Dear Sir, This mail is in reference to your article "BuzzCut", page 12, Network Computing, July 2003. ".............As though the SCO v/s IBM standoff wasn't enough, the Linux battle is going to get murkier as thousands of underlying patented codes from different sources lie within its source. How these patents will affect SCO's claims of intellectual property infringements remains to be seen." This morning was to jolt me so bad that i decided to pen this following email and give your publication a piece of my mind. Sir....these lines as commented in your esteemed magazine don't seem to be well researched. I have been an avid reader for a long time now but such attrocious comments i won't stand for. Besides, i also suggest your publication takes sometime to review the story on how Microsoft post alignment with SCO has got the frailing victim to sue IBM and create the ensuing stir in markets world wide. It just goes to show the kind of cheap tricks mircosoft will play towards creating FUD about the Open Source and Free Software Movement. Rather than get further from the crux of the issue, my humble suggestion would be to give an impartial look to the SCO v/s IBM story in your coming edition since you have already taken the trouble to harness FUD in IT users nationwide with your article. It indeed would help provide readers with clarity on the ETHICS of Microsoft and other Bullies in the market place. [ILUG-BOM] FYI: Changing order of buttons and command hotkeys in Metacity

Hi all! I use Red Hat Linux 9 with Gnome 2 and till now I was using Sawfish as my window manager instead of Metacity for the following reasons: 1) Metacity doesn't allow "Always on top" kind of functionality 2) Metacity doesn't have kbd shortcuts for running arbitrary commands 3) The close button is right next to maximize so I occasionally ended up closing a window when I meant to max/minimize it. Well, I figured out how to get 2 & 3 done. Fire up Gconf Editor (run command "gconf-editor") and navigate to apps > metacity > general. To modify the ordering of buttons change the value of "button_layout" parameter. Look at the "Key Documentation" pane for information on how to set the values. For mapping commands to keyboard shortcuts, first define commands in apps > metacity > keybinding_commands. You'll find keys like "command_1" through "command_12". Set their values to the commands you want to run. Next, go to apps > metacity > global_keybindings and set the keyboard shortcut for each command_.? as the value of its corresponding run_command_.? key. For example, to lock the screen using key combination Ctrl+Shift+l, do this: - Go to apps > metacity > keybinding_commands - set value of command_2* to "xscreensaver-command -lock" (without quotes) - go to apps > metacity > global_keybindings - set value of run_command_2 to "<Ctrl><Shift>l" (without quotes, with angle brackets) - try Ctrl+shift+l to test your new setting :) * command_1 was set to allow logging off using the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combo, but I suspect it was due my prefs that I set earlier. RECENTLY, a shiftover of mail-servers in Goa (from Goatelecom to Sancharnet.in) caused quite a few glitches in e-mail access here. Below are some threads from the debate. We are trying to find solutions (many have been found), and seek your help in pointing us in the right direction. Please note that some of the suggestions below are tentative and not tested in all conditions. Hence, your suggestions on these, and pointing out of inaccuracies, would be more than welcome. I am using RH 7.2. Dialling through kppp script is also not smooth due to long time it takes for password authentication. But this connect now takes ages at least 1.5 min from handshake tone to final connection. Is this a problwm with Sancharnet speeds? Or is it a problem with my machine? Just put your outgoing smtp server as localhost (or your machine hostname) Exim listens on the port 25 of your local machine as defined in your inetd.conf file. You don't need to edit it. Just a tip: If you use fetchmail to retrieve your email you can install one of the many available pop3 servers. Old email clients do not support authorization. Change your email client. You may not be able to send email using an MTA such as sendmail, postfix, exim etc.. Use an email client directly or get the use of an alternative SMTP server(relayhost) -- Derek Cordeiro <derek_cordeiro(a)gmx.net> Strange -- I had no problems in setting up wvdial. It just worked with same options as for Goatelecom. Regarding the mail sending -- a line on CSI-Goa (Computer Society of India-Goa chapter) list helped. I got three helpful responses. Sancharnet requires authentication for sending mails. I set that option on Sylpheed and it is working. -- Anil Seth <anilseth(a)sancharnet.in> Thats good to hear. But does wvdial.conf have the option Stupid Mode = 1 enabled? Sylpheed supports SMTP auth. Not all email clients support the same. Older versions of kmail -- e.g. kmail on RHL7.2 Debian woody 3.0, Mandrake 8.1 -- do not support smtp auth. MTAs most probably will not support the same as they are full fledged SMTP servers and not any email client like Sylpheed. Sancharnet could, like many other servers, have allowed POP before SMTP authentication so that most users (using sendmail, postfix, old email clients) will be able to use the given SMTP server BTW users of old versions of ppp should use 'passive' instead of 'silent'. -- Derek Cordeiro <derek_cordeiro(a)gmx.net> ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debian vs Redhat: In Debian the wvdial package contains a file /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial-pipe whereas in RedHat Lnx the same does not exist. Is it that this file is not important?(Then why does it continue to exist even in Knoppix?) There is a utility called pppstatus in Debian Woody(and Knoppix). The same I downloaded and compiled on Mandrake, RedHat, But it fails to do the job (it provides a terminal interface graph). Has anyone tried it, Any answers? -- Derek Cordeiro I can add a lot to that since yesterday I made a mess of my dialup accounts. Redhat ppp dialer (rather the ifup-ppp script) also uses a file in the same directory. It is created with the names like ppp0, ppp1. It contains the command for connecting to the ISP using wvdial. (These files should actually be temporary and dynamic and should be cleaned up when the connection is closed. My problem may have been a side effect of abnormal terminations.) For the curious, I used a shortcut to make sancharnet correspond to ppp0. The idiot kept dialing goatelecom! I got rid of goatelecom entry in wvdial.conf. It then complained about no phone number. Oh, well. I learnt - short cuts are dangerous. Regarding the ppp status, from my experience with Modem Lights, I would guess that these programs actually use the Modem Lock file for the status. If the modem is using /dev/ttyS0 and the monitoring program is using /dev/modem, the status will not be shown. The file name will be something like /var/lock/LCK..ttyS0 -- Anil Seth <anilseth(a)sancharnet.in> These files i.e. ppp0, ppp1 to my knowledge only contain a command wvdial with different options. The file "wvdial-pipe" contains pppd options like "noipdefault" etc. That's the reason I want to know it's significance.(It does not contain the command wvdial) The RedHat Network control creates ppp0, ppp1,...only upto version 8.0. RHL 9.0 directly edits the /etc/wvdial.conf file. sendmail problem

