Hi philip, Feeling slightly disappointed that I didnt know about SecNet in time I would have loved to talk on the IPsec implementation I'm working on unlike FreeSwan I'm writing it on top of the new netfilter architecture ( > 2.4) so no recompiles of the kernel the entire IPSEC (ESP & AH) handling will be a single module and the ISAKMP daemon will be a userspace program. The only thing that really cheered me up was the Flynn Baba bashing :) I work with him on the Cyber Crime Cell as an advisor and I was pretty sick of him calling himself a network security specialist (I was suprised that he knew how to clear the IE cache ). Also I'm waiting around for my IBM linux programming contest results. Is there ANYONE ELSE ON THIS LIST who has taken part in the contest. (Known when the results r comming out ??) regards Vicky

Tiff image support in QT

Hi all, I am loading an image using QPixmap and successfully displaying the image in the client area of the application. But when I am working with TIF image, it is unable to load it in the QPixmap, TIFF format is not in the supported format list of QT, So when I searched, I got the following TWO options to support TIFF format in QT. First is QImageFormat's decoding procedure to install the new format. where you have to override DecoderFor, FormatName and Decode. Which I was unable to do, So any help in this case would be really appreciated. Secondly, I got the following code for defining the new format support. Which is crashing after the last line of the code. You can try Astaro Firewal it includes Ipsec VPN & Pptp Vpn on Linux 2.4 Kernal. Its a German Product. Problem with 2 NIC

Dear Luggers, Hi...2 all..... I m facing a problem for configuring 2 NIC for sharing my Internet Connection. Plz. find the complete problembelow. I m having 2 Machines. On one I m having Direct Cable Internet Connection...i.e. on Ethernet Technology. And that machine is having Linux 7.1 with Squid configured properly. I want to share that on 2-3 machines. All other machines having Win98. I want to set up its TCP/IP Configuration as Using DHCP Server and I want to make my first PC as DHCP Server for my Internal Network. For that matter I edited the file /etc/dhcpd.conf Its contents is as follows in /etc/dhcpd.conf subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.10; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option broadcast-address 192.168.0.255; option routers 192.168.0.1; } subnet 202.131.99.81 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option broadcast-address 202.131.99.255; option routers 202.131.99.81; } And then I restart DHCP Service using "dhcpd -f" command. Then it has given me error as follows. Listening on Socket /etc/192.168.0.0 Sending on Socket /etc/192.168.0.0 No subnet declaration for eth0 (202.131.99.81) Please write a subnet declaration in your dhcpd.conf file for the network segment to which interface eth0 is attched. exiting. My Internet Service Provider has provided us some fixed IPs...I would like to mentioned that I already started Squid for Netsharing. After that I've provided all the machines IP address manually. And I can be able to browse the websites. But I want to make my Linux machine as DHCP server for my Internetwork. So, in above situation where the defect amy be left by me...???? [OT] Preliminary report on SecNet 2001

I've been participating in the security and networking workshop at IITB for the last three days, and here's a little report on what's been happening there. There were lectures by our own Jaju. He spoke about different security attacks including IP spoofing, DoS, DNS spoofing, sniffing, session hijacking, etc. and demonstrated tools like nmap for port scanning. On the second day, Anil Gracias demonstrated how to analyse log files for patterns of probing and possible break ins. He demonstrated tools like snort, tripwire, and netsaint. Flynn Remedios - the advisor for the Mumbai police cyber crime cell - also spoke. He basically explained how to delete the history from Internet Explorer and how to give incorrect information when signing up for a yahoo account, and how he threatened yahoo.com with his influence with the Mumbai Police. He also told us a lot about his personal life and why he doesn't use Linux/Unix. Apparently, in 1991, when he was studying C/C++ under Vijay Mukhi, Mukhi said that Unix is for Eunuchs, and so from that day on he has been afraid to touch unix, possibly because he thinks it will make him one. My advice to anyone/any company who wants to hire him as a consultant. Just make sure you only consult him on how to walk around with one foot in your mouth. The third day was taken by Dr. Leena Chandran-Wadia, on SSL and the different kinds of message encryption/signing. Leena has an excellent command over the subject, and seemed to have done her homework not just on the subject, but also on the audience. In all, this was the best lecture of all. Mr. Ambrish Kumar took the next lecture on IPSec, touching on implementations in windows and linux. There were some doubts as to whether the linux kernel has built in IPSec compatibility or if it requires a recompile. Maybe someone on the list can shed some light on this. IPSec seems a very interesting topic, and those who have the opportunity should try it out. There's one more day to go for the workshop, I'll keep you'll posted. OT- Win NT security evaluation

