installing rpm packages in fedora core 3

Hi, I was a windows user. I just recently switched to fedora core 3. the learning part for switching to linux is very exciting. but i find one thing confusing. in fedora, when i want to install an application (rpm format), i have to install it from the shell using rpm command. is there an existing application in fedora which will allow me to install the rpm packages from the gui? also when i install applications in windows, it gets added to program files folder by default. in linux in which folder do the application files go. why dont the applications installed appear in the start menu? it becomes very difficult to know what applications are installed. please excuse me if i posted something wrong as i am quite naive in using linux right now. Hi All, New to shell programming, Just want to learn more and more aout it. I am trying to learn more and more daily but stumble upon certain things for which I really dont have any answer. Learning about .bash_profiles now. I would like to know how to apply environment variables edited or typed into the .bash_profile script without logging out and relogging in. Suppose I implement certain changes to the .bash_profile of a user( thru which I have currently logged in) and want to implement the changes without relogging in. How do we do it ? esp if we login thru X and edit it under x-term. Thanks in advance for any help. Richard

Fedora Installatioin Problems

i just got a FEDORA CORE 3 installation CD pack of 4 i started installing and i completed the HDD partitioning. and labeling but after that it just hangs. i mean the GUI just starts being funny,the screen merges into one another when i press next. one more thing, i tried around 4 types of mice, ps/2, 2 serial port, USB. all of them get detected during the initial screen as it tells me what kind of mouse is connected. but after that i cannot operate the installation. i mean the mouse doesnt work at all. can anyone help out? can anyone tell me what do i do?

I cleaned my links ( by using $cleanlinks cmd ) inside INIT directories ...ie rcS,rc1,rc2 ( /etc/rc*) Now i have lost all the these bootup files ....the good part is ive not lost all of these files , but yes most (importants ) of them and the worst part it ..with the rest of the files i can hadly play around Can someone help me know if i can make them all over again without installating nux. Tally and Linux

The Tally dealer insists that 6.3 version of Tally will work on Linux as server AND client and once purchased, i can upgrade for free to 7.2 My question is, if it were already working on linux as server and client, why would Tally partner with Redhat and why would they make a big deal about it. TV Tuner

Can you people suggest me any TV tuner card and related things? What I want from it is: 1) It MUST work on Linux (Mostly Debian/Ubuntu) 2) It should have AV Composite so that I can play my playstation on computer with sound 3) It should be relatively easy to configure. I'd prefer autodetection 4) It should be avaliable in Mumbai market .... grant road. I tried My friend's BT878P+ Pixelview, It works fine and is autodetected, Only problem is, It has only AV Composite -- Video wire, i.e Yellow, there is no Audio Left-Right female thing on the card, So I never got to try it with sound

PCQ2005 Installation Report

Dear Friends, The PCQ Linux 2005 in the March 2005 issue is fully packed with features and its free. The system it was installed on was a P4 2.4 Ghz and Intel 845 GEBV2 motherboard. Its foundation is the Fedora Core3 linux. It has so many installation choices that its very difficult to choose. However, once you select the broader choice, before the installation starts, it gives you a package list and that is where individual packages of any type can be selected. It has a grub loader and during installation it asks if you want to add additional entries. It does not detect the existing RedHat installation and the manually added partition entry in its dialogue box is useless. The installation was smooth and everything went fine. There is however a minor hiccup of internal modem not detecting and surprisingly the 2.6 kernel does not detect my sound card, even though RHEL's 2.4 does. An older machine's external modem has been added to the system so that issue is tackled and net access is fantastic. Since there are less security programs running compared to XP, the net experience is racy. The sound driver module will have to be compiled according to Intel's website. The PCQ forum has a solution of running some sndconfig rpm but there was none for FC3. This will be a good learning exercise and I will get the steps from google. The grub script was modified to properly detect the existing RHEL and now all the 3 systems boot smoothly. Overall this is a very comprehensive free OS. It even has support for a thin diskless client server as well as clustering for supercomputing. It is rich in multimedia software. It is definately worth trying. The best part is that it is available in CDs and not DVDs. Regards, Rony.

