Hello, I have one question about RHCE exam. RHEL comes with Postfix and Sendmail MTA. I am comfortable with Postfix and I would not like to waste my energy with Sendmail. In exam can I choose Postfix over Sendmail or I have to concentrate on both Postfix and Sendmail? Is there any RHCE forum out there? Anybody with RHEL 4.0 NOT RHEL 3.0 books on 033,133 and 253 please contact me off list I want to buy that books. Thank you Regards, Komal

bash 'cd' problem

hi, i have following lines in bash. #!/bin/bash mount -t vfat /some/usb_devfs/device /mnt/usb cd /mnt/usb But somehow the 'cd' command behaves very strangely. if after cd /mnt/usb i put 'pwd' it shows '/mnt/usb' but, instead of 'pwd' if i put 'ls' it shows the listing of dir from which the script is executed. very strange. -- Life is complex. I installed an additional fan on the system and got a 400W SMPS...just in case. The system was pretty stable, and gave no overheating issues for me. However, the motherboard recently went bad, but that, I think was more due to the lack of earthing in my place rather than has to do with motherboard... Hi there, This is Vihang a rookie linuxer... I believe that the real potential of linux system lies in its networking capability but somehow my home machine is not connecting to LAN i am using Red Hat 8.0 and my configuration is celeron 2 GHz, 128 mb ram , and a graphics card. i have installed the graphics card. A brief description about the problem is when i go to network configuration wizard my network card is detected properly which is Realtech (some number). Then in the next step i manually put my Static IP address given by my net connection provider i enter subnet mask and all the detail. After the wizard finishes i try accessing any website and it says website not found. i try pinging the some ip and it says network not reachable. Everythign is working fine on my Windows XP site. The interface eth0 is detected properly during the booting of the system. Not sure from where to start the troubleshooting. I tried searching on the net but no relevent information Any help would greatly be appreciated. Sify and Router Configuration

Hi, I know this really isint linux related, but couldnt think of a better place to ask. I have a netgrear wireless router which I want to configure to access sify. These are the steps I have taken: 1) Useing static ip address on router configuration page. 2) I have set the mac address on the router to correspond with the one they have bound to my account. Now the problem is that I still need to use the sify client to send my username and password. The client also automatically sends my MAC address. So depending on the connection I use( wireless or wired) a different MAC address is sent. Also currently its impossible for two computers to use the internet at the same time. What I need to figure out is a way for the Netgear router to send all this information to sify. India Now Host to Internet Root Server

[OT] Motherboard Repair

Hello All, I have a query related to my repair of a Mercury 810e mobo. It was my first serious attempt to repair a mobo after an earlier successfull case of a P4 mobo with swoolen caps. _System:_ P3 1.13 GHz., Mercury 810e mobo with on board sound and video. _Problem:_ The system would stop suddenly while working and the display would become blank with the monitor going into standby. It could be turned on again only by power off/on. Again the display would disappear after some minutes and the system would require restart again. Many a times the system would never start at all. A pci display card was tried out but after initial bootup, it became off again and never started. _Diagnosis:_ SMPS unit was swapped and found OK. RAM ok. On the mobo, there is a step down circuit that converts 5V input to 1.5V output for the bus gate circuitry. This 1.5V was missing whenever the mobo would not start. On some occasions, luckily the mobo would start and since I had no HDD with me, I used a live linux CD as the OS. Knoppix does not go beyond console so 'Cool Linux', a Russian/English distro was used. It gave a window display for a few minutes but then the system went off again. The 1.5V fires up on power on but after a few seconds to some or more minutes it shuts off. _Solutions Tried:_ The dc-dc converter chip 34063 replaced but no effect. The power caps were resoldered and the system came alive for a few minutes, then off. The vga connector pins were resoldered and the system ran for more than half an hour but went off. However now even cool linux does not go beyond console. When the problems start, the system does not start again till quite some time and a lot of fiddling. The cpu is cool. Any help from anyone experienced in this is most welcome. If someone can explain the concept behind power signals, thats welcome too. tcp throput v/s udp throput

