But I would expect you to pay me "gurudakshina" and other issues -- unfortunately, the fallout of open source. I will try to get accomodation at nominal student rate and food at my home ay most. I can't afford anything else at this point of time. *Of course _lots_ of conditions (behavorial, financial, etc, etc,) apply. Trust has to be deined openly. Somebody has to value my knowledge and provide sufficient funds to pay the bills. About me: I have three years Experiece in digital and analog experience in Industrial electorincs followed by almost 27 years in core and captive IT industry -- For profit and non Profit -- (Core -- revenue streams purely through employment in organisations whose revenues are purely IT based; Captive: Organisations whose revenue stram is NOT IT based -- manufacturing, Construction, Retailers, Educational instirutions etc.) I have sorta fathered, mothered and nurtured and still nurturing may infratructures which have had a longevity of of about 13 years of production use with batrely 5% of carrying cost of the original cost Per Annum. I was asked to 'suggest a laptop' , obviously I am looking for GNU/Linux friendly device. The cost is no factor . Any laptop which is a bit light ( unlike the bulky dell's) and works great . It need not be an gaming machine but should pack a punch ( as per the recent times) . It would be nice if details on 'servicing' are added . an example machine would be : one which can run "compiz 3d + blender+ VLC+ FF(10 tabs one with gmail :P ) + OO" all at the same time :D Regards, Pavithran

Do you think it is primarily motivated by national security concerns, or by a desire to snoop on citizens? Do we have enough safeguards to ensure that this government intrusion would not be a tool for political vendetta or corruption? And lastly, what can we do about it? Comment.

grub error 21 in ubuntu 10.04

How can booting problem be resolved in ubuntu 10.04 which uses grub2? I tried solving it using supergrub disk on a usb device but sgd was not able to write to the mbr correctly and the error continued.Had to always plugin the sgd usb to bootup and manually select the options to boot each time. I believe menu.lst is not available for ubuntu10.04 as it uses grub2 which uses a dynamically generated grub.conf file under /boot/grub --otherwise menu.lst could be edited and the problem solved Since i am using a dell laptop the 3rd option of changing the detection mode of the HDD under bios setup is not possible. The detection option is not present in the bios and the hdd specs seem to be written permanently into the bios firmware. I had to install ubuntu9.04 on another partition to create a newer grub menu. Then after manually logging in to ubuntu 10.04 i had to edit the configuration file of the grub menu of the 9.04 partition --ie. /boot/grub/menu.lst to resolve the issue of booting automatically using the latest updated kernel. So is there any better way to resolve error 21 in ubuntu10.04? The earlier ubuntu installation disks had some options for creating a bootable disk if the grub bootloader was overwritten by windows or some other fault. Both 9.04 and 10.04 installation CDs do not have that rescue option now. TIA Kussh

OT - MTNL Triband Security - undocumented procedure

HI Everyone, I had installed a new wireless + ADSL router on my MTNL Triband line. It was not working since i installed it the log kept saying "username or password failed" The same user name and password was working on my existing dlink adsl router and all settings were copied from there. Finally i went to the local telephone exchange. One of the technicians saw my router and tested it with his user name and password and it works. Then he said that MTNL is using a mac-address lock on all exchanges running on Alcatel hardware. A new router will work only if the mac-address bound in the exchange is removed. He did that and it started working immediately. He told me that this is a security feature that is there so that you can not use the user name and password of any other MTNL user for your internet connection. In case the mac is changed, your net connection will stop working and you will have to complain and they will immediately identify who is using your connection. I had called belkins (the router company) helpdesk and they didnt know why it was not working I called MTNL help desk (1504) and they didnt know why it was not working. They didnt even know that such a thing is there. I dont think most of the MTNL tech staff would be knowing as he had to tell someone in the control room on phone and guide him how to remove the existing mac address. So, next time it may need you to go to the exchange and get it done. I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but i thought you guys may find this info useful sometime. regards saswata

