Almost all Linux distros out-of-the-box would not work for many and they would not have the skills / patience to learn manual configuring etc to make most of these hardwares work in Linux. Of course we also know that most home users are using pirated softwares which did not cost anything and the only cost incurred by them is for the hardware. So would they throw away their old hardware which is still good enough to work for another 5-10 years. I believe that home users have no other costs except the initial hardware cost and it is not sounding convicing enough that their operating costs or TCO would make enough difference to switch an OS. Floppies / CDs are sufficient to back up all the important data for home users and most would not understand what the fuss is all about even if they are habituated to rebooting their systems 3 times in a day. Keep in mind that most such home users do not keep their systems on for any longer than they actually use it. So uptime and stability remain just irrelevant words. Worms , viruses, firewalls, antivirus software, reboot, BSOD etc are perfectly normal words in home users lexicons but Apt-get, root, privileges, sources, /dev/hda, mount etc are not. So even though we are looking at a superior OS and other applications, it still needs a little more finishing touches to get the whole package ready for everyone's use. Let's help by evangelizing a little more and get atleast one acquaintance interested enough to switch to a dual boot first (hardware permitting). A little emphasis on taking the high moral ground and refusing to use pirated softwares when legal alternatives exist, would be a nice approach with someone who has a sense of wrong and right. Even a switch to OSS alternatives on Windows (OpenOffice.org and Mozilla) as a first step would be a nice way to show off the capabilities of the alternative system. Nasir

IMAP Service and access to external network problem

Dear friends Our Red Hat 8 server is not accepting IMAP connection telnet to port 143 says : "* BYE Service not available edp0.iacc.org IMAP4rev1 2001.315rh at Fri, 3 Jan 2003 18:13:27 +0530 (IST)" I tried by flushing all the iptables rules also. And our local machines on the LAN are not able to connect to the FTP server outside the network, But it can browse the internet using squid proxy. please help me how to solve these problem. Sendmail problem

Hi All I have a registered domain goldenswan.com and using usernames(a)goldenswan.com email addresses. goldenswan's mail server is kept somewhere in USA. My LAN mail server(i.e sendmail) setup permits me to send messages to any address where from address shows username(a)goldenswan.com because I set masquerade as goldenswan.com. It permits me to send messages anyone where messages to usernames(a)goldenswan.com is delivered locally if user exists in /etc/passwd file. It works fine but for any user not existing in /etc/passwd is rejected. I want a message to any user not exists in /etc/passwd should be considered external message and to be sent to goldenswan.com mail server. Help me to solve this problem.

I have contact with an NGO called 'each one teach one' which is working with many BMC schools. We get their help for visiting these schools. Sendmail and blocking spam

