What do u mean u r not getting the configuration files properly. If you are running a Red Hat Distro with Grub as your boot loader, openmosix doesnt require any effort to install. I have installed 2.4.18-openmosix4 on my box and it gave me no problems. The only file i had to modify was /etc/mosix.map, there i had to manually add the other nodes in the network running openmosix. If u dont have Grub then you have to manually edit your /etc/lilo.conf file to add the new kernel image(/boot/vmlinuz-openmosix) to your conf file. Just boot using the new kernel, start openmosix with /etc/init.d/openmosix start, and enjoy. Detecting X in a script

I'm trying to write a script in which a message is displayed by xmessage if X is running otherwise message is displayed by echo I tried this : if [ -f /tmp/.X0-lock ] then xmessage message else echo message However lets suppose that I'm running X and working on a Virtual Console. the file /tmp/.X0-lock would then exist. Mosix Clustering Problem

Hi all, I downloaded current stable version of linux kernel 2.4.20. and I applyed the patch of open mosix to that kernel. I enable all options regarding openmosix.in the xconfig. after completion of all steps in the kernel installiation I reboot my machine. whatever I enable in the xconfig that all are working properly except that openmosix files. Before getting to the details let's consider slammer (again). What made slammer so successful? The overriding factor that made slammer so successful was it's ability to spread. What made it's spread a foregone conclusion was the fact that every vulnerable SQL Server/MSDE had a "jmp esp" instruction at address 0x42B0C9DC. This was the address that was used to gain control of the SQL Server's path of execution to a point where the worm's payload, the "arbitrary code", would be executed. This address is in a dynamic link library (DLL) , sqlsort.dll which has an "image base" of 0x42AE0000. Every image file, DLL or executable, has an "Image Base" and this base is the preferred location where the file should be loaded into memory by the Windows Loader. [I don't want to digress, here, as to what happens if there's a conflict. See the references at the end.] Now if this Image Base on one particular system had been 0x42AF0000 then the worm would have failed to infect this particular box; the "jmp esp" instruction that should've been at 0x42B0C9DC on this system would be found at 0x42B1C9DC so the worm would have been off target. The SQL Server running on this system, whilst still being "vulnerable" to the buffer overflow vulnerability would have been invulnerable to this worm. Sure - the SQL Server may have crashed - but it would not have been compromised. It's like sickle cell. Someone born with the gene that causes sickle cell anaemia, a blood disorder that affects many people of a West African origin, or carriers of the gene, sickle cell trait, do not suffer from the ill affects of malaria, a disease caused by a parasite and most commonly spread by mosquitoes. Whilst someone with sickle cell trait can still catch malaria, the gene mutates the haemoglobin in their blood in such a way that they are invulnerable to the debilitating side effects and syptoms of the disease such as mental confusion, coma and death. There is an obvious evolutionary advantage to sickle cell trait; remember that the evolution of the species cares not about how long a person lives, only that they live long enough to pass on their genes. (Those with anaemia may suffer from crises, periods of acute pain so the trade off is somewhat questionable.) In areas where malaria is a common cause of death, being a carrier of the sick cell gene can help ensure that this person lives long enough to have progeny. This is Darwinian natural selection in progress. Rebasing ******* The problem with operating systems is that they all have pretty much the same "genetic code" which makes each and every one of them vulnerable to a new exploit. So we need to make them different and this can be achieved through rebasing. Rebasing is the process of changing the Image Base of an image file. By doing this the DLL/EXE is loaded into a different location in the virtual address space. Going back to Slammer, had I have rebased sqlsort.dll giving it a new base of 0x41410000 my box would have been invulnerable to the worm. If another worm were written, though, that used an address that contained a "jmp esp" instruction in kernel32.dll then I would be vulnerable. So I rebase kernel32.dll. But then another worm uses another DLL so I rebase that one, too. Eventually I've rebased all of the DLLs used by SQL Server mutating it's "genetic code", making it considerably different to any other SQL Server install on the planet. In fact if I rebase every DLL on my system and every executable then I can make my box almost invulnerable to a given exploit, past, present or future. It's not that my box is invulnerable to a buffer overflow vulnerability - it's just invulnerable to the exploits for it. To gain control of a system protected in such a way would require that the author of the exploit know the location of loaded DLLs. So how easy is it to rebase DLLs and executables? Very. Microsoft have provided a function to do this, ReBaseImage(), exported by imagehlp.dll. If you rebase an image the new base must be on a 64K boundary - i.e. if the image base mod 64000 !=0 the base is not valid. The only other problem is Windows File Protection. Once you've rebased a copy of the DLL you need to copy the new DLL over the old one but Windows File Protection won't allow you to do this. To get around the problem use the MoveFileEx and specifying the MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT flag. Doing this will add a registry value, "PendingFileRenameOperations" to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\. You then need to add another DWORD value "AllowProtectedRenames" and set it to 1. Then restart the system. On reboot the new DLLs, with their new image bases, will be loaded. For example - here is sample output of listdlls after kernel32.dll and ws2_32.dll have been rebased. Now all the way through this I've been saying things like "almost invulnerable" etc. Here's the reason. For some vulnerabilities it may be sufficient to overwrite a saved return address, function pointer or whatever by only a few bytes. For example assume a saved return address is 0x44784500 and at address 0x44784536 is a "jmp ebx" instruction and ebx points to our code. Then we only need to overwrite the saved return address by 1 byte - with 0x36. So knowledge of the DLL load address is not needed. However, this scenario is going to happen so infrequently (if ever) that it does not detract from the idea of rebasing your system. There may other ways to bypass this method. Some ideas to further help prevent exploits from working. Use addresses such as 0x**000000 or 0x00**0000 for the new image base. With there being a NULL in much of the image's address space this will help. (This of course won't make a difference with unicode overflows) Ensure at least one (core) DLL has a base of 0x00119400 . This will ensure that a common stack location 0x00120000 has been assigned forcing the OS to chose another location for the stack. You get the idea. Feel free to mail me/lists with comments. Hi, I have the following setup. I have a client who has 10 offices across Mumbai. Each office has approximately 50 people on the LAN. All offices have a linux server that connects to a central office RAS via dial up. LAN users can then access servers located at the central office for nightly database updates etc.. All IPs used are RFC 1918 non-routable type. I want to install mail services for the client. A mail server will be placed at the central location. This mail server will be connected to the internet and receive all mails destined for the organisation - say fooabc.org. There will be mail servers at each branch office also which will handle intraoffice mail - i.e. mails within a single office. I want to know if we can use the same domain name say fooabc.org at each branch location. Essentially, when each branch mail server receives a mail for userA(a)fooabc.org, it should look up a table(or whatever) to find out if userA exists locally in that branch office. If userA exists then it should keep the mail locally. In case userA is at some other location, then the mail should be forwarded to the central mail server. I have a faint idea that LOTUS DOMINO does something like this. I want to do this setup with qmail, I am pretty conversant with qmail and have a few installations also. Can this be done? If not, then how can the same be achieved? Please suggest. Regards, Ashok

