We need to know the following. How to create a virtual or convinience package for debian web site listing. For example a package called 'kdeedu' contains all the educational packages like khangman,kalzium etc. What they have done is kdeedu has dependencies on all the packages that constitute kdeedu itself. CUPS / Dell 720 / SAMBA / Adobe Printing Qs

Hi All, I have been trying from the last 2 days to configure my Dell 720 (Lexmark 615) printer to work with Linux + Windows (SMB) I am using SuSE 9.2, with CUPS. I have finally managed to get it to work perfectly on Linux, and on Windows using the Adobe Generic Postscript Printer. On Linux, I have it setup the printer through CUPS, with the appropriate Lexmark driver. (Color works fine) On Windows, I could only set it up, with the Adobe driver. The problem is that there is no Color. I have the Windows Driver for the printer, but it does not seem to work with CUPS. Any ideas on how I can get color working, or better, if I can get the native Windows Driver to work ? Also, on the cups site, the windows driver is not available for download (??) Thanks. Shahed

Dear Friends, Has anyone from the group actually used the Epson LX-300 dot matrix printer on Linux, with good print quality in Open Office, Evoluion and other software? If so which is that Linux version? After finally managing to get a printout in Open Office, I am again stuck in Evolution. It does not print. It not only throws out the paper but the empty roller keeps rolling for some time and I am scared it may cause overload to the motors or control circuit. Both these programs are too good but its a pity they can't print decently. I even downloaded OO 1.1.3 from the net but it still does not improve print quality, which is terrible. LX 300 is a very common SOHO printer. Regards, Rony.

Partition table problems...

Hello, I know there are hundreds of questions about fixing the partition table. But mine, i suppose is a peculiar case. My disk structure is something like this: 1) Disk 1 - 10GB /dev/hda (partitioned into C:, volgroup00 for FC3, /boot for FC3 ) 2) Disk 2 - 40GB /dev/hdb (partitioned into D:,E:, F:) Windows, Knoppix HD-Install, and even distros like Suse can read data off /dev/hdb1(2,3..) and of course off /dev/hda. However the problem comes when installing distros. Whenever it comes to partitioning step, i *always* get a message saying "/dev/hdb: This disk is not initialised. Dow u want to format? This will erase entire disk" on RedHat and "This disk cannot be read. Please format it. Ignore this messgae if u are not planning to install Suse on this partition." on suse. Also, Partition Magic and QtParted cannot read the partitions on this disk. QtParted just hangs, and Partition Magic 6.0 on startup says that this disk need to be repaired. Sad I donot know whats up, but my guess is that it is due to corrupted partition table. Is there any way to repair the partition table, without damaging the data already stored on this disk? I mean, isnt it surprising that data can be read / written perfectly on this disk? What is the problem? Also, in addition to this question, does QtParted support resizing and modifying data on a partition without damaging the data? problem with fedora booting

Hi all, I am facing this typical problem with Fedora core 3 . I did not face this problem with any of previous Redhat distros. I have a 40 gb hdd of which 32 is usable. My partitioning is as follows: 1) C:\ ------- 4gb 2) D:\---------10gb 3) E:\---------remaining I installed windowsxp in C: Then i installed fedora core 3 by deleting D: partition and have /boot ,swap and root partition for fedora core 3.I installed grub in the MBR. The installation went fine.But when i rebooted it brought me to the grub command line I did not get the grub OS selection screen. I tried giving the root partition on the grub command line.But it always told me that it lies outside the cylinder range.This problem never happened with previous versions of redhat or fedora. I also tried with other setup. After starting the installation of Fedora I deleted all the partitions and installed Fedora core 3 within the first 2 gb with /boot,swap and root partition.This was a minimal install.Grub was installed in MBR Then i installed Fedora core 1 after fedora core 3 using the same /boot and swap as that of fedora core3.I did not install grub for fedora core 1.Instead i modified the /boot/grub/grub.conf to include the 2.4.22 kernel of Fedora core1. This time it gave me the OS selection screen with both kernels.I could boot into Fedora core3 but not into fedora core1.It still gave me that the root partition is out of boot cylinder range. Can anyone help me out? Pankaj

