I dont think any standard would say to have 'page not found'(no page) as first page. My suggestion would be to have list of mailings lists on front page, because I wanted to change my preferences of list, and to find link to change it, I had go to my trash and open one of the emails after finding 'page not found' on mm.ilug-bom.org.in. An Interesting Question

Hello Luggers! I will play the Devil's Advocate here. Consider, for a moment, that the folloing *HYPOTHETICAL* situation is true. Microsoft Corp. has been losing market value rapidly(but it still is the number 1 software company) due to the advancement a much more "stable" and "secure" operating system called GNU/Linux. Since the GNU/Linux operating system, licensed under the GPL is completely open source, *anybody* is allowed to *see* the code. Lets say that Microsoft, to stay at the top, employs a few developers who are skilled at both GNU/Linux and Windows. Microsoft, then asks them to write a clone of the linux kernel for incorporating large chunks of it, maybe even the kernel in its entirety, into the next version of windows. Since M$ is the still the leader, they have the highest market share. Now if almost everybody switches to the new version of windows(based on the linux kernel), they will be in for a pleasant surprise. They will now get a much more stable and secure OS, which unknown to them, is running a replica of the linux kernel. This new OS will please major IT companies, using M$, too, as they will not have scratch their heads over switching to a more stable operating environment. This will mean an increasing demand for the now, stable and secure, OS from Microsoft. Since all patches applied to OSS are open too, M$ can easily incorporate those into windows update. M$ in the meanwhile, does NOT disclose to *anyone* the ingredients of the new OS. Thus M$ keeps making more money, and its market grows, thereby condemning GNU/Linux to realms of geeks, where it had its humble beginnings. Since M$ does not disclose source code, there is no way for others(Read GNU/Linux supporters) to make a claim that the new Windows is a rip off of the Linux kernel. My question is, (discounting the ethical and moral concerns as these cant be counted as legal arguments and assuming that M$ pays enough $$ to the developers to keep their mouth shut) what contract/law/clause/license/etc is there right now to prevent M$ from doing something as dastardly as this? In fact, Microsoft, whose software you will perhaps agree is a standard, are promoting XML as an internet standard. Nevertheless, using the Simputer's SDK, programs can also be written in C, which is a current standard. Also, J2ME is now available on the Simputer, and J2ME, you will hopefully agree, is yet another current standard. The interfaces that the Simputer uses, such as USBn audio, IrDA, and V.90 modem, are also current standards. You then say, "by teaching an illiterate nomad how to use a computer that only other illiterate nomads use, they are not helping to bridge that digital divide," and "How can anyone honestly expect developing nations to ever help themselves if the Simputer doesn't actually teach them how the rest of the world really works?" It is rather presumptuous to think that the Simputer is only aimed at the illiterate, and further that all illiterates are nomads. What the Simputer does do, is to enable even illiterates, and yes, even the nomads among them, to use information technology as a tool to do things that matter to them, including accessing the internet for information at least in their own language, which the Simputer speaks to them using its built-in local-language text-to-speech facility. Admittedly, since they may not know English which you probably consider the only standard language, the Simputer may not just yet be able to teach them everything about how the rest of the world works, as some of that information content may not currently be available in their local language. But I dare say that there is a lot of material already available in many non-English local languages, in India as well as in other developing countries, which is still accessible to them. This we consider a good first step in bridging the digital divide. Besides, aren't use of handheld devices and internet access part of "how the rest of the world works?" By the way, hunt and peck is also how many in the "rest of the world" work, but I dare say that the illiterate nomads touching pictorial icons is hardly hunt-and-peck. In any case, a not-too-distant version of the Simputer will allow these illiterate nomads to use spoken commands in their own language, obviating the need for hunt-and-peck. As for illiterate nomads interacting with other illiterate nomads, aren't most of the interactions that any individual has, anywhere in the world, with other individuals in their local area(s)? Local here could mean a village, town, city, state, or even country. For that matter, it doesn't seem like you yourself cared to interact with the developers of the Simputer, half way around the world, to learn the facts about it, before jumping to your own ill-judged conclusions, so why should you expect the illiterate nomads to not derive any value by interacting with other illiterate nomads? Now, let's talk about applications. True, users must wait for someone to develop a specialized application and distribute it before they can enjoy the Simputer. But this is also true of any other standard handheld device if anyone in the developed world too needs an application that is outside the standard suite of PIM applications. Yes, a lot of specialized application software is available on many web sites for the standard handheld devices currently available in the market, but didn't users of such devices have to wait when such devices initially appeared, to have them written by some developer(s) ? Why should the Simputer be any different? In fact, there is already an army of independent developers, worldwide, which is creating many innovative applications on the Simputer, for bridging the digital divide, that have real meaning to the lives of those illiterate nomads as well as their literate counterparts in the cities and towns in the developing and developed worlds. One example is a Simputer-based ultrasound device to help government health workers monitor the health of mother and foetus among the aboriginal women in the remote villages of Africa where there is no electricity available for using standard ultrasound diagnostic equipment used in urban-area clinics or hospitals. That is bridging the digital divide, by passing on the benefits of modern digital technology to poor tribals in caring for their health. You finally say, "the most glaringly obvious problem of the Simputer is trumpeted as one of its greatest qualities: portability," as such portability would make the Simputer vulnerable to easy theft. No one can deny that the human temptation to steal exists among all peoples of the world, whether they live in developed countries or the developing ones. Why else would computer stores everywhere, including the developed world, do brisk business in those lockable tethers which they also use in-store, attached to laptops and handheld devices on display? The real point that you seem to have missed, is that by virtue of the smart-card facility, the Simputer can be shared among a group of persons who can't individually afford even the low $200 price, while still retaining the privacy of their data and other information. And because of such shared ownership, there will be greater care exercised to prevent theft(s). The same would be true of even Simputers which are placed in a village, say, by the government or even by "progressives" from the West, which, being community property, will be jealously guarded by the community! As for the Simputers that would be in a cyber-cafe-like Simputer Cafe in the village, the owner of the Cafe will have adequate preventive measures instituted against theft. All this does not mean that theft will be totally impossible, but it also doesn't mean that because of the likelihood of theft owing to its portability, the Simputer is not suited for use by those poor villagers. For that matter, the same poor villagers possess small, easy-to-carry or -pocket items such as traditional jewellery, farm implements, utensils, etc., which do once in a while get stolen, but which they do normally know how to protect from theft, so why should the Simputer be any different? I am afraid you do need to educate yourself, Scott. hi, M$ has only fooled few people. It's only that thoose who have been conned do not know that have been conned. A strategy like this is very difficult/impossible due to the architectural differences between windows and linux. BTW do you think that Bill Gate's/M$'s ego will let him do that? or is money more important than the ego?? Redhat Plans to conquer the desktop??

