Hi all, I am planning a firewall for an ISP setup,where I can filter the well known viruses and protect my N/W from intrusion and can be easily monitored and edited. I am planning for iptables as it is much more versatile,can u suggest me to how to go 'bout with the iptables as I'll have to open almost all the ports and block the ones which are prone to viruses and secondly how do I block the common viruses and is it possible to block spam and mail related viruses through iptables(I already got scanners installed on the mail servers) or suggest me with some better alternative or a package for this kind of setup... If you have some app that has no GNU/linux equiv you can use colinux. http://www.colinux.org/ Colinux allows you to run GNU/linux and windows at the same time like VMware. unlike vmware tho it is free and opensource - could not locate any licence on the site though. rhds jtd

But if you scaled the cost of an ISD call (1200 bytes / s * Rs.0.33 * 60 sec = Rs.20) to that of an internet page (30Kbyte / 1200 * 0.33) you would be paying Rs.8.25 per page. So technology has simplified things to the point where costs and complexity (click to connect) have reduced to negligible levels. This arg is ofcourse a bit oversimplified but valid nonetheless. Freebsd/Freesbie CDs

Anyone having Freebsd 5.3 (this is the latest Production Release, I presume) CDs available? Or know a shop in Mumbai where I can buy them? I saw the screenshots of Freesbie on osdir.com... they look AWESOME!! Anybody tried that? I'm pretty satisfied with Fedora Core 1. But I must find out what makes the Freebsd users go ga-ga about their system's virtues :) On a related note, I have made a 4.3G primary partition for Freebsd. Is this enough space for a typical home user profile? I'm not into heavy gaming or GBs of music etc... Infact one of the aims of this exercise is also to have a visually appealing but light, fast & fully functional desktop with decent amount of free space. tar file error

I had my backups in the file 'backup.tar' earlier in 2004, using the command : tar -cf backup.tar `ls -A` I needed to backup again, so (in 2005) I used the comand : tar -uf backup.tar `ls -A` But now when I try to extract from the file, using - tar -xf backup.tar I get the error : tar: This does not look like a tar archive tar: Skipping to next header tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors The archive manages to extract the files modified/created only in 2005. I dont remember getting any error messages while creating the tar file. Any pointers ?

Dear Nadiem, The issue is that Redhat 9 which U are using .... When Redhat 9.0 was released the 845 chipset was very fresh and support was not present properly ..... Just as Redhat 7.0 did not supported 810E chipset onboard sound card ... the sound was fast forwarded Redhat 7.2 came with proper driver So in Ur case better try some latest rpm for the sound driver Or better even try Fedora Core.... As you may have guessed, /dev/hda6 was the D drive from a previous (now scrapped) installation of Windows. /dev/hda1 (the original Windows C drive) is now a ReiserFS partition waiting to have Suse 9.2 installed as soon as I have the DVD iso downloaded (wget -c is busy working in the background as we speak). Cannot change volume in mp3blaster or Xine

Getting straight to the point... I have installed the TUI mp3 player called mp3blaster. I am having two problems with it: 1> It plays music too fast. 2> It does not let me increase/decrease the volume. Same applies to the Xine media player. I cannot even change the volume from the Gnome volume controller. (Or for that matter any other WM's volume controller.) I am using RH9. The thing it, this machine has the Intel 845 GL chipset. That apparently seems to be the problem. I have another machine which uses the Intel 810 chipset and everything works fine there. Has anyone else experienced the same issues? Sigdashes are a (de facto) way of specifying where your mail ends and your signature starts. They're pretty cool, because smart mailers and newsreaders can do funky things when they notice sigdashes. For example, many mail clients will strip off old signatures when replying to mails. This is a Good Thing, because, hey, just one signature per mail ya? Many mail clients, like mutt, can display signatures in a different colour or font. So, what /are/ sigdashes? The character sequence "dash dash space" on a line by themselves are collectively known as sigdashes. It looks something like this (without the quotes): "-- " Configuring your mail client to use sigdashes: Pine: Setup | Config - Composer Preferences | Enable Sigdashes - Reply Preferences | Strip From sigdashes in reply Mutt: (sigdashes on by default) in .muttrc, add set sig_dashes=yes unless it's set to "no" in /etc/Muttrc or ~/.muttrc, you do not need to do anything. Thunderbird (via TagZilla): In the TagZilla | Formatting screen, set Tagline Prefix to (without quotes) "\n-- \n" Thunderbird (no TagZilla) / Evolution / Web based mail: Include the sigdashes line as the first line of your signature file/text. Network settings (home network)