[OT] fixing the line length

Sometime back we had a discussion (poll?) on "fixing the line length" in our posts. Some, like myself, were of the opinion that the sender should wrap the text at an "appropriate" column, say, 66. Some others were arguing that this scheme only screws up the display. I just discovered this RFC [http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2646.txt] (have I been living in a cave?) that addresses this issue by introducing a new parameter with the text/plain type. It's "format=flowed|fixed". And guess what - Mozilla already supports it, Mutt is introducing it in 1.3, and Pine developers are thinking about it (I might be wrong, but that's what a recent message on the Pine mailing list suggests). I don't know how access floppy drive in linux.We have sun-micro systems in our college.To access floppy drive i went to /home/floppy/ directory, but there r many folders named such as 'unnamed floppy #1,#2 and so on.How to find out the folder that actually refers to floppy drive. And also once i lost the contents of my floppy when i placed it in drive actauly they r over written by some other files. Abstract: -------- It is now an accepted fact that no meaningful research and development in natural language processing, information extraction and machine translation can be carried out without WORDNETS. In India, wordnets are being built for the following languages: Hindi and Marathi at IIT Bombay, Tamil at Anna University Knowledge Based Center Chennai, Gujarathi at MS University Baroda (under the supervision of IIT Bombay), Oriya and Sanskrit at Utkal University Bhubaneswar and Bengali at IIT Kharagpur. The Hindi wordnet- which pioneered all these efforts- is at an advanced stage of development with about 11000 semantically linked synsets and with the associated software and the user interface. The final aim is to construct wordnets for Indian languages, link them internally to produce the INDO-WORDNET and then link the Indo-wordnet with the English wordnet and the Euro-Wordnet (a conglommeration of European language wordnets). This will facilitate automatic translation, multilingual information search and multilingual text processing. The Indo-wordnet project is being spearheaded by IIT Bombay. In the presentation with the above title, we describe the computational and linguistic issues involved in building Indian language wordnets with specific reference to Hindi and Marathi. Synsets are the building blocks of any wordnet, and the basic principles behind construcing the synsets, viz., Minimality, Coverage and Replacability will be discussed. In Indian language computing, verbs pose difficult problems- particularly in the storage structure of the wordnet- due to compounding, causative formation and onomaetopia. Our method of dealing with verbs will be spelt out. Certain semantic relations of the English and the Euro-wordnet have been further refined in the Hindi wordnet structure. Also cross-part of speech semantic relations have been explicitly set up for facilitating word sense disambiguation. We conclude the talk with two important applications of the wordnet- word sense disambiguation and automatic lexicon generation. We have used the verb noun associations to disambiguate the nouns through a semantic cluster formed in the wordnet. As for the second application, the wordnet hierarchy is used to create the disambiguators and the semantic attributes of the words in the document. This facilitates extracting knowledge from the document and automatic translation. I can use all the Blanks you can donate. After all they are for students itself. That apart we are keenly looking forwards towards delivering a talk at Shivaji University on 8th which will include intorduction to fsf-os, First Strides with gnu-linux, knoppix(bootable cd with gnu-linux on it), carreers on gnu-linux, using free software-open source, why does gnu-linux/fsf-os for students make so much sense???. A concrete agenda for the talk is yet to be jotted down, but the above is a small preci of what is to come. Call me and drop in when you are in bombay and we'll meet. Have a nice day Bhaskar. epson 480 printer cartridge