Dear Friends, I'm using RedHat 8 with sendmail 8.12.5. I'm facing a lot of problems while writing rules & mailer. My requirement is to process all the relay mails depending on recipient users(which i'll create in a db) & if user exists there then it will rewrite envelope address & use predefined smtp server (which is not in dns), a local server whose ip address is available. Can anybody help me to sort this issue? debian cramfs? kernel panic unable to mount

On boot, Debian shows a prompt: wait 5 seconds, or hit enter for a shell prompt. On my system, if I hit enter I get a shell prompt but none of the commands work (everything: not found). Anyway, if I then exit the shell, it eventually says cramfs: wrong magic and kernel panic: unable to mount root fs blah. But if I don't drop to the shell, don't touch anything, it still says cramfs: wrong magic, but boots anyway without any panics. [ILUG-BOM] Printing - Saving color for Web Pages with background images?

Hello, I would like to know if there is anyway to avoid printing the background images of Web pages. These images are using up the color cartridges fast. If the Web page is 1 or 2 pages long then it is not a problem. The problem is with 10+ pages where the Web page background images uses up all the ink. Is there any way to avoid print the backgroud images on Web pages? All I want is the content and any pertinent diagrams on the page to be printed. nspluginviewer does not work for particular user

Hello All, I have some strange problem arising from no where since last 3-4 days. I have 3 users on my machine, amish, deepak and root. I am trying to run a realplayer song locally as well as through apache. I try these 2 commands. 1) konqueror /home/amish/public_html/songs/myfavsong.ram 2) konqueror http://192.168.1.1/~amish/songs/myfavsong.ram Both worked fine and played the song earlier(before 3-4days). However, since 3-4days, if I login as user 'amish', I can not run the song using second command and konqueror hangs. Then I have to kill nspluginviewer so that konqueror starts working (it still doesnt play the song). No sooner I kill nspluginviewer I get following error on terminal. DCOP aborting call from 'konqueror-<pid>' to 'nspluginviewer-<pid>' Both the commands still work if run as root or deepak, first command works for all. As far as I remember I have not made any changes to system. So I dont know whats going wrong. Mostly its nspluginviewer or some problem with something related to DCOP or some configuration. But I dont know what. Or can it be some konqueror security related to local browsing and web browsing, like in IE? But where are such options? I would be thankful if someone has solution. Thank you. Release notes for GNOWSYS version 0.4. GNOWSYS: Gnowledge Networking and Organizing System. Useful for knowledge/content management, semantic web, building ontologies, building portal sites, link management etc. Learn more about it from http://www.gnowledge.org. In this version of GNOWSYS we have added a number of new modules. The core GNOWSYS engine of the earlier releases has been improved with better catalogue support. 1. Changes to GNOWSYS Core Semantic Engine: Amongst the main improvements to the core engine over GNOWSYS version 0.3 is that now the catalog support has been improved. All the Object Types, Objects, Association Types, and Associations entries are catalogued. Facet Types and Occurrence Types are yet to be fully supported by Catalog. This feature can be effectively used for large gnowledge bases, since ZOPE catalog increases the response time. In future releases Facet Types and Occurrence Types will also be catalogued. In GNOWSYS 0.4 the User Interface has also been changed. Amongst improvements to user interface. The layout of the index_html for an Object and an Object Types has been changed. We tried to get all the metadata of the objects visible. This may make the system a little slow, but useful for the users to know how to query for the most useful metadata of the objects. Users can modify all of this since we copy the entire template as dtml files in the instance. In association types now we have new associaton type called as rigid associations. By rigid association we mean: when an object is installed as an instance of an object type, which is defined as a role in a rigid association type, then the association will be automatically made. This works more like an RDBMS relation between two tables. Apart from these changes there are numerous other small changes and bug fixes. 