Adding Debian DVD to repository of Ubuntu

I want to add the Debian DVD to Ubuntu's repository. To that end, I've copied the proper entry from Debian's sources.list to Ubuntu's sources.list. However I need to add some files to Ubuntu's /var/lib/apt/lists. They are the Debian counter parts of the following files :- Ubuntu%204.10%20%5fWarty%20Warthog%5f%20-%20Preview%20i386%20Binary-1% 20(20041020)_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Packages Ubuntu%204.10%20%5fWarty%20Warthog%5f%20-%20Preview%20i386%20Binary-1% 20(20041020)_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Release Ubuntu%204.10%20%5fWarty%20Warthog%5f%20-%20Preview%20i386%20Binary-1% 20(20041020)_dists_unstable_restricted_binary-i386_Packages Ubuntu%204.10%20%5fWarty%20Warthog%5f%20-%20Preview%20i386%20Binary-1% 20(20041020)_dists_unstable_restricted_binary-i386_Release I've found them but they are named simply Packages and Release in the main and contrib folders on the DVD. How do I get the details to be filled into the new filenames like the files above? And I probably need to edit /var/lib/apt/cdroms.list file too. I asked a Senior VP at Reliance 2 days ago if reliance had bought tally (since they came out with that phone deal a few months or a year ago) and he replied in the negative. Now Reliance is a big company so it's probable that one dept doesnt know what another is doing and I may be wrong. If anyone from Tally is here on this group, or working in the office across Tally, or a neighbor or girlfriend/boyfriend/muse/"Good friend" of some Tally tech lead is reading this and can grab hold of one of their ever elusive support team members, can you please ask them to come out clearly and say what works and what not with Tally. Saying tally works on linux is not enough apparently. More information would be highly appreciated. System requirements, OS requirements, Arm n Leg requirements. [OT] HDD Cable Problems.

Dear Friends, I have experience quite a good number of startup/boot problems in computers (M$) of either HDD not being detected during boot or getting detected after a few *minutes* or the comp giving registry errors. The problem in all these cases was the new thin fine wire HDD cable that comes with the motherboards. On replacing this cable with the older normal cable, everything is just fine. What's wrong with these new cables and any other experiences like these? Regards, Rony.

I have tried several times to reload the GRUB loader, using RH9 disks and also Ubuntu (the latter does not have any way to install GRUB without committing to partitioning), but despite apparent success during the process, it always returns the same error. Query: should I try Lilo? I must have the ability to boot to either OS. -- Vickram

I have been seeing that off and on this list keeps talking about Tally and how to run this on GNU/Linux? Tally is not a free software, and I dont see why users should discuss this on this list. On the other hand availability of accounting packages is a big problem and several hackers are addressing this issue, including some of our own list members. We should discuss those issues. This list is not for discussing propreitary software, but free software. In fact we should be discussing the issue of how to boycott the distributions that ship propreitary software and have explicit tieups with such agencies. This clearly shows that these distribution companies do not have any interest other than being in business. BTW, those of you who have some knowledge of this application, can you do some research about how the data is stored in Tally? Is this encoding a standard? Does this application support Export of data to any other standards? What freedom users have? Are the users locked in? etc. Nagarjuna

Data Recovery on Reser FS Filesystem

Hi all , I need help and suggestions from you experts and Gurus . While reinstalling SuSE 9.2 it hv overwritten on my previous SuSE 9.2 Linux Partition . I did not find any Reser FS Data Recovery tools . I want to know is thee any way to recover data from that partition ? Is there any software which may help me ? Is there any professional solution provider in Pune ? I repeat my problem in detail . I allready had installed SuSE 9.2 on /dev/hda2 . And I had free ( empty ) partition on /dev/hda3 . But SuSe 9.2 select by default /dev/hda2 as root partition for installation . In hurry I did not notice that . After first boot I notice that I had lost my partition . Because of this my /dev/hda2 partition got formated . Now I had lost lots of important data . But I hope that I have not overwritten entire partition . i.e As there was 7Gb of usefull data on /dev/hda2 . And I only installed or overwritten 800Mb of data on that partition while installation . So I hope that my /home/amit directory may get recover . Please help me . You can think of Projects and 300-400Mb of Mails means lots of Important Data . Amit.

Installing Xandros 3.0 on Celeron 1.7, Intel 845 board

Installed the Xandros 3.0 on a KDS Valiant P3 600 Mhz and it worked like a charm. Only had to mount the usb filesystem manually once and the 6 in 1 card reader became plug n play. Problem is when installing the same OS on a desktop Cel 1.7, 256 MB, Intel 845 Board, After the initial CD reading it reaches the "detecting hardware" stage at which point the machine shuts down it seems as i get the "Sync out of range" message on the monitor. Then machine needs to be restarted. Any clues why this should happen? unplugged all external devices just in case that was creating a problem, but to no avail. guys, i spoke on chat on the tally site. they are like ayega ayega.. nothing confirm as yet......... I even tried running tally 7.2 with wine.. loads of problems.. i wasnt even able to run 6.3 with wine. though i have sucessfully running 5.2 with wine. If any of you get any information on on 7.2 on linux. please put in a mail to the archive. the only solution tht i was able to c was as someone here suggested, run tally on win3k and run remote clients connecting to win3k. .. To All in the mailing list and the moderator in particular, Don't you think that the format of this mailing list is too complicated. All the posts are sent in batch within a mail from the moderator. This way it is too difficult to find a particular post, in which, there may be a solution to the problem queried. If every individual mail is sent as it is after being screened, it will be much easier. I know it is required to be screened, but there are other mailing lists that do it the way I am referring. Like for example the BEOWULF mailing list. The users send their mail to the main account and the main account sends it to all in the mailing list after it is screened. This just simplifies the task of finding a particular post rather than trying to find it among a heap of batch mails. This is just a personal suggestion and there is no obligation on the moderators part to accept it. Thank you, RC

No the problem doesnt seem to be with the apps works on conslole all the services are working properly jst that Mozilla is not opening it starts the process but then jst goes conkey .. works fine in windows partition .dont use X windows doesnt work in gui ( tty7) too.. How do we do a query for collecting the exact version of a particular rpm or package installed. I sometimes run into trouble trying to load an rpm which may be older than the one I have. I want to write a script which will get the version number of the rpm installed so that we know if the current rpm is newer or not. RC

Firefox users deprived of certain sites.