I've been studying aspects of Windows NT security, and I came across an interesting bit of information which i thought of sharing... There is a body called National Computer Security Center in the US Dept of Defense.They guys basically evaluate the security of computer systems and certify a _particular_configuration at a certain level from A to D, where A is the highest level of security. It seems that Windows NT was certified at C2 level on a Compaq ProLiant 2000, running Version 3.51 of NT, as per the Orange Book Now, surprise surprise, the Orange Book is for standalone systems only! Windows NT was never evaluated on the Red Book,which provides an interpretation of the security criteria for networked systems!!! mail prob

hiee previously i was able to get mails to root when every any process copmpletes or server start or shutdown but after i clean reinstalled server with minimum options i m able to send mail thru mail command but unable to get messages in root mail box of system processes i installed sendmail also but this is the prob before i was able to get mails in root mail box i use to type "mail -f /var/spool/mail/root" to read mails right now i m getting mails but not of server process only thru users i need to get mails of server process also in root mail box like before what could be the solution? Any idea how I can auto indent (using cindent) from the command line? I'm writing a shell script to indent all my source files. This is the core of it: for f in $@; do vim -f $f +"set tw:80" +"set ts:4" +"set sw:4" \ +"set cindent" \ # ... now what? +"wq" done Now I want to add the command for indenting. The problem is that '=' won't work here (there's nothing like ':,%='). I can specify a range, but what command to apply to the range? One thing is this - ':,% !indent' - will indent a C file, but I really need this for Java (and the vim built-in indent, the = command, works perfectly for Java). Any ideas? How do people auto indent their Java/Perl files _from the command line_ (without manually doing gg=G in Vim for each file)? Manish

Nautilus and gnome-vfs

I recently installed Nautilus on my Debian woody system ... but it seems to be missing a few pieces. It cannot render html pages on its own. Clicking on Help->User Manual, the html source of the page gets displayed instead of being renderred correctly. Here are the error messages that Nautilus keeps throwing up: ** WARNING **: Can't find description even for "x-directory/normal". This probably means that your gnome-vfs.keys file is in the wrong place or isn't being found for some other reason. ** WARNING **: No description found for mime type "text/html" (file is "/"), please tell the gnome-vfs mailing list. And similar warnings for other mime types ... I checked for /usr/share/mime-info/gnome-vfs.keys and it is in the right place. Since I am using Debian, I am pretty sure that apt has taken care of all dependencies ... What could have gone wrong??? [OT] Pipes & redirection doubt

Dear friends, While going thru' the chapter of Pipes & Redirection from the *The Unix Programming Environment* (the famous yellow book by Kerninghan, et al) I read that when we use redirection, the system uses some temporary files to accomplish the task. Whereas by using pipes, the overhead of temp. files can be avoided. Can someone throw some more light on it? Like, why shud there be requirement of temporary files, where are those temp. file stored? I tried to find some more details on it in the docs as well as on the net, but the search wasn't very much fruitful. Thanks in advance. If anyone is using everybuddy, then I have a patch that fixes a few bugs in the yahoo code, and also adds a login invisible option in preferences for yahoo. hello there, i am in the process of patching my kernel. however the patch for 2.4.11 at kernel.org has dont-use appended to its name, y is that?? can i just patch 2.4.11 and then patch with 12 and so on and get away with it ? Now that you are a member you can read and post mails to the group. The messages have to be related to propogating, using, trouble-shooting, bug-fixing, of GNU/Linux operating system. Feature comparision of other operating systems and distributions is allowed, but restrain from BASHING. GNU/Linux is possibly the most friendly operating system, and hence as users of the OS let us all maintain a FRIENDLY tone to our conversations on the list. YOU are the best judge to determine the relevance or irrelevance of your post to GNU/Linux, and therefore you are responsible for your postings. Since this is not a moderated list, please read the guidelines before posting mails to the list. The sole functioning of this list is based on the self disciplinary nature of its users. ILUG-Bom Mailing List participation Guidelines ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 1. Keep paragraphs and messages short and to the point. See that what you are writing is useful to the mailing list. If not, send it as a private message to the person. If a mail has offended you personally, please send a private message to the person expressing how you feel, instead of sending it to the mailing list. 9. Acronyms can be used to abbreviate when possible, however messages that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader. Blocking telnet on a specified condition

I want to know how I can block telnet access to my machine _when_a_specified_condition_is_true_. I have a lot of people telnetting to my m/c (in office) and then they run some heavy processes. As per the rules and requirements of the project, I'm not supposed to block telnet access completely. But under certain circumstances, I can block telnet access. The "certain circumstances" can be a set of rules. For example, if load average (w|head -1|cut -f3 -d,) is greater than some limit, or if the amount of free memory (free|tail -1|tr -s ' '|cut -f4 -d' ') falls below some limit, or something like that. I'm clueless, so... please help. Manish -- Abandon the search for Truth; settle for a good fantasy.

I;ve been having problems writing cds on win98, so i was searching the support pages... kppp user access problems...

I have Red Hat 7.1 installed on my system. I use a Motorola SM56 internal modem. I have been trying to configure kppp for use by users other than the root on my system for the last few days. I can use the rp3 dialer as a normal user, but not kppp. The problem is : when I use kppp as a user, it is not able to open the modem. The error message on quering the modem being "sorry, can't open modem". the device i use is /dev/modem, which points to /dev/sm56. i have configured kppp for allowing users to dial out ( by creating kppp.allow in /etc ). When this didn't work, I tried setting the UID bit in pppd, but this did not solve my problem either. I am able to use kppp when logged in as root - i.e, the modem responds to the query modem command, and I can connect. Another thing though is that when logged in as root and while using kppp, the modem responds only to the /dev/modem device, it gives the error " modem is busy " when device is set as /dev/ttyS3. ( The modem is connected at COM4 ) As far as the permissions are concerned, all users have read and write access to the modem driver file. how do I get kppp to work when logged in as a user ? Rohit.
