other than a File/Web server and to continue my exp with Ruby. Need a Gnome GUI though.. not that confident at Linux yet. Need a ip based SMB scanner

Hi, I would like info on a windows share scanner (something similiar to Xsharez or Legion on windows). Currently am using Smb4k, also tried a host of utilities like komba smbspider e.t.c but none of them help me list - machines with shares. For Ex. Smb4k is good but lists all machines in the network. I have to click on each to check if they have shares. In legion i just supply a range of ip's, say 10.12.88.2-254 and i get list of shares available on my LAN. Hi Luggers, FOSS.IN/2005 is an annual conference for the Indian FOSS community. Historically, FOSS.IN/2005 evolved out of the Linux-Bangalore conference series that ran between 2001 to 2004. This year, the scope of the conference is widened to cover free and open source in general, rather than limiting the focus to Linux alone. The four day conference intends to bring together the entire cross section of players in the FOSS scenario - users from different target communities, technologists, developers, educationists, businesses as well as policy makers. The theme for this year's conference is "Conversations". On the FOSS horizon, there are several efforts that are represented or addressed across the country. In, parallel, there are various technical discussions and dialogues that have happened at the earlier conferences and meetings and are expected to happen at this conference too. At FOSS.IN/2005, the focus would be to catalyze mutually beneficial interaction between the technologists and technology implementers (FOSS developers) and the end users, policy makers, educationists and industry. Mind you, afaiu, it doesn't matter where you got your copy of RHEL or SLES from. It is quite legal to download both of them from, say, bittorrent or something, because both are still GPL'd. Only, if you don't buy your copy from Red Hat or SuSE, you won't get any updates. Though like I said before, even if you didn't buy it, you can still register and get the updates. Updates are not free. Now, as for my signature, that is the result of registering at http://counter.li.org. I actually use this signature outside such Linux related mailing lists. Spare computer without HDD

Hi I have a spare PC without HDD. It has a Celeron 500 64 mb ram 1810chipset and a ASUS 52X Cdrom drive.Does not support CD booting I also have a fully functional PC Pentium 2.4ghz, 256mb RAM, CDRand DVD combo drive, 845GVSR chipset, 2 40g HDD's used for daily needs What use can this diskless PC be put to in combination to the new one. Problem while compiling openldap

Good morning everyone. i am facing a small problem while installing openldap-2.0.17 through a tar ball on RHEL 3 and 4 while running make it gives me the following errors. [OT] MTNL Triband

Hi list, I heard some of my friends talking that MTNL might be introducing completely unlimited packages (no download/upload limits) for their Triband connections. They may cost between 900 bucks to 1000. Any inside info on this? I am really tired of these cable ISPs (yes, reliance powersurfer too. they have been having tremendous down time in my area). According to my friends they were supposed to introduce this offer(s) 2nd October or so but they pushed it back until the 10th or so. I am highly skeptical of what I was told by my friends. But nevertheless being a human afterall I have hopes from MTNL. Atlast we may have a REAL broadband connection and no hassles of bills since they will be charging a flat fee - no matter what the usage :) Hopefully yours, -- Dinesh A. Joshi

Hello, I choose FC4's full installation option and removed localization and internalization stuff.But FC4 is not installing all the packages. For example anaconda is not instilling Swat. Is it bug with FC4? Thank you Regards, Komal

But if a system is unjust then it should not be supported, and an unwillingness to strip undeserved privileges from a group, however noble their cause, is not sufficient reason to maintain the current dispensation." Actually he is complaining against closed source / proprietory software. He said that some people raise the matter of open-source to stop moving to software liability. And his argument is valid. Even open source has to be ready to take responsility for the code they right. I remember being told how debian tests every package thoroughly before putting it in stable version.