Morning Fellas, Was working on some socket progs based on some performance test objectives we had in mind. The objective is to stress the TCPIP stack in the GnuLinux kernel and see the best numbers achiveable over the network. Am in a bit of a quandry here. We always were taught that the overheads of a tcp session were higher than that of UDP considering the ACK's and FIN's sent across for every packet over the n/w, while TCP guaranteed delivery....blah..blah and UDP didn't. Should i expect better throughput(Bytes/s) for TCP or UDP over a *Reliable* LAN and *Unreliable* WAN?. I will let you know what results i have achieved but i would like to know your perspective since thats more important. The tests are on my RHEL 3.0 box with the RH hacked 2.4.x kernel. I will post the connect/send/recv code to those interested. The throughput calculation code is same for both the TCP and UDP programs hence the calculations i am sure about. What do you think about it gurus???. Has anybody tried out SCTP???. Remote Installation

hi, as i go on using emacs for coding, i go on exploring more and more about emacs features, but it also lots of pressure of remembering lots of keyboard sequences (atleast in intial phase). i was wondering, which method is prefered? how about, instead of doing C-<space>, i start using M-x set-mark (this is valid for all the commands)? but it invites hitting lots of keystrokes :( (i know the tab works). also this M-x method, what exactly its called? i mean i though of googling it for the nice tutorial, but what should i put as a search string? Hi , Help needed regarding Xferring data from mobiles to Linux box using IR or Bluetooth I have Nokia 6600, I myself am struggling for Xferring data onto linux box, But i am struggling for Xfer over InfraRed ( IR ), Not yet lucky ......... Hello All, I did some calculation on the r-connect schemes for internet. The Rs. 650 per month has unlimitted time and a data limit of 1 GB. While this looks attractive, it can be expensive for downloading CD isos. @ 14.5 Kbytes per second, 1 GB takes 68965.5 seconds to download. This means 1149.4 minutes. @ the standard daytime rate of 50 ps per minute, this becomes Rs. 574.7. @ 25 ps for usage after 10 pm, 1 GB would cost Rs. 287.3 to download and 2 GB would be Rs. 587/-. The minimum tarrif without CID for a fwp is Rs. 150/- only. Only disadvantage in standard tarrifs is that you don't get an smtp service. I was merely giving you a data point since you solicited feedback re: their service. The throughput is consistent around 226 Kbps. Debian sarge. Thanks, this gives me a data point. I have static IP and just logged in to modem (FF 1.0.6 SuSE 9.3). Same problem, some of the graphics of the pages do not load :( Time to follow up with the DLink guys. If they had to do something under any prop toolchain they would be debugging for the next 100 yrs. Quake 3 runs only in 640x480 mode

Hi there. I compiled the released Q3 Arena source (thank you, thank you Mr. John Carmack!) a couple of hours ago. However, I soon found out that somehow it ran well only if I fired up X in a resolution of 640x480. It just wouldn't get up to speed if I booted into the default resolution of 1024x768 (even though q3 itself ran in 640x480 mode). Is there a way I can start X in 640x480 mode without changing the global /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? My current routine constitutes changing that file, restarting X, playing Quake, and then changing the file back ... -- Sandy (http://360.yahoo.com/sandesh247) Better hope the life-inspector doesn't come around while you have your life in such a mess.

I am not sure, it may be proxy or gateway. but there has to be some server where their windows client connects to and passes username and password. I want to know where their windows client connects. I have both SIP client and H323 client with me. VSNL not just offers you dialup internet account but also net telephony. I have about 56 hrs of internet left which is equal to about 450Rs. And if I activate net telephony I can use those 450Rs to make calls as well. As I have cable net now I hardly use dialup account so I just wanted to use this account to make calls instead of buying separate cards. Thanks again. Amish.

You could look for something known as Arctic Silver 5. But for overheating, you may want to look at the fan speeds of the processor as well and make sure its running at the correct speed. Try cleaning the fan. Arctic Silver 5, is very well known. I am not sure if you will get it here. But you do get other heat sink pastes.I had bought a small can/bottle of silica gel/heat sink paste compound a long time ago. Dont remember where. Satish

CLI based Internet

I have Knoppix 3.3 live linux with internal modem from d-link. I want to configure CLI Internet but it didn't successed. It detects my modem as a Rockwell but it is actually Conexant. Once u configure the modem and ask it to update the settings, u need to rerun your dhclient unless u have configured the modem to dispense a static ip to your box.With dynamic ip i experienced something similiar. Since i had planned to use static ip anyway, i did not check further, and i cant see the link between the problem and dhcp. Maybe it's the routes. I am clueless about IEeek tho. rgds jtd

Hello All, Has anyone used Tata Indicom Softphone on Linux? Does it use SIP or H323? What should be server settings etc.? I am trying to use dialup account with net telephony activated. I tried their windows based software using wine but it didnt run. There is no response yet from customer support. Thanks in advance. Amish.