Thankfully though they have no plans to replace Redmond with redhat http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/27289.html Also there is an article in the Times that LG is planning to sell PCs preloaded with Linux. Hi Yes it prints n! and is pretty good at doing that(large precision) I commented out the #include<stdio.h> and ran the preprocessor on the original file. Then i ran indent on the result to give it a decent look. Then i changed all the variables to more meaningful ones. The thirteenth line looks something like this for (l = 0; l < 14; putchar ("\t\"8)>l\"9!.)>vl"[l] ^ 'L'), ++l); It is supposed to print something like "Enter number: " The perplexing part is the putchar() in the loop Taking a close look at it you can see that he has a 14 character striing in the quotes "\t\"8)>l\"9!.)>vl" .This he indexes by [l]. While the loop executes he extracts each character systematically and does an bitwise exclusive OR with 'L' and prints the resulting character.This prints the string. Now the question why does he do an XOR with 'L' is easy. He could have done an XOR with nethin for the matter but then the string in quotes would have been different. hi i did go thru the confusy contest. the code i wrote was not as confusing as the one just posted on the LUG (wish i had checked mail earlier). i used names like pepsi coke sprite, burger, pizza etc etc by #defines for printf scanf etc etc . even used mullllllllllllllllltiple function jumps to just do simple things. It was real FUN... results will comeout tomm let see. i think i messed up in the debugging round... gurpreet

i need suggestion from u, theres some configuration problem i h've setup linux 7.3 Redhat with iptables firewall, n squid proxy server now i want to configure sendmail as a mail server for internal lan user the requirement is users from lan should able to send mails through windows machine with the help of outlook express, i already have a pop3 address for receiving mails from internet for example xyz.com, so receiving is not a problem but i need to configure my gateway such a way that user from lan (windows 98 / 2000 + outlook express installed ) should able to send mails to anyone from outlook express through gatway. pls tell me abt this from scratch that how should i setup sendmail to do this task, i dont h've any registered domain name i h've 64 kbps leased line with static ip n isp dns if i use mail programme on gateway to send mails to xyz(a)yahoo.com it works now i want same thing should happen from client machine i h've done SNAT on some machines Thanx Satsonic

installing linux from hdd

i have a linux 7.1 installed along windows managed by lilo while upgrading to rh7.3 the cdrom cudnt live upto it and stops reading midway. this messed up my earlier installation. i got rh7.3 cds dumped on my hdd e:\rh73 (which is /dev/hda6 iguess) tree is soemthing like this e:\rh73 -> images -> dosutils -> RedHat -> RPMS -> base etc i started the installation from command prompt using autoboot.bat a part of dosutils now installation starts and asks me to select partition and then enter directory names. i have tried every possible dir names and partition name plz tell me how to identify / specify directory names holding installation files.. take care harsh