Hi! I am trying to block e-mail from certain sites entering out network. The following is the configuration which i did. In /etc/mail/access I have added the following entries erocticmailers.com REJECT "Blocked site" mailheaven.com REJECT "Blocked Site" then I did makemap hash /etc/mail/access < /etc/mail/access Then i restarted sendmail : service sendmail restart But i continue to get e-mails from this domain.Can somebody explain me how do I tackle this errror or is there anything which I have missed? Government establishments can't/don't use pirated software. They have to pay through their noses for it. Free s/w would certainly be a much cheaper alternative, given the fact that most free (as in free speech) s/w is also *free* (as in free beer). Also the s/w can be tailored according to needs. Programming skills are cheap in India. If it's a bug you want to fix, you don't even have to spend on that. Hundreds of programmers out there on the Net who are more than willing to do it for free (speech & beer) :) As long as pirated s/w is around, maybe it isn't practical to expect home users, and other laymen to shift to free s/w (atleast not very easily), even if it's a better alternative. Our apologies for an inadequate representation; we have no excuse other than the general difficulties in garnering information across a virtual sub-continent, largely depending on e-mail. Says Dr Murthy: "Currently, the TeNeT group is involved in the wide scale deployment of Internet kiosks across the countryside. The kiosks require local language software so that they can be effectively used by the marginalised literate population of our country." We are grateful for the explanation below to Dr Murthy: Given the number of Indian languages and different encoding standards and fonts they use, it was felt that we need to develop Indian language support that is essentially independent of encoding and font. Further, we felt that this support must be provided at the kernel/X-Window system levels so that applications that run on top of the kernel/X-Window system inherit the interface. To this end we provide two different solutions under linux: kernel based and X-Window based. Kernel based solution: Indian languages have variable width characters. To support variable width at the kernel level, a multiglyph approach is proposed, i.e. a keystroke may correspond to one or more glyphs. Further, the number of keystrokes possible on the standard QWERTY keyboard is not sufficient to represent all characters and character clusters in any given language. This results in the problem that a sequences of keys may correspond to different glyphs (in that a key sequence ab might correspond to a glyph g1, while a key sequence abc might correspond to a different glyph g2). This requires that the system has a memory of the keystrokes that have been made. To address this problem a finite state machine and a set of associated rules was introduced in the kernel. X-Window based solution: Two different solutions are supported at the X-Window level, namely, glyph based and encoding based. In the first approach, similar to that of the kernel, the parsing is done on the input side, while glyphs are produced on the output side (file/display). In this approach, clearly the system is tied to the font that is used. To overcome this problem, an encoding based solution has also been provided. The problem with this approach is in cursor positioning. The position of the cursor is maintained by the application which interacts with X to obtain the widths of characters. The cursor is positioned based on the keys typed (no memory/context sensitivity is assumed). We are yet to address this problem. We do feel that the only solution available to us is to provide a set of cursor APIs in X which can be used by any application. In either solution, the language dependent information is provided in parse rule tables. This information is loaded at runtime. This ensures that changing the local language environment is simply a question of manipulating parse rule tables. Applications: The solutions that we have provided enable a user to type in a local language in most applications (Open Office/ KOffice/gcc...). We have further customised some of the applications (menus/errors in local languages), namely, KOffice, Konqueror, gcc, pine, emacs. We are currently working on customising Open Office. We are also working on a convertor from fonts to encoding, fonts to fonts, encoding to font. Current Support: Tamil (Glyph-based) - TamilNet99, Inscript Hindi (Glyph-based) - Inscript Tamil (Encoding-based) - ISCII Hindi (Encoding-based) - ISCII The above supports are complete. (This simply means that we have populated the appropriate language dependent parse rule files). We are currently working on Malayalam, Oriya, Marathi and Gujarathi. Future Plans: This work is part of a major plan to develop a multimodal interface to the computer. By multimodal, we mean, handwriting, keyboard and speech interfaces. We have started work on both handwriting and speech. We have developed a handwriting interface for Tamil and have developed speech technology software for: speech synthesis in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam (Malayalam database was obtained from ISDL, Trivandrum); spoken language identification, syllable-based recognition of continuous speech, speaker identification. X Server installation issue on RedHat 7.2 for ProSavageDDR video controller.

Hi, I am trying to install RH 7.2 on a VIA motherboard having ProSavageDDR (Mfg. by S3) video controller. The installation options for X server configuration does not list out and specific X server for the above chipset, hence I am forced to use the Generic Savage server. But when I try to test the server during configuration, it gives a blank screen. The monitor I am using is Samtron 753s, which is again not listed in the default hardware list. I've tried using different color depths & screen resolutions, but still the blank screen. The rest of the installation goes smoothly. I am trying to set up a graphical login. Post installation, when I try to start linux, the X server fails to start. I keep getting the error message, X server failed to start, no screens found. I suspect, it is the video driver issue, and there is a specific driver for the above vid controller available on the net. My issue is, being a newbie, how can I install this driver and/or install the X server. My RH7.2 install comes with XFree86 X server, version 4.1.0. Any help on this issue would be appreciated. killing dead processes

more module loading problems at startup

Hello all, I have a problem. I have updated (recompiled and installed) kernel to 2.4.20. It runs perfectly but for one thing: the modules I have compiled to load cannot be found, not during booting and also not by YAST. Fortunately there seems to be only one which I am trying to load and which can no longer be loaded and that is the sound driver. On attempting to use YAST to reinstall it, YAST cannot find the appropriate driver. I have done the following make oldconfig (with xconfig) make dep make clean make bzImage make modules make module_install cp bzImage /boot/vmlinuz cp System.map /boot dirctory (Actually Suse distribution uses System.map-2.4.19-4GB so tried System.map, System.map-2.4.20 and even copying System.map of the new kernel to System.map-2.4.19-GB). nothing helps. Then I even did mkinitrd which did help on the loading of the reiserfs but that problem I had already solved earlier by compiling the reiserfs into the kernel. How to check whether ppp0 is active