Problem related to porting Linux on mpc8248 based board

Hi All, We are having a problem with porting of linux to the 8248 based custom board. We are using the linux kernel image modified to work on an EP8248 (having the MPC8248 Processor) Board. We have our board configured the same as the EP8248 board. We have made no changes to the Kernal Image and it crashes. GNU/ucLinux works on pdas and cell phones and a device with 32mb ram and 16 mb flash with X, sound, controls several external high power (KW) motors and runs on AA cells. You have to keep your software requirements, performance expectations and hardware config in line with the real world. Today's real world that is. Today's lowest performing box is a VIA C3 with 128mb and 40gb disk. And sarge works at a healthy clip on these. Best Linux Desktop distro or maybe FreeBSD?

Having being tormented by hajaar trojans, popups on home PCs using Windows platforms off late, I have converted them to Redhat 9.0 in the face of lot of scepticism and criticism from other users of the family. Their main concerns are: a) Ease of use b) Ease of use. The Redhat 9.0 distro was selected for no particular reason but because I had the CDs. Am not very happy though given that the CDs are a year old so support may not be available for number of things. To be able to use linux successfully as a desktop for non power users, these are the barriers I faced. a) Plug n play for devices such as USB Web cam, USB Hub, USB Card Reader. b) Internal Modem Dlink 560i+++ installation woes and lack of a versatile dialer to just click n connect for non root users. c) Winmodem detection and configuration woes. The question is: Which linux distribution can I use which will act as an effective desktop for home users which will overcome atleast most of the difficulties faced above. I am leaning towards the opinion that redhat 9.0 is not the best out there. (duh!). But whats a near ideal replacement? Gentoo? Lindows (avoidable?). Hi List, I'm new to Linux. Just got a mail from a friend about a bug in Linux/Unix. I've not tried it yet. I'm providing the mail below for your information. Is this really a bug? Biggest bug in linux/unix!!!!! U can retrieve Password of the user. This is due a well known bug in the crypto algorithm of UNIX, used to generate /etc/passwd hash. Recent fixes have recommended usage of stronger algorithms like MD5, etc., But due to the large deployment of Unix machines, world-wide, its a very difficult task, requiring huge Logistics support. Check if your machine has the vulnerability. Not the company bag and laptop carrying, tie wearing support exec. But our regular hardware guy support person. So would choosing Debian or other over Fedora create support issues? Or given that support is so negligible anyways, it wouldnt matter if it's one distro or the other? Also no mention of FreeBSD in favor or otherwise, so I am assuming, we should stick to the server side for this. Also, is there a way I can get copies of the Sarge distro from you? It is not illegal to redistribute gpld software. Irrespective of ANY contract you may have signed. If the contract restricts your rights as assigned to you by the GPL, the right of the first party to distribute is automatically revoked. If you have given a consideration ( cash, barter, anything), You can ask for a return of the consideration + costs, and return the package to RH. Upfront payment is not the issue here - it is the overall benefit to the community that drives such organisations and their people. While BG did a great commercial job, his first foray resulted from scamming IBM into buying a piece of software that the fledgling MS had not developed. This is sometimes called arbitrage in the commercial world, and the people who do it on a large scale are sometimes called robber barons. They succeed because they conceal information. Couldnt find any on the FSF site (so maybe more smoke from RH). RH has a copyright on the distro. That is sure. But I am permitted by the gpl to copy binaries and install and use and obtain the source and do as i please subject to the terms of the gpl without paying a paisa to RH. Note in the case of Suse the YAST tool is not gpl compliant. So if you copy Suse for sale you will have to remove Yast. No problem if you give it free tho. The contract itself is probably illegal as RH (or anyone else) does not hold the rights on individual programs and would have to obtain rights from individual contributors to allow them to override the gpl. Which is what dual licence is all about. The economics of such an excercise is ofcourse a different story. They cannot impose restrictions by contract stuff released under the gpl as is expressly stated in the preamble. I am quite sure about this as i follow GL daily and the gpl was discussed ad nauseum. Once released under GPL, nobody can by contract / DMCA or any means change the terms. rgds jtd