He's available for consulting contracts, or even a full-time job. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ MORE FROM CHERLIN: This is the factual position, as he desscribes it -- "India has 18 official languages written in 10 different alphabets: Devanagari (used for Hindi, Marathi, and others), Bengali, Gurmukhi (Punjabi), Gujarati, Oriya, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Latin (English). In addition, more than 800 other languages spoken in India do not have official status. Mandrake Linux, one popular distribution, includes keyboards and fonts for Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, and Tamil, five of the nine Indic writing systems. Unfortunately, many applications do not accept these characters, and those that accept them may not handle them correctly." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WHAT'S THE REAL DIFFICULTY?: Edward Cherlin of Web for Humans, an international Web development company based in Cupertino, California, says, "The problems of rendering each standard Indic script are reasonably well understood, and will be solved soon in Pango. The real difficulty is with languages that have never been written, or are written in non-standard variants of the official scripts. The only organization I know of that has been working seriously on this problem is Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), and their work is stalled for lack of funds." Cherlin is active in Unicode, L18nux, Pango, Free Standards Group, and other organizations working on Indic and other unsupported writing systems, especially on the problem of getting all of the interested parties into contact with each other. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ NOTE, SOMETHING ABOUT PANGO AND LI18NUX: Owen Taylor <otaylor(a)redhat.com> is the founder of the Pango project. Li18nux is working on standards for keyboard input, among other things, in conjunction with the Linux Standard Base of the Free Standards Group. They have focused first on Input Methods for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, but when Pango's Indic support is complete they will extend their standard to include it. At the toolkit level, Gtk and Qt are the most used toolkits. This helps. Gtk already has a good framework through Pango project, and basic level support for Indian languages. Qt also now has Unicode level support for all languages, but rendering is not yet ready. However, Pango is independent of Gtk, and can be used with Qt or any other software. GNU, Li18nux and Pango are focusing on Opentype, which is the only font format that provides the glyph mapping tables needed to support Indic conjuncts. GOTE, the GNU OpenType Editor, will be the essential tool for this effort when it is completed. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WinXP AND APPLE: Cherlin explains other issues too. As he puts it: "Some argue today that only Microsoft's WinXP has any kind of Indian language support worth speaking about, even though Apple has provided Indian language kits for many years. "There is confusion about Unicode support for Indic writing systems, since Unicode does not provide character codes for conjunct glyphs. Many in India still think that this is a design flaw in Unicode, whereas the Unicode designers argue that it is a necessary design decision so that we can escape from the current broken Indic rendering techniques. "The set of conjuncts is needed is not determined solely by the writing system and language. It is font-specific, and can therefore only be supported by font glyphs, not character encoding. Unfortunately, PostScript and TrueType fonts do not support the correct mapping tables, and the problem can only be solved with Opentype fonts. "In contrast, rendering Indic scripts using PostScript or TrueType fonts requires encoding the conjuncts directly in the text stream, rather than the letters composing them, and requires non-standard software to translate between the sequence of letters from the keyboard and the sequence of conjunct characters in a non-standard font. The result is text that cannot be sorted and searched properly, where spelling and grammar checkers cannot operate. It is hard on users to have to wait so long for proper support of Indic scripts through Unicode, but the results are guaranteed to justify the delay." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ TEX USERS' CONTRIBUTION: Indian TeX Users Group have a project now to fund font designers in all the Indian languages who are ready to write fonts and donate under GPL to TUGIndia. They've thus secured 'Keli' a Malayalam font family in various weights and shapes written by Hashim and released under GPL. "We do hope to get more fonts in other languages to fill up the gaps. We hope to use the savings generated with TUG2002 (to be held in India in September 2002) exclusively for this purpose," says Radhakrishnan in Thiruvananthapuram. Maybe these friends should get in touch with Pango and Li18nux. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ UNITYPE GLOBAL OFFICE, AN ADD-ON TO MS-OFFICE: Cherlin suggests, for those who can afford it, Unitype Global Office, an add-on to Microsoft Office which supports Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, Tamil, Telugu, Maldivian, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Pashto, Dari, and many other languages. Although it uses non-Unicode encoded fonts and a non-standard rendering engine, Global Office and Microsoft Office together are capable of writing Unicode files that can be viewed correctly with Opentype Indic fonts when they become available. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HARDLY ANY GPL-ed: SIL's Fonts in Cyberspace pages at http://www.sil.org/computing/fonts/ and Alan Wood's Unicode Resources at http://www.hclrss.demon.co.uk/unicode/fontsbyrange.html both list fonts for every major writing system, but hardly any are GPL-ed. This is about to change, according to Cherlin. "Several projects and numerous individuals are working on Free Unicode fonts, now that commercial Opentype font editors such as Tiro Typeworks Fontlab 4.0 are available. Microsoft vs. Government of Peru

