C Programming and Vi

hi! I'm trying to adapt to C-Progamming in Linux (We have our B.E. project on Neural Networks and we are supposed to write the c programs in Linux) I find the Vi features set cindent and syntax on very helpful. After writing the program I have to press ctrl-z ,run gcc ,check the errors , fg This is very annoying.I would like to compile the program in vi itself, see the errors,go to the line causing the error,and then if the compile is succsessful run the program. Is this possible ? (I guess this is possible with some tinkering with .vimrc) Can anyone please post his .vimrc Are there any good ide's exclusively for character mode ? I checked out freshmeat but did not find any good ide (I've used Anjuta but I would like console based ide) Please help -- Nikhil Joshi

[Announce] country codes and state list

I have compiled a list of country codes (from iso3166) and state/region/province lists for as many countries as I could find, alongwith whether they are states, regions or provinces. These have been useful to me in the past, and I figure that they'll be useful to others too. That, and I don't feel like making backups. So, go ahead and download it and make local copies, it's available at http://db.ilug-bom.org.in/lug-authors/philip/ If you think you have some updates to provide, mail them in and I'll be happy to include them after verification. I believe the CIA has a more comprehensive list than I do, but then I don't have the resources that they do. Also, not sure if using their info is allowed. Advice? Philip PS: how many people think that this would be good as a sourceforge project. Not just the lists, but also sample code in a variety of languages to use these lists in your application. servers hang mysteriously

Hi, We have a Compaq Proliant ML350 with two 1G P4's and hardware RAID. It's running RHL 7.3 with the general services services enabled. Only exception is that qmail and tinydns have replaced the original counterparts. A bare installation of X is present, just enough provide libraries that allow users to remotely view postscript files. Now the problem is that the server hangs intermittently, for no apparent reason. The keyboard stops responding, the monitor goes blank and it does not respond to ping packets. We had heard of a kernel bug in RHL 7.3 which causes SMP machines with ext3 to panic. But the hang-ups continue even after upgrading to kernel-smp-2.4.18-10 from redhat.com We suspect a hardware problem since an identical machine is working fine with the same setup. Only difference is that this second machine does not have active users yet. But where do I start looking to rule out any config problems, bad software, careless users etc? The logs never get written, since we have to reset the machine ... hi luggerz We have an institution where the computers and IT deptt is new and there is a lot of enthusiasm pertaining to linux among the staff. We have a spl linux lab set up. But the prob is that linux is new to everyone. there are a few ppl like us who have attended seminars but we still are learning. i would like to sugggest that some of u plz visit us and hold a seminar for linux. Trever & Dr. Nag held one such seminar in the feb wherein we were introduced to linux and the i-lug bom. but very few ppl attended that since it was organized by the automobile deptt. Now we have around 200 students who have a whole linux lab to their disposal but dont know what to do with it. I ensure a much better response this time... adding to this, we have a college closeby in a similar situation and we can organise a seminar there too. two engg colleges in one shot... this was painting a very rosy picture... the downer is that the college is at abt 7 hrs journey from mumbai, but in feb trevor n dr nag were here :) what do u guiys think Gurpreet

X server crash

Hi, A friend of mine was trying to install a screen saver on his Red Hat 7.2 linux box when X crashed. He replaced his XF86Config-4 file with the original. He is still getting an error: Could not init font path unix/:7100, removing from list! Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed' Can you suggest what steps he should take to recover from the X server crash? Thanks. Parul

Neighbour table overflow

hi linuxers, I am doing natting using ipchains on linux box. the problem i that i am continuosly getting error messages like " Neighbour table overflow " on /var/log/messages. It seems that my arp table is getting overflowed due to the load. I tried the man page of arp command and there is no option to directly delete all the enteries of the arp table. Flush Qmail queue?