Hi friends, When I connect to net through a modem, I can check whether ppp0 is active or not using ifconfig command so that it will list the status of ppp0. My problem is I had set a command in crontab as follows. lynx -dump www.lcnet.com/update.php (A module to update the web mysql database) Above script has to work and update only if ppp0 is active. How can I check whether ppp0 is active (A script has to check and then if the status is true, update.php module has to execute). Please suggest me how to go about. I had put six to seven commands in a batch file and the batch file name is given in crontab. I am using wvdialer to connect to net and it redials if connection disconnect. and if I specify the dialing command "wvdial redial" in the batchfile, then the subsequent command in the batch file are not executing. Hello, I use a P4 based machine running SuSE Linux 8.0. I have a 20 GB Hard Disk & 256 MB RDRAM. At the time of installation, I reserved around 500 MB space for the /swap directory. As intended, it should share memory with the Linux Swap space. The problem is that, when I issue the top command, it shows that used swap space is zero & my Physical Memory is 70% used. I think it's pretty high since I don't use any software which is heavy on system requirments. I tried the swapon command but in vain. Even eding the /etc/fstab file didn't help. Hello, I want to setup a Central Server in my School [suppose] & connect Terminals via serial lines so that every user can log into & use only one copy of the OS installed in the Central Server but I don't realy know how to implement it. Hello, Earlier, I mounted 3.5" floppies by just giving the command # mount /dev/fd0 /floppy Now suddenly, I don't know what happened, the bash shell says the device file is missing. As an alternative, what I did is that I changed the entry in /etc/fstab & named the floppy device file to /dev/fd0H1440. Now I mount floppies by using the command # mount /dev/fd0H1440 /floppy Although it works perfectly okay, I am still intrigued by what happened. Hello All Well I am sad to write this from a win98 machine bcaz of stupid command -> "dd if=111.bin of=/dev/hda2 bs=1440 count=1" from root on RH 7.1 Actually /dev/hda2 was where / got mounted everytime..but now this command has caused inode table to get corrupted on /dev/hda2 (may be bcaz i replaced usual bs=512 to bs=1440 and so its written to unwanted space cauing damage to i-node tables).. now i can't go beyond kernel panic screen on RH 7.1 So Can i get back my data in /dev/hda2 ???How? Where is the firewall?

Hi! installed privoxy ( junkbuster clone ) ad filter. However it cannot bind to the default 8118 port. It complains that the port may be in use and exits. When i run #nmap localhost there is no 8118 port open I guess the problem is with the firewall settings. Where are these settings located? Is it the problem of firewall or something else ? Hi, I have installed "Full (all packages)" Mandrake 9.0, I want to install flash player for any of the browsers - Mozilla, konquorer or galeon. I have given Mozilla a try with flash as follows. I did download and extract the files, and also copied into $HOME/.netscape/plugins and also added application/x-shockware-flash in the preferences->Navigator->Helper Application used swf (not .swf) as the extension. But mozilla doesnt even ask me if it can download the plugin for flash. Bye.

Ofcourse except "mv UPPERCASE lowercase" since there are lots of files to convert and I do not want to keep typing the lowercase file name for each one of them. Thanks in advance. Bye.

Hello, i have red hat linux 7.3 running at my place. i got gcc 2.96 installed by default on my system. while installing an application, it told me to upgrade gcc. so i installed gcc 3.2. it works fine. while installing my internal modem, it told me "gcc not found" so i did "locate gcc" in the process i found a lot many "*gcc2.96.*.so" files in the /usr/lib dir. i removed all of them then i did "cleanlinks" after that my x server is not starting. i tried installing gcc 3.2 again, but it did not help. plz help urgently, as i am not able 2 do my usual stuff, & have 2 use the crappy windoze instead. ne help wud b greately appreciated. -- Best regards, Pradnyesh mailto:pradnyesh@gmx.net

Squid & MTNL

I have both MTNL and VSNL nameservers in resolv.conf However when I connect using MTNL squid gives error that the nameserver refuses to perform specified action However if I disable proxy I can access the net. Also if I connect using VSNL I do not get this error using squid. Is this the problem of MTNL nameserver or squid? Nikhil