Happened to come across a couple of sites recently which would not be very friendly to Firefox. a)The sites being the Air Sahara/Indiatimes auctions site. b) www.visa-services.com c) Indiapost.org (The pincode locator feature dies on detecting non IE) Now, without taking the effort to get to a windows machine, are my chances of viewing those sites next to nil? Side Question: Has anyone run the Galileo software (travel bookings) on linux? Details about the sites not opened in Firefox. The Indiatimes auctions site gives this message at some point after going through 2 steps. "Error ! The current browser is either too old or too modern (usind DOM document structure)." The www.visa-services.com site gives the message "this site is best viewed with IE so n so and above and 800x600 res. And nothing can be done. cant click ahead. The Indiapost.org site (http://www.indiapost.org/Netscape/pinsearch1.asp) returns Page not found error message from IIS and the url in the address bar changes to "http://www.indiapost.org/Netscape/pinsearch2.asp" So looks like they have a specific error message for netscape based browsers. So if I were to succeed in making my office windows free eventually, how would I be able to access the sites above and many such? views comments feedback, appreciated as always. Cannot login through kdm in Debian

I can't login through KDM - the login screen re-appears. GDM works fine. I can use KDE from GDM. I can also jump to console from the KDM login window and login from there - its only KDM thats the problem. Any idea as to what config detail I missed? -- Rohit V. U will also require to maintain the packages in the right order if you wanna use a cd install. So you will have to get the packages.gz file for each cd and copy only those packages from the dvd to a partition, then use dpkg - scan package to create the new packages.gz file, then burn the lot to cd. Quite a pain. I dont know of a simple method. Of course a perl or bash script could automate the whole process. But i find dvd to be better by far. rgds jtd

Dear all, I am using Philips chip based PCITV-card(Mercury make) using "saa7134" module (which is compiled in kernel). By default the module loads with card=0(generic/unknown) option which doesn't work. When I reload the module manually using modprobe with option card=3, my card works fine using xawtv. My question is howto pass card=3 option to "saa7134" during start-up. I find no entries for "saa7134" in any of /etc/modules, /etc/modprobe.d/*,etc/rc*.d My system configuration is as follows- AMD Athlon XP 1800+/128MB/80GB Debian-Sarge KDE3.3 Can anyone help me? Gragon BSD 1.2.0 Released

1.2.0 is our second major DragonFly release and the first one which we have created a separate CVS branch for. DragonFly's policy is to only commit bug fixes to release branches. This release represents a significant milestone in our efforts to improve the kernel infrastructure. DragonFly is still running under the Big Giant Lock, but this will probably be the last release where that is the case. This will be last release that uses GCC 2.95.x as the default compiler. Both GCC 3.4.x and GCC 2.95.x are supported in this release through the use of the CCVER environment variable ('gcc2' or 'gcc34'). GCC 2.95.x is to be retired soon due to its lack of TLS support. The current development branch will soon start depending heavily on TLS support and __thread both within the kernel and in libc and other libraries. This release fully supports TLS segments for programs compiled with gcc-3.4.x. It goes without saying that this release is far more stable then our 1.0A release. A huge number of bug fixes, performance improvements, and design changes have been made since the 1.0A release. TCP SACK in, tested, and on by default. TCP Performance tuning (header prediction now works properly, ACK aggregation when operating at GiGE speeds, fewer pure window update packets). Major network protocol stack threading and other infrastructure work. ALTQ and PF (Packet Filter). TLS (Thread Local Storage) support. DCONS support (console over firewire). IPv6 improvements. Namecache infrastructure rewritten. Improved checkpointing support. NFSv3 greatly improved. Kernel callout_*() infrastructure revamped. A lot of USB fixes. VESA console and X support. A large number of general maintainance items, such as driver updates, bug fixes, and so forth. Upgraded installer includes an option to turn it into a standalone netboot server for mass installs, bug fixes, and other new features. The RELEASE is now branched in the cvs repository.

Does a windoze app exist for the fwt. if it does it is trivial and /b legitimate /b to reverse engineer the protocol. In the same environment "high end" boxes using windows 2000 server and NTxyz have an uptime of a week to 4 weeks. That too with umpteen sysadmins running helter skelter. While we have AMCs we hardly need to maintain anything at all. Disk life on linux is longer than on a windoze box. I ve observed that disks konk out on a windoze machine in about 3 yrs. But are still running on linux boxes (4.5 yrs +). Warning no hard data just my observation on 40 to 50 machines running in the same environment. No i did not supply the windoze box. Incase of home use desktops, the only time there is a problem is when the ISP "upgrades" his stuff. since the isp engineer knows no better than click this n that we have to go to the user's place to set things right. CAVEAT. No warranty or support if you install windoze. Ya i actually specify this clause in the contract. rgds jtd

Has anyone attempted connecting the reliance CDMA to a linux (or even windows) box with the aim of an application or script to read the messages OFF the reliance phone and depending on the content of the message, take whatever action? Basically am looking for a way to communicate programmatically with the reliance phones. I am sure someone out here must have tried it out? As a parallel to the Gnokii project?
