yes. This was covered. 2 minor problems after kernel recompilation..

Hi, This is my first post to this mailing list although I have been lurking for a couple of months... I am facing 2 problems with my GNU/Linux box (Redhat 7.2, Kernel 2.4.19) since I installed the 2.4.19 kernel a couple of months ago.. 1) My system does not turn off automatically after issuing the powerdown command.. I have to turn it of manually. Earlier, with the RH 7.2 default kernel (2.4.7-10), the power would switch off automatically. Here are the how the relevant variables are set : CONFIG_PM=y CONFIG_APM=m # CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE=y CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE=y # CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS=y # CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set I got these settings from linuxnewbie.org a couple of months ago. They do not work for me, nor can I explain why they are the way they are. They seem to work for others with a similar problem though. 2) I cannot mount audio cd's anymore. I can play them through gtcd, I just cannot rip them.. The mount command tells me that I got a bad fs type or there are too many mounted filesystems. I can mount normal data cd's easily enough.. Also, what is a good strategy to follow while compiling a kernel? Is it better to make as many modules as possible or the other way round? Are there any particular features which would be better off as part of the kernel image rather than as modules? Currently, I have compiled very few features as modules. Hi This can be done thru a bandwidth shapping in your router if your router supporting bandwidth shapping module, I think ciscos all above 1700 series supports bandwidth shapping or u can do it thru IPtables in Linux 7.3. But u cant control bandwidth given to a particular user, controls can be done thru services they use. According to services u can allocate the bandwidth, for example u r using SMTP service u can allocate more bandwidth to 25 ports. rgds girish My problem is, how can I control the BANDWIDTH given to a user thru a leased Line at different rates. Redhat garbled text

Greetings, Have any of you found a solution for the garbled text of Redhat 8.0. The ncurses library seems to be the problem - I am not sure though. For those who do not use RH 8.0, the problem is as follows, the display of most of the programs like ntsysv, cenetericq and various others is not aligned properly on the screen, also the screen is not refereshed when some changes are made and some new content is written above the old content on the screen. COMPASS 2003, being organised at the Netaji Indoor Stadium by the Computer Association of Eastern India, will see the congregation of over 100 companies, but it's the presentations by the Linux users group that promises to be riveting fare. "We will use this opportunity to introduce Kolkata to the GNU/Linux and Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS), and demonstrate and educate that they can be a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows and proprietary software," a spokesman of the Linux users group said. Microsoft, on the other hand, says a study has concluded that in the long run, the cost of systems running Linux as operating system would be "considerably higher" than ones running on Microsoft platforms. "This year the fair, being sponsored by Seagate, will be different in that we will have a focussed event for software developers, resellers and service companies," the fair's chairman B. Hari told IANS. "We have new products in hardware, software and services that will be showcased in the four-day event. The fair will hold a special programme for the channels to discuss the challenges in the market place and on policies of large distribution companies," Hari said. ACM Seminar - Game AI Friday, January 24, 2003 - 6:30 p.m. Speaker: Amit Rao Venue: Lecture Theatre, NCST, Juhu Entrance: Free (as in beer) Abstract: Gaming-AI, like any other discipline related to games, evolved away from the strictly academic to a more 'real-time- hack' approach which relies heavily on pre-compiled or hard coded information. This trend has been changing slowly, as more and more processing power is available to the AI module in games. Game-developers have started looking in the direction of academic research and have tried to duplicate their success in fields like graphics, where games are state-of-the-art in terms of algorithms and technologies. In this seminar we discuss some of the initial attempts and problems being faced by developers. We also briefly explore the academic techniques which have been exploited in games and the need for game AI to be different, at least in the near future. About the Speaker: Amit Rao is currently working at NCST as Visiting Software Engineer in the Graphics Division. He is passionate about games in both the player and the programmer sense. He is working on developing a robust game engine for NCST, which is capable of pumping out world class content. His large-scale professional plans have always revolved around games and game design, and so he has a permanent unshakeable belief that this is the right field for him to be in. hello everyone, This is in reponse to the article in the Times of India dt. 20th jan 2003 pg.3 stating that the IIT Mumbai is going to host a 3 day tech. fest. from Jan 31st., and among its events, there includes a lecture by RMS. Introduction: Several months ago, GOBBLES Security was recruited by the RIAA (riaa.org) to invent, create, and finally deploy the future of antipiracy tools. We focused on creating virii/worm hybrids to infect and spread over p2p nets. Until we became RIAA contracters, the best they could do was to passively monitor traffic. Our contributions to the RIAA have given them the power to actively control the majority of hosts using these networks. We focused our research on vulnerabilities in audio and video players. The idea was to come up with holes in various programs, so that we could spread malicious media through the p2p networks, and gain access to the host when the media was viewed. During our research, we auditted and developed our hydra for the following media tools: mplayer (www.mplayerhq.org) WinAMP (www.winamp.com) Windows Media Player (www.microsoft.com) xine (xine.sourceforge.net) mpg123 (www.mpg123.de) xmms (www.xmms.org) After developing robust exploits for each, we presented this first part of our research to the RIAA. They were pleased, and approved us to continue to phase two of the project -- development of the mechanism by which the infection will spread. It took us about a month to develop the complex hydra, and another month to bring it up to the standards of excellence that the RIAA demanded of us. In the end, we submitted them what is perhaps the most sophisticated tool for compromising millions of computers in moments. Our system works by first infecting a single host. It then fingerprints a connecting host on the p2p network via passive traffic analysis, and determines what the best possible method of infection for that host would be. Then, the proper search results are sent back to the "victim" (not the hard-working artists who p2p technology rapes, and the RIAA protects). The user will then (hopefully) download the infected media file off the RIAA server, and later play it on their own machine. When the player is exploited, a few things happen. First, all p2p-serving software on the machine is infected, which will allow it to infect other hosts on the p2p network. Next, all media on the machine is cataloged, and the full list is sent back to the RIAA headquarters (through specially crafted requests over the p2p networks), where it is added to their records and stored until a later time, when it can be used as evidence in criminal proceedings against those criminals who think it's OK to break the law. Our software worked better than even we hoped, and current reports indicate that nearly 95% of all p2p-participating hosts are now infected with the software that we developed for the RIAA. Things to keep in mind: 1) If you participate in illegal file-sharing networks, your computer now belongs to the RIAA. 2) Your BlackIce Defender(tm) firewall will not help you. 3) Snort, RealSecure, Dragon, NFR, and all that other crap cannot detect this attack, or this type of attack. 4) Don't fuck with the RIAA again, scriptkids. 5) We have our own private version of this hydra actively infecting p2p users, and building one giant ddosnet. Due to our NDA with the RIAA, we are unable to give out any other details concerning the technology that we developed for them, or the details on any of the bugs that are exploited in our hydra. However, as a demonstration of how this system works, we're providing the academic security community with a single example exploit, for a mpg123 bug that was found independantly of our work for the RIAA, and is not covered under our agreement with the establishment. Reg. Squid