2. New modules in GNOWSYS. In this release a number of new modules have been added, they are as follows. 1. Functional Representation (Execute) 2. Graphical Representation (Draw Maps) 3. Import Export (XML Data Exchange, TopicMaps (XTM)) 4. Publishing Module (Publish) Modules 2 and 4 may not work in non-UNIX operating systems without lot of tweaking. Most of this is due to the use of external programs like TeX and MetaPost. In future we will make this truly interoperable. 3. In future we will have: - authentication module (multi-user, role based with integration with the ObjectType Members), - work-flow (keeping track of objects and status), - RDF and OIL support for data exchange to make it ready for semantic web community. - XUL GUI for editing GNOWSYS sites effortlessly from Mozilla/Netscape and using a GTK/QT client. - UTF-8 support - skins or at least a style sheet - optimizing for speed - and improving all the above and continueing to fix bugs. VNC at 1024x768 resolution??

Hello I am accessing a Linux system via the VNC server. The VNC client is running on Win2K. After the connection is established, the VNC client window opens up as a 800x600 window. The XF86Config is using the resolution at 1024x768. Some of the items from the Linux system are going beyond the VNC client boundry. When I try to maximize the window, the display is still at 800x600 with broad dark strips around the window. The display resolution on Win2K is greater than the 1024x768 resolution. How can I increase my VNC Client to show the Linux system at 1024x768 resolution? iptables - packet marking

I know of packet marking in iptables. But could anyone enlighten me which field of an ip packet does the netfilter, mark ?? Is it related with the marking scheme in QoS ?? i could find no doc stating exactly which field of a packet is marked. Of Intel, AMD, Apple and IBM

Hi, I wonder if anyone has been noticing this lately... Apple recently announced the new G5 as the fastest PC in the industry. AMD has done some Intel creaming too. But very few know what's common between them. It's IBM. PowerPC chips that run on Macs are developed at IBM. How's AMD connected then? AMD's design team runs from an IBM chip design facility. Seems that IBM will help AMD and Apple develop the newer 64 bit platforms. Ahem... the new G5 is 64 bit (P4 is 32 bit). First, maybe AMD wants to sell itself. Second, maybe IBM wants to make sure that Intel has some competition. Whatever may be the going-ons but I think IBM is trying to do something major here... Any insights anyone? Regards, ah

Hi all, It would be nice if people took the following steps when writing to the list: 1. Do not top-post. When you quote an earlier message, be sure to quote _only_ the relevant parts, and write your reply _below_ the quoted matter. Please do not just start your reply on top of a quoted message - such messages go on increasing size so that the actual information content goes down with every reply. 2. Use the standard lead-in "> " (greater-than and a space" to mark quoted text. Most email clients are designed to recognise this character sequence, making the messages more readable. 3. When someone posts simple questions like "permission denied, what do I do?" or "how do I uninstall foobar rpm?" I think its better if list members provide pointers to newbie documentation instead of spoon-feeding the answers. Sameer.