I needed some help with the qmail setup in a firm I have just joined. The server is the gateway for an office intranet with qmail as MTA. Internal mail works fine, but since the linux box is on dial up, the outgoing messages are queued up. the server auto-dials ( using wvdial ) every half-hour and fetchmail is executed (in ip-up.local). The problem is that some times the qmail queue does not get cleared and some emails are never sent. daemontools are not installed.The qmail daemon is started using the csh -cf method. I looked up qmail.org and tried the recommended kill -TERM <qmail-send pid> but does not seem to work. Does anyone know why this happens? And is there any method by which I can manually flush the queue and send all the messages instantly? If there is any more info needed, pls let me know. FETCHMAIL Problem

Hi All, Can anyone help me out with the following situation? A littile bigger mail, sorry! but can't help!! The Scenario: My mail server is in US of A. I have two locations here in Mumbai Have two multi-drop mailboxes for each location on the US server. Two locations have local linux mail servers, which fetches their respective multi-drop mailboxes from US server and distribute locally. The domain at US server: domainname.com The domain for the server at first location: domainname.com The domain for the server at first location: domainname.com (the same, this is done so that the local mails will be distributed locally.) The mails are delivered using virtusertable. the mails for the users at other location are forwarde to the US server using www.domainname.com (www is specified in the local DNS as the ip of US serever (using @domainname:%1@www.domainname.com) The mails at both the locations are fetched using fetchmail. The Problem: When the mails at one location r fetched having the following header: To: user_at_location1(a)domainname.com, user_at_location2(a)domainname.com (no problem of the TO: has all users for the same location ) The mail for first user is dropped locally, while fetchmail is delivering a mail to second user also, which with the help of virtusertable is sent again to the US server (P.S.: user two already has received his copy of mail) Sometimes the mails r roaming in the following manner. location1 <-> US_Server <-> location2 <-> US_Server <-> location1 I know this is a fetchmail problem, that to cos of the multidrop mailbox, but can't help myself, can anyone?? Hi, Forget to ask you one, How can we give user specific permission for any directory for example, Let's say that we have 3 more users ( a, b, c ) other than root & we have two dir - dirA & dirB I want to allow the users a & b to use (rwx) the dir - dirA user b should use (rwx) both the dir - dirA & dir B user c should not be able to use any of the dir root can use ofcource all the directories. hi there, to mount a windows partition in linux first see the partition name that is hda1 etc. You will get that by doing /sbin/fdisk hda(sda for scsi) then type p which will show ur partition listing see which is ur windows partition. after u get ur windows partition make a folder in linux say cdrive in / or /mnt and then type mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/cdrive it is assumed that windows is in hda1 and u shld be root to do this. hope this helps. regards, funky. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? [OT] rules in packet filters

Hi, I am looking for typical rules, preferably lots of them, used in packet filters. I thought ISP's would be a good source of such info, so posting here with the hope that someone can help me out. Possible applications include rules for firewalls, differential quality of service, traffic billing etc. If someone can provide examples of these, please mail me off the list. Any format will do, as long as there is a format. I'll take the efforts to translate them into a form useful to me. I need this for testing a prototype "reconfigurable" packet classifier that I am working on. mailman problems

Hi, The qrunner script in mailman started throwing up errors on our local server; copying an entry from the logs that repeats every minute when qrunner is invoked by cron. The mailing lists had been working fine until Aug 19 3:38pm, when this problem appeared in the logs. Since then, a lot of messages are queuing up on the various lists ... please help! Postgresql using C api

Hi Guys, code : accessing postgresql databases using C. Library used: libpq-fe.h I am trying to change the notice processor of the C program so that all errors and notices are caught in the notice.txt file. The SQL error is deliberate to generate an error. But the program just does'nt work, or probably the syntax usage is wrong. I have tried all permutations and combinations, except the right one ;) It is a major goof up of pointers. I have attached the program, please help. Thanx Goldwyn :o)

hi gurpeet, If u want to use windows as ur gateway to the internet then either ur windows machine shld be running 2000 server which has the feature of internet sharing so u just have to put the win mac's ip as the gateway on ur linux machine (/etc/sysconfig/network) or if u are running win 98 or something u will have to put a proxy server in ur win mac, not all proxies would be working. try winproxy. hope this helps. regards, funky. hi can somebody guide me on this situation. have a netwrok which will be used for internet purposes like ones in the netcafe(setting the gateway n stuff). what i wanna know is that if the machine having the modem is running windows, can i run Linux on my machine and still get access to the net thru the server?? how to set the gateway in linux?? multiple mail servers over wan links

Hi!, I would like to set up a linux based mail servers (multiple) server per remote location so it would not choke the wan link any clues in this direction which would be easiest setup for this ?? i.e. if a remote user(a)remote.comp.com sends email to user2(a)remote.comp.com is should not be routed through comp.com but the local remote server should route it. what would be the network structure domainwise how should I assign names ?? and dns setup ??
