Please furnish more info about the vid card you use, if its integrated into the the motherboard and such info. Was the original Knoppix you had downloaded working fine on your hardware? Right now, you might want to boot Knoppix to console and try probing your hardware, if you are sure that support for your AGP is included in teh version of X that is included in teh Knoppix version. -- cheers

Welcome to the GNU/Linux User Group of Bombay (ilug-bom)! READ THESE GUIDELINES CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THEM CLOSELY Now that you are a member you can read and post mails to the group. The messages have to be related to propogating, using, trouble-shooting, bug-fixing, of GNU/Linux operating system. Feature comparision of other operating systems and distributions is allowed, but restrain from BASHING. GNU/Linux is possibly the most friendly operating system, and hence as users of the OS let us all maintain a FRIENDLY tone to our conversations on the list. YOU are the best judge to determine the relevance or irrelevance of your post to GNU/Linux, and therefore you are responsible for your postings. Since this is not a moderated list, please read the guidelines before posting mails to the list. The sole functioning of this list is based on the self disciplinary nature of its users. ILUG-Bom Mailing List participation Guidelines 1. Keep paragraphs and messages short and to the point. See that what you are writing is useful to the mailing list. If not, send it as a private message to the person. (Note that by default the mails go to the LIST) Please change the sender address appropriately before sending a personal mail. 2. When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing software automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Nobody likes reading a long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by a one line response: "Yeah, me too". Messages larger than 7k will not be posted immediately. Use the underscore symbol before and after the title of a book, i.e. _Linux Configuration And Installation_ Underscores may also be used to signify _underlining_, while surrounding your text with slashes makes it /italics/. 5. Limit line length to approximately 65-70 characters and avoid control characters. This helps ensure that lines don't grow too long after several levels of replies. Remember that each reply adds one level of > to the start of the line. 6. NEVER send chain letters to the mailing list. A mail simultaneously sent to more than 10 users will not reach the list. This is to eliminate possible spammers/bulk mailers to reach the list. 7. Be careful when using sarcasm and humour. Without face to face communications your joke may be viewed as criticism. When being humourous, use emoticons (smileys) to express humour. (tilt your head to the left to see the emoticon smile) :-) = happy face for humour. 8. If a mail has offended you personally, please send a private message to the person expressing how you feel, instead of sending it to the mailing list. 9. Please remember that we have both male and female members. No gender abuse is allowed on the list, and do not include any gender specific slang in your posts. 10. Acronyms can be used to abbreviate when possible, however messages that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader. Examples: IMHO = in my humble/honest opinion FYI = for your information BTW = by the way Flame = antagonistic criticism. http://www.jargon.org for more such acronymns. 11. Please provide URL's to articles wherever possible. Avoid cutting and pasting whole articles especially considering the fact that all may not be interested. In any case your posting may not be more than 7k. Occassionally if you may have to send such a mail, post it, it will reach the members after the list admin approves it. 12. When using the mailing list for commercial purpose, please prefix the subject line with "COMMERCIAL". 13. Please *read all your mails before replying* to a mail. Someone may have already answered it. 14. Remember that most of the people are paying by the minute for their internet access. Some pay per byte. Hence please do not waste bandwidth. Ensure your posts are in plain text only. Do not post html mails, or include attachments. Restrict signatures to not more than 4 lines of 72 column text. Do NOT include company disclaimers in your messages. 15. Any violation to the above will be given a warning. 5 such warnings and the subscriber will be suspended from the mailing list for 15 days. [ILUG-BOM]Problem with using IMAP daemon.

Hello Luggers, I am trying to use Squirrelmail (a web based email client). It requires an imap service running. I want to access my mails in /var/spool/mail/rajen. I don't know much about how to use imap nor have I read much about it anywhere. I installed imapd (UW), and xinetd. I enabled imap in /etc/xinetd.d/imap file, which looks like, service imap { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = root server = /usr/sbin/imapd flags = IPv4 } Then I enabled imap in inetd.conf, which looks like, imap stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd imapd I still could not log in using Squirrelmail. I then tried to use telnet on port 143. When I connect I get the following message, Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4REV1 LOGIN-REFERRALS STARTTLS LOGINDISABLED] localhost IMAP4rev1 2002.332 at Wed, 15 Oct 2003 12:37:52 +0530 (IST) The problem it seems to me is that is imapd starts with LOGINDISABLED. How can I change that? Or is it so that imapd is compiled with this option. The man pages nor the documentation available with the package is of any help. BTW, I am using Suse Linux 8.2 ... Rajen.

Hi There, I am having trouble installing GAIM on my machine (SUSE 8.2). It asks for glib and pkgconfig. My SUSE package installer says that glib 2.2.1 is installed but my pkgconfig cant seem to find out where. can you guys help me out. By the way, its just been 2 days since i have shifted from windows to linux so this is a newbie question. Regards, Mathew

Hi, I am planning to use Lynx on my windows box. Problem is that the proxy server is a Micro$soft platform and setup for windows integrated authentication. Due to this reason, I am able to use only Internet Exploder to access net. Is there any way to set Lynx for windows or SOCKs authentication? I came across this GTK based downloader for Linux. It's really fast loading and full-featured like the famous flashget for windows. You might want to try it out - http://www.krasu.ru/soft/chuchelo/ While wget is good, it lacks multiple stream downloading, and for Joes, a gui and a few more things like scheduling, b/w control etc etc. Also there's a superb ad filter - bfilter - for linux. http://bfilter.sourceforge.net/ Its ad detection is heuristic in nature and hardly requires any fine tuning. Needless to say all the ads on my screen have vanished. As if that wasn't enough the author is planning on flash ad detection and removal. hi everyone, i need help on a sql query. consider a table weather containing a column city. suppose i have two rows with data in the city column as 'new delhi' and the second as 'new whatever'. so to select one row with say 'new delhi' i would give the following sql command SELECT * FROM weather WHERE city = 'new delhi'; what is the query if i want to select all rows with 'new' as a pat of the string in the city column? in this case both the above rows should be returned thanks rahul.

