Afternoon Fellas, Am planning on booting me Via-ITX from 64MB of flash with the OS in ReadOnly mode. The HDD for storing the MP3's will be in RO mode too. Getting a stripped down version of Gnu-Linux to run on the flash will be the easiest part. The issues which i am still trying to work out are about integration of a JukeBox with the Remote Controller and LCD Display. Am pretty blank about intgrating the LCD and Remote Controllers with Gnu-Linux via Serial/Paralell ports and providing hooks to the onboard JukeBox application. Do point me to some docs/pdfs/sites i can read up on this please. Root partition doesn't unmount on poweroff

Hi everyone, I'm running Ubuntu 5.04 on my machine. When I poweroff the machine from a terminal or by pressing the "power" button, the root partition doesn't unmount cleanly and it checks the drive for errors on restarting. This *dosen't* happen when I poweroff from GDM or from Xfce. Can anyone help me with this? I use the commands like "sleep <time> && poweroff" very often, so it gets annoying when fsck runs on startup. (the filesystem is ext2). Also, /home is another (ext2) partition, but there are no problems unmounting /home. Thanks, -Akshay

I see Debian Gnome. The mistake I made was that I did not scan Disk1 -partly coz of the prompt (insert any Debian disks..e.g. 2 of a set of 2 disks) after I scanned that disk, things went smooth. I went manual and installed x-window-system and gnome. Had a little trouble with X. The auto-config took /dev/input/mice which crashed X. I edited X configuration (all coz of my Lin Bible) that to /dev/psaux and Gnome is up!. Now to rain on my own parade. No sound .. /dev/dsp no such device. I had Suse 9.1 with sound so my h/w is up to it. (Intel865GBF onboard sound) The Gnome login screen now has no shut down option. earlier I installed the desktop from tasksel and that had the option. Now I just come to the login screen and push the power button Ok? Any key-comb to shutdown. I setup fstab to read my NTFS partitions. trouble is non-root users can't get in. Fat partitions have the same setting ro,user,noauto and they work. What's with this ? Nautilus keeps crashing - unstable Debian set?? I lost my desktop icons and right click on the desktop. That apart Debian-gnome is super-fast and a treat to work on. I got ruby and freeRIDE running in no time. Thanks a million, jtd Gishu

This is a very important thing which I am focusing on. Please feel free to add anything else you have noticed. Then perhaps we could send a letter to TOI or something Have you ever realized how TOI seems to favour Windows a lot. I am not just talking about ignoring Linux. Anything which is not Windows gets a small box while even the slightest news about Windows gets half a page. To qoute a recent example: In the Aug. 5, 2005 issue of Times International they have half a page for Windows Vista, and Another half a page in Mumbai Mirror. They say how it has coll new graphics with transparent titlebars. Hasn't KDE and X had it from atleast 6 months ago. When there is anything about IE like tabs in IE7 they had an article, but I have never seen any article about Netscape, Opera, Mozilla or Firefox. They never tell you that if you switched from Windows to another OS you could totally escape from viruses without having temporary updates. HCL released their Rs 9990 PC having FC3 or FC4. But all they mentioned was that it had a 'Linux-based OS'. No mention about why it is good, its features and better security? Isn't the press supposed to be impartial. Lots of other newspapers provide technology news not concerning Microsoft. Well I have expressed my views. Please note that this is just my opinion and I am not voicing everyone. Nikhil

Linux compatible motherboard...

Hey people, My friend wants to buy a Linux friendly motherboard. The dealer is giving him the following options: 1. MSI RS480M2 for AMD64 2800+ 2. Intel 845GVSR for P4 2.4Gig 3. Intel 915GAV(i think, not sure) for a P4 2.66Gig His requirements: 1. Basic development PC, nothing much 2. Must be able to run Madrake(Mandriva) 10.1 Official 3. Alternatively he should be able to run SuSE 9.1 PE which is quite old and hence I question the availability of drivers for recent hardware. 4. He is a newbie so everything must work out of the box. Don't expect him to compile drivers and stuff...forget a kernel recompile. Please give your opinions and suggest a better, more compatible motherboards. The sify client simply does not work reliably. Connects sometimes and not at all at other times. I got the Debian Sarge CDs from gautam borad, who posted on this list sometime back. Next time dude, pls post that the 7 CDs are "unstable" version r0A. Would have helped me ? ok so I got it installed at the cost of my Suse 9.1 working install. Base install AOK. The sources.list file has cdrom entries for disks 2-7 of the set (Just looked up a book.. i think this is a list of places to look for packages. However if I try to install gnome for instance apt-get install gnome I get a slew of dependencies, which "will not be installed" or something to that effect. How do I plead with apt-get to find and install the req dependencies ? Pls keep in mind that the machine does not have a 4 lane broadband conn. so online updates would be a prob. Can I get a Desktop from somewhere within the 7 CDs stuck at the Debian command prompt again (spider sense tingling - jtd are u replying before I post this?), Gishu Pillai