html to pdf for all files in a folder

Besides htmldoc is there any other way to convert all html documents in a folder recursively to pdf files? I need to convert html to pdf in some automatic way (script based, gui etc) --typically websites downloaded for offline reading have html documents. These documents are sometimes many pages long. Since there is no way to remember how much of the html file was read before stopping reading for the day, i need to convert the html etc files to pdf--so that the reading done upto the particular day for the particular pdf file can be noted. ls -R gives the names of all files (except hidden files ) in a directory recursively ls -R | grep - i *.htm* will give me a list of all the html files in the directory. BUT i need the pathname of these filenames since their foldernames are also important to convert these files to pdf. Instead of writing a complicated shell script, is there any program which can give the complete PATH and filename for such files in a directory RECURSIVELY. Once this list of COMPLETE filenames is known it would be easy to use a CLI program to convert the file to pdf in a shell script. Recently i saw hp officejet pro printers being used very economically with regard to refilling printer ink in the cartridge. Essentially a one litre bottle of ink costing just 600 to 700 rupees was connected via flexible tubing to the cartridge. The bottle used to last the office for almost an year's printing ink needs. I wonder if such contraptions are available in Mumbai or other cities now. If anyone knows, care to share such info. Kussh

We are a small group of open source enthusiasts, working on an open source Management Information System (MIS) for Micro-Finance Institutions (MFI). >From Wikipedia: Microfinance Institutions<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microfinance_institution> *Microfinance is the provision of financial services to low-income clients, including consumers and the self-employed, who traditionally lack access to banking and related services. * In simple words, MFIs provide financial services to poor people such as loans, insurance etc. MFIs are very operation intensive organizations and hence need fool-proof IT solutions. One critical piece of software needed for MFI operations is MIS which is the core of their business. This system takes care of a whole gamut of things for them. This includes banking software which takes care of loans & savings accounts. Apart from this they also need accounting, HR and reporting/BI etc. This project is called Mostfit <http://mostfit.in> and it is available under MIT license on github <http://github.com/piyushranjan/misfit>. It is written in Ruby with Merb as the web framework, Datamapper as the ORM, RSpec for testing and Haml as the html templating language. Mostfit is also made available on a SAAS model to MFIs. Hello List, I just found that on my friends system firefox renders devanagari fonts very nicely http://imagebin.org/101392 but on my system fonts look like http://imagebin.org/101393 We both are using Firefox 3.6.3 (Mozilla Firefox for ubuntu canonical 1.0) on Kubuntu 10.04. The only difference is his Kubuntu installation is Fresh (done in last month) whereas I am upgrading mine since last 3 years. Do I need to install any package? -- With Regards Abhishek Amberkar

Hi, I came across this piece of crap http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html that claims itself to be a FOSS alternative to Windows and Better than Linux. As per them they have built a FREE OS based on NT Kernel. So this means that they have come up with a free Windows Looking OS with capabilities of running Windows applications. I am damn sure it has also replicated the security bugs. Usually cyber cafes use some sort of customized software to keep time track, block sites n similar things, small tweaks to those software can do this n much more (desktop sharing). Hello, Just like the dozens of forwarded mails that warn us of the so called 'dangers' in many things, products, places etc, I received a mail warning the reader about keyboard security. I brushed it off but went on google to check it out. It is no. 11 and goes like this.... "11. Beware of New FRAUD strategies - Keyboard PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHENEVER YOU'RE USING A PC AT A PUBLIC PLACE (Like INTERNET CAFES..ETC).CHECK THE BACK OF THE PC AND SEE IF THE BELOW DEVICE IS THERE..IF SO..DO NOT USE IT!!!!" http://infosecawareness.in/security-tips I would not take this seriously but it is from the site of CDAC, so is there any truth in this or the site itself is some fraud using CDAC's name? -- Regards, Rony. You probably aren't using the correct output stream. I'd suggest using HTTP or RTP (Realtime) for proper streaming under destination options. Also, check the Transcoding to get the correct A/V codecs for target device. IE and FF can handle only certain stream / codecs natively. Surya