Hi friends, I have installed Squid on my machine and changed the configurations. I am able to browse from the machine which I had installed squid by seting the browser to the proxy address. However, I am not able to browse from other machines which is connected with network. The message coming on screen is access denied at present for the Url... contact your service provider root. Please advice me what are the settings to be changed in access control part in squid.conf. My network IP are of class C type starting from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254. Regards, Vinod.

I am not so concerned that people raise this question *on* a mailing list. What is worrying however is that this question *is raised* at all by those who are positively disposed to Free/Libre and Open Source Software. Imagine talking about GNU/Linux (or, more often just 'Linux', the term popularised by the media, just like how it has converted the term 'hacker' into something negative) without talking about issues like freedom and the people (and their motivations) who started it all. There are some networks -- in India too -- which would like to pretend as if GNU doesn't exist, Richard Stallman comes out of some fictional book, and that Debian is a fiction of our imagination. Their argument is: we don't want politics. This (the claim of wanting to steer clear of 'politics') is, one could argue, a political stand in itself. By avoiding issues like freedom, just to make this campaign more palatable to business or the mainstream, we are taking a stand which has strong implications for everyone. Any newcomer to GNU/Linux out there wanting to get to know more about RMS, I would recommend reading his biography (Free As In Freedom: Richard Stallman's Crusade for Free Software). I'm not sure how RMS views this biography, because in the journalistic style, it tries to be less hagiographical, and in parts critical of RMS, the person and the leader of the Free Software Movement. Hi all, I was going through the mailing archive of some site and found the queries regarding blocking yahoo and msn messenger using iptable. There is a small script which I have written to block the yahoo,msn and rediff messenger using iptable. ILUG-Bom IRC Channel

mgetty compilation options

How do I find out whether the 'mgetty' binary installed from its rpm is compiled with -DAUTO_PPP or not? Or going further and generalizing, how do I find the flags that were used to compile a binary? I have configured my machine as a dialin server. Currently, mgetty accepts the username and then calls /bin/login to accept and authenticate the password from the peer. But I want pppd to authenticate the peer rather than /bin/login. So mgetty should call pppd rather than /bin/login. The file /etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config has the option for doing this. But a comment in the file says that mgetty has to be compiled with -DAUTO_PPP option for it to work. I suspect that the currently installed mgetty binary isn't compiled with -DAUTO_PPP because even after enabling /AutoPPP/ in login.config, the remote client still gets a bash prompt after authenticating which indicates /bin/login being called. I read the installed mgetty documentation but it doesn't say anything about the AutoPPP option being used while compiling or not. -- Abhir Joshi http://education.vsnl.com/abhir/

So, basically the choice depends on the requirements. You might want to look at the different scripting languages available out there and decide which one to use. my cdrom is giving problems?

i have a samsung 52x cdrom drive, which has recently started giving me problems it used 2 work fine with my previous rhl7.1 installation.now i use rhl7.3. whenever i try 2 use the "eject" option after right clicking the cdrom icon on the desktop, the hdd is accessed for some secs, then the cdrom light glows for some secs, but the cdrom tray doesn't open. the same thing happens even if i try 2 manually eject the cdrom tray by pressing the button below the cdrom tray. i don't seem 2 understand the problem. the cdrom drive is 2 yrs old, & i haven't done ne cd drive cleaning since. is it bcoz of this? also plz throw some light as 2 how do i clean the cdrom drive. -- Pradnyesh Sawant ( The Doubtfire ) Ph: 27703060 B.E.
