Dear Vaibhav, As far I know, For example if U add this in /etc/resolv.conf search redhat.com it would mean that when U want to place a query like ping mail.redhat.com due to the addition of the search keyword in resov.conf U could just type ping mail it would automatically ping mail.redhat.com Due to the ' search ' keyword it appends queried hostname to the domain mentioned next to search to every query U make Correct me If I am wrong ... Hi All, This sure is a too fundamental a question, and I could not get an understandable answer, hence I am seeking help here. What is the meaning of "search foo.com" & "domain foo.com" in resolv.conf resolv.conf contains a list of NS <as provided by ISPs> which will do domain to IP lookup... so then what will searched on foo.com ?? Diff. betwee search foo.com & domains foo.com Trying to set my fundas correct... No flames pls. Thank you. Vai

[OT] MTNL TriBand DSL service

Every now and then the MTNL DSL service goes south - cannot browse the web, DNS look up fails etc. - basically no IP traffic goes out of the DSL router. To recover, I have to power cycle the DLink modem 502T. I understand that some of you with the service, may be experiencing the similar problems. What kind of symptoms do you experience? What action on your part recovers the link? Pls. let me know. Send your info off this list (mailto:arunkha@gmail.com). I recently spoke to a sales rep of a linux based accounting app but saw it too was too binding. Maybe it's not their fault, maybe i never clearly expressed by specs. I am looking for a platform independent accounting application, built around open source components. The linux based accounting App was not only NOT OS but also tied to a particular platform. No can do. theoretically i should be able to run it on Windows, FreeBSD, Xandros, RH9, FC3 (both client and server) So... Maybe a webbased accounting app with a mysql/postgreSQL backend seems to be the only solution for now. and it should be openSource ofcourse. It's a bummer that a web based app would mean doing away with the function keys. (true? false?) a) It seems that K.G. has a comprehensive open source accounting package out there, which could do with some testing, development and other help from the domain experts as well as technical folks. I am sure some of our CA linuxers can join in? as well as some technical folks? If there are others too developing their own open source apps and would like to pool in resources, maybe we should get together and see how history can be made? any takers? How to get the creation date of a file

Hello All Is there any way to retrieve the creation date of a file? The "ls -l" command shows date, but once the file is modified, the date shown is the modification date. Is there anyway I can controll that applciation using the local keyboard and mouse. I'm particularly interested in knowing if any XF86config tweaks can be done in this regard. Hi I am going to retain the old pc (IBM branded PC celeron 500 64mb RAM) The new non intel PC will be used as a desktop PC and will be networked to the old pc through a crossover cable. Although I would like a MAC but it is ruled out. I have decided on AMD. which processor and motherboard will be the best combo. Any further suggestions are also welcome Thanks Ninad

The iMac range is not terribly overpriced, but in any case it is no longer the most cost-effective option for Abhishek. That is the Mac Mini, which is a small box containing motherboard and HDD with DVD combo RW drive and a host of connectors for monitor, keyboard, mouse and network peripherals (standard IBM PC type peripherals work, so you can use your existing monitor, keyboard and mouse). It starts at under $500 (please check the Apple Store at www.apple.com for official India prices) and I am told there are already deals at other sites for better prices - check your local hardware market. You need to add Bluetooth or WiFi cards, which are extra. Doc Nagarjuna uses Gnome on his G4 laptop and so do a host of other users here in India, many on this list, who have remained silent for some unfathomable reason. Hi I have 2 pcs.I will call them as follows New PC(N) and old PC (O) N is a brand new pc with P4.2.4ghz,256mbRAM,40G HDD,D845GVSR mother board etc. It is triple booting with XP and FC3 and Ubuntu warty O is a old IBM pc PII 500mhz,64mb ram and CD rom drive. I have reserved this Pc to load only open source .It is running only Ubuntu warty I have connected these 2 with a crossover cable. However I have only one monitor/keyboard and mouse. Is there a way by which I can access the desktop of O and issue commands from N with the help of software.i.e I log in to FC3 on N and access the Ubuntu desktop of O and say issue commands run applications on O I have heard of some tools but do not know whether they will work or are suitable for my purpose.for e.g. Xserver,VNC,nfs I do not want to buy any special hardware Thanks and regards Ninad

I am left with an old PC which is a Celeron 500 with 64mb RAM IBM branded PC. I need to buy a new PC and decided to buy a non intel PC.