first of all i wud like 2 apologise 2 all of u for having my mail cause so much of flames on the grp. it was only b'coz of incomplete info provided by me. the other mistake that i realized i had made was 2 ask questions directly on the list without trying 2 find the ans myself first. tried 2 take the easy way out. but now that i've realized my mistake, i will try not to commit the mistake again. having apologised, i wud also like 2 make some clarifications: actually the epson 480 color stylus printer comes with a MS windows based utility 2 bring the cartridge holder in the open (from beneath the cover) while changing the cartridge. also after changing the cartridge, the ink in the new cartridge has 2 be charged b4 the printer can start printing. also other utilities provided r nozzle cleaning, head positioning, etc. it is **not** possible 2 open the printer & change the cartridge manually. (so i can't do ne thing even if god has given me 2 hands & a brain) also my printer IS connected to a linux machine (although i also have a windows OS, which i never use (it is there for my brother who uses the comp only 2 play games like NFS, cricket, etc which, unfortunately r not available on the linux platform)) it doesn't make sense 2 switch 2 windows just 2 change the printer cartridge. consider the case of a guy (probably hypothetical) who has the same printer but has only linux on his machine my question is definitely related to GNU/linux & i think that it was not at all out of place when it occured on the mailing list. 2 minor problems after kernel recompilation..

Hi, This is my first post to this mailing list although I have been lurking for a couple of months... I am facing 2 problems with my GNU/Linux box (Redhat 7.2, Kernel 2.4.19) since I installed the 2.4.19 kernel a couple of months ago.. 1) My system does not turn off automatically after issuing the powerdown command.. I have to turn it of manually. Earlier, with the RH 7.2 default kernel (2.4.7-10), the power would switch off automatically. Here are the how the relevant variables are set : CONFIG_PM=y CONFIG_APM=m # CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE=y CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE=y # CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS=y # CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set I got these settings from linuxnewbie.org a couple of months ago. They do not work for me, nor can I explain why they are the way they are. They seem to work for others with a similar problem though. 2) I cannot mount audio cd's anymore. I can play them through gtcd, I just cannot rip them.. The mount command tells me that I got a bad fs type or there are too many mounted filesystems. I can mount normal data cd's easily enough.. Also, what is a good strategy to follow while compiling a kernel? Is it better to make as many modules as possible or the other way round? Are there any particular features which would be better off as part of the kernel image rather than as modules? Currently, I have compiled very few features as modules. Hello All, I m using COMPAQ's DL320 server.'ve installed RHL7.2 with apache1.3.26,php4.2.2,freetds0.53 and Oracle8i. Php4.2.2 is installed for odbc,oracle,mysql,postgres,apache. But server has one problem.When m/c get rebooted after some days uptime,it doesnot bring eth0 up by stating that other host is having same ip. so,i have to change ip in eth0's ifconfig file.then only it comes up on network. so,what cud be the problem??? i think there's something wrong with NIC.bad NIC which doesnot release ip. or some network drivers problem??