Hi There. I am looking for some hard core technical documentation and articles which explains how to build a highly scalable standalone linux server for hosting purposes. It will be running a combination of Billing Software, Network Monitoring, Security (some form of encryption), Web Server, Database (mysql and postgres) which could lead to heavy usage. I know certain queries can be googled but what I am really interested in is people's recommendation with pointers that talk about lessons learned from folks who have built heavy duty servers (w/ storage requirements, raid, ram, processors..etc) for a data center environment. Hi Friends, I have to manipulate ( rotate ) a tiff file having 5600 x 6600 pixels. For that I created a pixbuf from file Glib::RefPtr<Gdk::Pixbuf> m_ppixBuf; m_ppixBuf = Gdk::Pixbuf::create_from_file(filename ); int lHeight = m_ppixBuf->get_height(); int lWidth = m_ppixBuf->get_width(); int lRotatedRowStride = m_ppixBuf->get_rowstride(); Then collected data in a local variable, gchar* pixdata = m_ppixBuf->get_pixels(); Allocating equivalent memory to one temporary variable gchar* tmpdata = (char *) malloc( lHeight * lWidth * lNo_of_channels); Then coying pixels one by one from source to target using memcpy function. // case 90 degree : for(j = 0, k = (lHeight-1); j < lHeight; j++, k--) { for(i = 0; i < lWidth; i++) { memcpy(&tmpmap[i * lRotatedRowStride + k * iNo_of_Channel], &bitmap[j * lRowstride + i * iNo_of_Channel], iNo_of_Channel); } } This code works fine , but takes lot of time to rotate large image. Is there any other way to make this operation faster? Also I want to save modified pixbuf in "tiff" file, but GDK library allows me to save only in PNG and JPEG format. Hi friends, I am facing the foollowing problem with LDAP based authentication. Let me explain about it. I am in the first phace and so only a single machine is acting as client. The domain name which I am using is dc=it,dc=iitb,dc=ac,dc=in And in the client side I configued the authentication part for LDAP based authentication. ( ie LDAP server as 10.129.50.37 -which is the ip of my server Base dn as dc=it,dc=iitb,dc=ac,dc=in ) Using the migration tool, I migrated the accouts from the client to server and it is comimg under ou=People subtree in the LDAP tree. Then I deleted all other accounts( root, postgres etc. ) from the LDAP tree and only one guest account of the client I kept there. Then I removed the guest user from the client and tried to login to that with the assumption that I can login through the LDAP. But it is not allowing me for that and the usual invalid username or password mesaage is what I am getting. So friends, Is there anything wrong in what I am doing ? or Is there something more I have to do ? I'm currently looking for teams who can provide (1) bandwidth availability (2) measure availability and identify outages daily, monthly, quarterly and yearly (3) outage cause analysis report to prevent similar outages (4) alert notification via pager and email (5) capacity planning (6) periodically audit router and switch configuration for consistency along w/ tactical on-call 24x7x365 support coverage via the monitoring tool(s). Hello All, I hv win98 & LINUX 8.0 on my HD now i want to use this HD on another PC but if i choose LINUX option from LILO, system restarts. & if win98 , it gives error - ' A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable . Hi.. I am having problem in configuring my Squid Server.. Problem is that.. i able to access net through port 80 and the default ports tht are mentioned in /etc/squid/squid.conf file... I want to all my port open for two way communication.. Like as of now i am not able to connect thru..Kmail service... I almost forgot, this solution needs to be running on a linux box because lot of companies whom I'm dealing with, will absolutely refuse to punch holes to their firewalls to allow m$ box(s) sniffing/baselining their networks specially w/ the recent attacks which is obviously not the last. Port control is done by firewall(man ipchains; man iptables). You need to open those ports. However, I find your question little unclear that if kmail is running on same machine or other machine on network. Most linux distributions have firewalls configured to allow outgoing connections. So Kmail should work if it is running on the same machine. Otherwise you need to setup your machine as a gateway. Amish.

i came across a peculiar problem in C: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ float a = 2.5, b = 2.5; printf ( " %f " , b++ / a + b-- ) ; ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ the weirdest part is that it gives different answers depending on the compiler used: gcc (2.95.2) :- 3.5 turbo C :- 4.5 jdk1.4 (gnu/linux) :- 4.5 my problem is, if such / similar question arises in gate (IIT entrance exam for M.Tech), what should i write? any help regarding the actual concept of solving problems similar to the above will be greatly appreciated. p.s.: Let Us C - yeshwant kanithkar -> appendix A (precedence of operators) -> increment/decrement operators, says that increment/decrement operators act from right to left. what does that mean? thank you for all the help ;-)

Hi all, I am trying to decompress hdstg2.img from Redhat 9.0 CD from /redhat/base folder to extract contents unfortunately it does not looks to be compressed in standard format gunzip < hdstg2.img > hd.img failed with the error stdin: not in gzip format This did worked when I tried long back in 6.2 Any help will be appreciated Regards
