hi saswata/amish, Agreed the no. of clients would depend on the chip and other stuff. This solution is only possible with win3k right. Actually speakin in the current system i ran multi user tally with wine, but over time the data got corrupt again and again., so then switched to vmware. Do you guys have any more ideas other thn win3k server ?

Hi, I have a problem regarding kernel re-compilation. I am trying to use SLES over intel platform servers with SCSI HDD. This server has got 4 CPU's and around 1 GB RAM. I have this application which I am trying to install, the documentation of which mentions linux kernel to be in non-smp mode.By default SLES ,whenever it detects more than 1 CPU goes into smp mode of kernel. When I am trying to reinstall the kernel by passing parameter "nosmp" the server smoothly goes through the entire installation, but after the final reboot, goes into kernel panic. Initially I though that I am choosing the wrong filesystem for /boot, but later on I tried with ext2 and resierfs to find the same end result. worst part is that if I try to boot this very system(installed with nosmp) with a bootable cd, it boots, shows all the partitions as they were created during the installation. Now things that I need to know from you people 1. what are the right parameters to be passed when installing kernel without SMP, is nosmp the only paramter or do I need to specify maxcpu also? 2. when I give a specific paramter to the kernel installation, does it ignore other default parameters (like say reiserfs modules, scsi modules, ethernet modules). 3. what is the difference between installing a module into the kernel and installing a module outside kernel (if there is anything like that ) thanks in advance Chirag __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? hi Saswata , i am sorry for the confussion. Now to my problem , i dont want my users to work in windows, i ran tally 5.4 using wne. it works ok but has some printing problems and also the data gets corrupted every now and then . the data of tally is located centrally on the server they user the mutli login version of tally, i also have tally on samba and at this point of time i have asked them to use vmware. but vmware is slow. In that qoute of urs u said somethin like haveing a win3k server and having remote multiple clients on linux. i am interested in implementing something like tht. As for our current setting we are using KDM for all the users, all the users log into the server and do stuff. These terminal emulation software that u spoke of will they allow me to connect to a win3k server ?

Thunderbird works / command line mail does not

Hi, On my FC1 I'm able to receive & send mails using thunderbird but sending mail by /bin/mail does not work. I'm using a MTNL dialup account. I use fetchmail+postfix to receive my mail at /var/mail/<username> which I read using thunderbird. In thunderbird I have configured smtp.mtnl.net.in as my outgoing server which can delivery mails successfully (I have also provided my mtnl username & password in my thunderbird smtp setup). Testing a lock on a file.

Hi all, I need a method to do the following process. a) I am populting a table in my database (which is on Oracle 9.0 on RHEL) using a.DAT file. This .DAT file is received by an FTP on my server and a scheduler program starts populating my table as soon as the file is received. b) One process on SERVER A FTPes the .DAT file on SERVER B. As soon as the FTP Process creates an image of the file on the destination server B, the process of server B is triggered while the FTP is taking place. c) Since the correct number of records are not recieved in the file in SERVER B the process in SERVER B abandones itself and the table is not properly populated. Is there a way in which i can find out (using a shell script) whether the .DAT file has been locked for FTP or not? Kindly suggest a way out. Regards, Sneh.

I am using 915 motherboard,which has a lan card onboard on it. In linux there is a problem with the sound driver as well as with the lancard. i am not able to configure both. lancard is of intel(r) pro/100 ve network connection. sound is of realtek. can please anybody help me?. Please help me (advansys scsi card )