Hi, i had followed the same approach.First I checked whether the SQLNET service is listed in /etc/services.It was not , so i added an entry to the same.Next I denied access to this service in hosts.deny for a particular IP , but still the machine with the specified IP(the one to whom the SQLNET service was denied) is able to connect to oracle.The service is not listed in xinetd.d.What shud i do next ? *Minutes of December GLUG-Meet @ KReSIT - IIT* The GNU/Linux Users Group of Mumbai held its December GLUG meet at KReSIT - IIT Bombay on 19th December 2004. This meet was attended by about 25 people coming from all over the city. Following discussions and talk were held: -> *Python Programming - by Steve* Steve Fernandes from Ensim specially came down form Pune to give a talk on Python. Python is an upcoming language which is being considered by many as an ideal programming language which a beginner and people from non-programming background can start with. Python, which was originally developed by scientists and mathematicians has many inherent advantages that makes it favored for a lot of applications. Python is used in a large number of places like redhat's config tools as well as complex and heavy applications like Zope and GNU Mailman. A Python program flows like poetry, hence it is easy to read and self documenting. Please see homepage for full presentation slides of Python talk. By the way, the language "Python" is named after the BBC show ``Monty Python's Flying Circus'' and has nothing to do with nasty reptiles. -> *Mono - by Amish* Amish Munshi from Novell gave a talk on Mono. Mono is being very agressively developed and is soon going to reach its 2.0 version in mid 2005. Hi All, I installed debian sarge on my PC today, and suddenly I discovered a lot of new problems. 1. I am not able to dial the internet using kppp, it connects and says pppd died (return code 1) 2. wvdial "cannot detect dialtone", although I can clearly hear it from the modem. 3. x server does not start up. It does _not_ throw an error, however the screen blanks out, but the frequency is _not_ out of range(the monitor does _not_ blink). The modem and X was working fine until the morning, when I was using FC2. Can anybody help? -- Ketan Padegaonkar

Apache 1.3.33 problem

I compiled apache 1.3.33 and installed it in /usr/local/apache. But the website is not showing up. Firefox says the connection was refused (I am typing in 'http://localhost/'). If I try to view the status using the 'apachectl' application, here's the output I get : [root@localhost htdocs]# ../bin/apachectl status ERROR at dump.c:188: Network is unreachable 'netstat -a' shows the following output : Active Internet connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0 *:http *:* LISTEN I am running Fedora Core 3 with mostly the default options (firewall and everything). I haven't installed the pre-packaged httpd. Somehow, I don't feel this is an Apache problem, it seems that I am just not able to connect to it. I just installed debian sarge from the PCQ Debian dvd on a new elcheapo laptop. It is fast, stable and absolutely easy to install. Infact i found the expert install a trifle irritating (thought easier for a newbie) while partitioning as u require more key presses than the plain old cfdisk. IMHO in a production environment stability and continued subsequent maintanence (very minimal but neccessary) is most important. The debian apt packaging system and hundreds of fast mirrors make maintanence a breeze - even for a nontechie newbie. Debian packaging policy also insists on stability over other factors (except freedom). And since u are going to pay someone to install insist on debian - the commercial-politic free distro. Also i have found the reiserfs file system to be astoundingly reliable - 8 to 10 power outs a day for the past 6 mths without any file corruption. Dear Mumbai Linuxers: I have decided to take the plunge by migrating to a GNU-Linux desktop, and have just bought a 240MB/40GB/1.66GHz AMD Athlon for this purpose, to work alongside my Powerbook running Mac OSX. I need someone to help me install and configure the new machine with a Linux distribution and basic set of applications, and and would also like to discuss my options and choices in this regard. I am wondering if someone on the list can visit my studio in Dadar to help with the installation over the next few days, and discuss how much remuneration is appropriate for the work. Getting to KReSIT within IIT ============================ The new KReSIT building is now fully operational - one of the most impressive structures in the IIT-Bombay campus! SSH

Hello Linuxers, Whenever I try to ssh form my rh9 box to other boxen on the network, the fingerprinting fails. The error given is "cannot create directory /home/foo/.ssh". This directory is, ofcourse, required to store the fingerprint (known_hosts) and dsa keys. I verified the perms on the directories and even tried creating the directory manually, but no go. My ultimate aim is to setup ssh without keys, so that a user can ssh to/from my box without being prompted for passwords or passphrases. Any help would be appreciated. Open Office Printer

Dear Luggers, My printer queue name is 'LX300' and device is a local printer /dev/lp0. What command should I add in the command line for the open office printer setup? I tried lpr, lp -d LX300, lpr -d LX300 but nothing seems to work. The test page in the OO printer setup simply ejects the page out. The Red Hat printer setup prints the test page properly. Any help will be most appreciated. I finally figured it out upto this point from googling the net, but this is the last hurdle. Regards, Rony.