Please advise: Network settings enables the same hardware device to be configured in different ways, so for instance I can apparently set it to detect network settings automatically (so it takes the settings from the ISP's server using DHCP, just as I already do now) and also manually set it to a local address (say for instance 10.0.0.1, 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.1). These can be identified as eth0 and eth1, both referring to the same network card. My questions are based on: if both settings are activated simultaneously, can I use this feature to connect to the Net on one and connect to a local network with the other? If the machine is connected to the Net using a hub, can I then use the machine to act as a local mail server (ie, pick up my mail from my various POP addresses and hold them for local distribution when the other local machine(s) are switched on)? I presume such mail servers (qmail, etc) can also be configured to trash spam and viruses, just as clients do. And what about browsing? Is this what is meant by proxy? Can the box also act as a firewall and virus trap for browsing, using a suitable app? Guidance much appreciated. -- Vickram

Guys, I accidentally issued the command: chmod 01777 / One of the consequences seeems to be that my /var/spool/mail directory is zero bytes - I am unable to send a test mail to myself. The ouput of mailq is: [root@localhost mail]# mailq /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 91: fileclass: cannot open '/etc/mail/local-host-names': World writable directory /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 588: fileclass: cannot open '/etc/mail/trusted-users': World writable directory What are the other consequences and how do I reverse this? Hi I mentioned 'cheap' in my subject line because this is the way I have found it advertised on sites and infact discovered a site which provided for the same. unfortunately this site has stopped distributing cheap cd's. I would not mind paying a reasonable amount for a linux CD. My first mainstream distro Slack 8.0 which I used way back in 2002 was ordered from GT systems the 4 cd pack it cost me around Rs.2800/-. In the current scenario one can download the files (on a fast connection) and burn the CD and make them available at an affordable cost. This will enhance the spread of linux in India. Even many a times in this list someone asks for some distro cds there are hardly any replies. Anyone with relevant links please post it here. Thanks Ninad

Thunderbird

Dear Friends, The Mozilla Thunderbird email client really rocks. I downloaded the windows as well as the linux version and both install and work fine. The win version directly imported all my settings, mail and addresses from OE. It is a tough competition for OE in terms of features (security issues aside). The linux version does not import from other than mozilla. It does not recognise evolution. But there were 2 important features that this has and were lacking in evolution. One was that there was no clipboard interface (copy/cut/paste) in the messages in evolution so messages could not be transferred to other text editors but it is full functional in thunderbird. Another is *****It Prints***** messages. It needed a little tweak and print quality is not so good, but atleast now I can get hard copies. Taste the Thunder. www.mozilla.org Regards, Rony.

You may kickstart your Linux Installation by configuring your 1st machine as a NFS server and make the directories from the installation CDs available to the client (old machine) in the /etc/exports. Hi Recently I bought a new motherboard and assembled a PC. The config is Intel P4 2.4ghz D845GVSR 256mb RAM,on board sound card,Dlink external modem. I used the HDD and cd rom drive of my old pc (a branded IBM PC) for the new one. I am duall booting Win XP and Slack 9.1 ( i am Now I have this pc as a spare PC for which I bought a HDD(40 gb) and also got a crossover cable. This Pc has a config of Celeron 500mhz 64mRAM 40gb HDD no CDrom No floppy drive. I want to connect these two PC's My questions 1.Can I make this old PC a linux only box (dual/triple boot Linux only) and connect to my dual boot new PC. this means that my primary partition should be linux native. 2.If (1) is possible then how do I load linux in this PC which has no Cd rom/floppy drive. 3.Which distro will be suitable as a primary distro. how to run a function (set of command) with find -exec

Dear All If I run a "find option(s) -exec cmd {} \;" it executes a single command successfully. But if I want to run a set of command (i.e custom shell function) defined in script it doen't work. Please refer my query with psedo shell script defined below ------------------ #!/bin/bash MyFunction() { cmd-1 cmd-2 cmd-3 | | | cmd-n } find / -type f -exec MyFunction {} \; -->MyFunction is the name of function defined above ------------------ I can have an option to separate commands with semicolon, but consider the list of commands is very long and it can not be accumulated in a single line of the find comand. I second this.. this is what I did. Later I put both my drives in my new machine and shared the older CDROM which the old box can use for reading media. This is one thing I managed to set up.