I have Exabyte elite tape drive connected to advansys scsi card. When I do mt -f /dev/st0 it says no such device. First of all it does not detect any scsi of such hardware initially at the time of boot up. But it detected in knoppix 3.6. my debian kernel version is 2.2.20-idepci When I do dmesg it does not show any hardware of scsi but when I do lspci, It shows there. 0000:01:04.0 SCSI storage controller: Advanced System Products, Inc ABP940-U / ABP960-U (rev 03) Can anybody help me how to resolve this problem. Hey, I installed Debian sarge a while ago but am still facing 2 problems: 1) I have a 160 GB seagate sata hard drive, but during startup it fails to mount it ( I've added lines to /etc/fstab ). But when I manually mount it later after the startup it works fine. I'm guessing the SCSI modules probably load after the automount process ? 2) I have a C-Media chipset PCI soundcard , which won't show up in the volume control ( I also have an onboard intel soundcard ) or aumix or any of the mixers but lsmod does show me that its modules are loaded. Is it a problem with X or with my sound modules ? But then again, when I force-reload the modules using the alsa script ( /etc/init.d/alsa force-reload ) all the modules are loaded back and I have the soundcard mixer settings being shown in the volume control section etc. I currently use the 2.6.9-2.smp kernel which I downloaded from an unstable apt mirror ( iit-bom ) and I suppose the 2.6 kernels come with the alsa modules.I also tried installing the alsa-base and utils packages separately listed out in apt, but the problem still persists. ltsp NFS problem . plz help

Hi friends, i am having a major problem with NFS server on rh9. i am running ltsp 3.0 based thin clients. the server takes time to boot. when it reaches #starting NFS its holds there for 5 mins and then go on. the clients do not start because of this. there is no error message. even while doing #service nfs restart. this happens. it goes to #starting nfs and holds there for sometim and then goes on. can some one help me out with this. can some one also tell me how to uninstall the nfs server from rh9. that is removing the whole rpm(s). so that i can use the new NFS rpms. thanks a lot. this is very urgent. kindly be a little explanatroy. but otherwise will also help. thanks again. __________________________________ Celebrate Yahoo!'s 10th Birthday! Microsoft generally has tie-ups with third party for posting articles. If you see the source you will find that in this case its cineclick.com.br. So error at cineclick.com.br must have reflected on msn.com.br as well. FYI: cineclick server uses: Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) PHP/4.3.3 FrontPage/5.0.2.2634a mod_ssl/2.8.18 OpenSSL/0.9.7a Amish.

msn brazil uses php + mysql ?

have a look at this image. It clearly shows that at least a part of MSN Brazil website uses PHP + MySQL http://www.macan.eng.br.nyud.net:8090/images/stories/msn_screenshot.png you can verify the site by going to the URL visible in the image. also dont the path name suggest its a *nix os ? Harsh

Killing a tcp socket

Hi all, This may sound like a stupid question, but is there a utility by which I can kill an open tcp remote client socket connection , without killing the server process ? Eg, A remote client connects to a server. The server has no interface to disconnect the client. I do a netstat and get the IP address and socket of the client. Now I want to disconnect the client, so I want to issue something like $ killsocket <remoteip> <remotesocket>. Is there anyway by which I can do this ? Thanks Shahed.

Wipro Laptop

Dear Friends, Wipro has come out with a new laptop with an AMD mobile processor with all the usual stuff and it is priced (in the adv.) at 30K. Taxes must be extra. It uses Linux. I saw this ad in the papers just before Feb 28. The price was supposed to be post March 1 after some WTO relaxation??? hello, my modem is internal---motorola sm56 PCI my kernel version is 2.4.21-4.EL i downloaded it from net but when i tried to confifure by redhat-config-network it gave error.......modem card not detected. but immediately it showed me the dailog box for configurations i configured it.....but when i tried to activate it....it said....cannot activate. failed to activate the modem connection...error 2 plz help me out waiting for reply vidya

Not detecting advansys scsi card in debiab 2.2.x

I have Exabyte elite tape drive connected to advansys scsi card. When I do mt -f /dev/st0 it says no such device. First of all it does not detect any scsi of such hardware initially at the time of boot up. But it detected in knoppix 3.6. my debian kernel version is 2.2.20-idepci When I do dmesg it does not show any hardware of scsi but when I do lspci, It shows there. 0000:01:04.0 SCSI storage controller: Advanced System Products, Inc ABP940- U / ABP960-U (rev 03) Can anybody help me how to resolve this problem.