Edgar Villanueva, a legislator from Peru, has put a proposal for Peru government agencies to standardize on Free Software for their own internal use. This proposal worries Microsoft! Some government bodies around the world, e.g. in California and Peru, have adopted an aggressive attitude towards restricting the use of proprietary(read Microsoft) software and favouring open source. Open source appeals to government bodies because of its high functionality, very low cost and easy compliance with licensing laws. Of course, Microsoft will try to persuade governments to avoid open source software. They realize that , when governments choose Microsoft as their foundation they are likely to select the whole suite of products to go with it rather than fight incompatibilities. In July 2002 the UK Government also announced a new policy on the use of open source software which favors a pragmatic approach. Back to the Peru case: Villanuevas point is that: Everybody has to deal with the government. If a government uses Microsoft software, its citizens will probably have to use the same software to communicate with it. A government web site that only supports Microsoft Internet Explorer would lock citizens into that Microsoft product. In contrast, government sites using open standards and avoiding patented software would allow citizens to choose between many different kinds of software to access the site. Free Software, also called Open Source, is itself a kind of open standard - its source code is its own reference. Developers of proprietary software can use that reference to create interoperating programs, without infringing on the actual Open Source code. Thus, when a government uses Open Source, it assures its citizens a choice to purchase both proprietary and Open Source software for communicating with their government. The people's choice will be based on factors like functionality, quality, and convenience, rather than on customer lock-in. Hi All, Normal installation of RHL 7.2. Everything working fine. POP access from outlook fine. Browsing fine. SMTP access...krrrrrr...here is the porblem. when i send a small sized mail using the Linux SMTP, it goes. but the mails larger than 40-50 KB refuse.(i have allowed 5MB in sendmail!!).Amazingly i sent a mail sized 700 KB thru the same SMTP via internet. SOund Server Installation

Hi Luggerz! I installed Slackware 8.1 on my machine today and its unable to detect my sound card on system startup. I have a suspicion that the kernel on my pc was not the the one compiled with sound card support. However, i am not quite sure. My sound server is arts(under KDE) and as soon as i start KDE i get an error saying /dev/dsp could not be detected. Any solutions? -- Bhargav Bhatt.

As an aside, I dont think you require the boot partition with the newer versions of Lilo do you? If you dont then you could just use the /boot partition for DOS. !

Red Flag Linux... national pride... more reliable... cheaper... these are some of the keywords emerging from BBC TV ClickOnline's current program which focuses on GNU/Linux in China, apart from other issues. It was telecast on Saturday 21 Sept at 1200 IST (and next coming up on Sunday 22 Sept at 1600 IST and Tues 24 Sept at 1300 IST). An interesting programme, though as is typical of television, it only skims the surface of the issue. (You've guessed my biases when it comes to reading, radio and TV) "If you haven't heard of Linux, it does the same things as Windows. But unlike Windows (its code is freely available)." That's approximately how BBC introduces GNU/Linux. Many Free/Libre and Open Source Software enthusiasts might cringe to hear their favourite OS being compared to Windoze. But the programme makes the point that there are many reasons for a growing number (even if still a small segment of total computer users) opting for GNU/Linux in China. It's cheaper, more reliable, there are questions of national pride (building software indigenously), China's strategy of adopting and adapting, security flaws, and even suspicion of secret backdoors in closed-source proprietory software.... Perhaps the progamme could have mentioned that the international journal of the Free Software Foundation is today published from China... If interested, contact hongfeng(a)gnu.org This programme also has an interesting debate on the usual question: can China compete with Indian software... Do we have to see everything in terms of competition? Louisa Liu agrees that this needn't be so. On an offtopic subject, one learnt of a very interesting plan to teach Internet and computing to the elderly -- the oldest student being 85. Maybe we too could think of similar approaches. Why not? Now the following method I propose is fraught with danger :D, but I have split a FAT partition with it once. Hopefully it will work on a ext[2/3] partition. But you simply *MUST* backup important files. It is really simple actually. #1. Make sure you have the latest stable release of fdisk. #2. Defrag the HDD (I used the norton scandisk as the partition I split was a dos one) #3. Delete the BIG partition #4. First recreate the partition you deleted - but without the bottom few cylinders required for the Dos partition. #5. Then create the Dos partition. Also, you can do ASM/DOS with a ~5-10Mb partition. So you may consider splitting your /boot or swap partitions if they have the space to spare. hth, quasi
