Want source code to some installed programs

Linuxers, What is an SRPM? I have a CD that says "Red Hat 6.2 Source" and it contains all SRPMs. I just want to install the source code to some of the programs I already have (mainly the basic util commands like cd, mkdir, cat, grep, etc.). I don't have the sources yet, so I want to know what is the best way to obtain them. Am I supposed to install the SRPMs from CD-2 of RH? Thanks. Manish J.

restricitng shell access

hi all, is it possible to restrict the user to run only specific commands the least possible. say i create a user named "temp" and i want him to run only one shell executable called "b" can i do that..? once he logs in he shouldnt be able to change to any other directory other than /home/temp (his home directory). So can I just make him stay in his home folder and run only one executable command. is that possible... please reply reagrding the same, regards, mike.

xcdroast does not see CDread device

hello I have two CD ROMS. One is a creative CD reader infra 48. The second is a Samsung CD writer. I am able to see both the CD's as /mnt/cdrom and /mnt/cdrom1 in my system. However, xcdroast shows only one device namely samsung CD writer. hence Cd to CD copy is not possible. I am using a Red Hat 7.1 Anand

XFree86 4+ & SiS 6326 cards

this is Just for information purposes for all those having vague problems with SiS 6326 cards & Xfree86 4 & up. most of the cards sold here come with 8mb memory. In actuality this chip seems to be able to access only 4mb ( those who have "RTFM" 'ed :-) ... will know this. ) U'll have 2 -3 options.... one (most obvious ).. use the VideoRam = 4096. ( This option is ESSENTIAL for Xfree86 4.0 & up .. not sure abt. 4.1 + though ) u'll need to explicitly limit the memory to <= 4mb for these cards ... the older x-servers detected only till 4mb for the sis anyway. another . dont use the sis driver , use the "vesa" driver. ;-) .. but when u got option 1 why use this ? Also -> anyone using the default PCQ / RHL 7.1 setup.. check 2 see if U r actually using the 4.0.3 server. It seems to use 3.3.6 by default . the rpm is there inside the CD. C'ya Erle.

Traffic Monitor on port 110

Dear Lugers, I want to monitor traffic on port 110. I'm using qmail-pop3d server. I want to generate statistics of bytes transfer on that post per user. I searched quite a lot but did not find any logging from qmail-pop3d. On some list archives one has recommended that the only messages that come out of qmail-pop3d are they ones which are sent to the e-mail clients like Eudora etc. You got to get those messages and log yourself. How that can be done? I did not find any third party tools for this too. Any suggestions? Diskless node not booting

Hi all, I am having a PIII 733,256MB Ram machine with Rtl 8029 Ethernet card, in which I have installed Mandrake Linux. I have also installed Appache, Tftp,NFS, DHCP servers in the machine. I am having a diskles Celron 800, 64MB Ram machine with Rtl 8139 ethernet card. I have gone through entire LTSP Documentation and installed the Core, Kernal for rtl 8139 and bootpd rpms in server. Also I have downloaded the rtl8139 ethernet image file and tried to boot the diskless node from floppy. While I am trying to boot, I am geting the following error message in the node and I am not able to connect to the server. Searching for server(BOOTP)... . Me 192.168.0.1, Server 192.168.0.254, Gateway 192.168.0.254 Loading 192.168.0.244: /tftpboot/lts/vmlinuz.rtl8139... TFTP error 1 (File not found) Unable to load file <sleep> <abort> The file vmlinuz.rtl8139 file is available in the location /tftpboot/lts/ I had added the following lines in /etc/xinetd.conf tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.tftpd bootps dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin tcpd bootpd Also I have configured the /etc/bootptab file by specifying the MAC address of the rtl 8139 card (workstation). (In the work station the address was displying as 00:02:44:0A:A7:20. However in the bootptab file default was continuous alphanumarls like AABB03CDBC. You mean to say that you are able to download the mails on your linux box but the clients (win terminals here) are not able to download the messages ? If this is so you should configure your terminals properly and this has got nothing to do with sendmail. Logging out of apache with Perl

I'm using .htaccess and Apache's passwords to implement a password-protected page. Is there a way to log *out* of that without closing the browser? As it stands, I can log in, use the protected pages, go elsewhere, come back, and access those pages without having to give the password again. .. Or so some of our fresh engineering grads think. I've always wanted to learn Perl but I never got a Perl project. I'm still hoping. Compare this to one of my friends who has just passed his BE. He had been looking for a job for the past 2 months. He wanted to work on Java (he's a Java pro). Last week he was selected by a popular IT company to work on a Java project. He was happy, till he realised that they are going to put him on a Perl project instead. That was it - he felt betrayed. All I could advise him is that Perl is a great language and he should think of this as an opportunity to get experience on Perl and UNIX. I explained that I would have been excited if I were in his position. "Why not Perl?", I asked him. He said, "Perl is outdated!" "Gimme a break. Perl rocks. The best programs are written in C and Perl! [and Python, and Java, and... but I just wanted to make a point]", I said. He's not convinced. But, of course, he'll know once he starts working on that project. But I am irritated with this whole "Perl is outdated" and "UNIX is boring" attitude. Linux Kernel Installation

Hi, If I am compiling the Linux Kernel on one m/c and want to transfer it to other m/c. how do I do that? Should I do the following? Copy new kernel to other m/c's /boot dir copy System.map to /boot copy complete modules in /lib/modules/2.x.x Do i need to run depmod? put new kernel in /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo Boot m/c with ne kernel. Have I missed any vital steps? Will Linux (RH6.2) will boot without any prob? Do I need to copy /usr/src/linux/include any where, if yes where? do I have upgrade libraries / programs if switch from 2.2.14 to 2.2.19 or 2.4.9? Linux and Telex Support

Hi guys, Does linux have support for telex machines/telex data. I have an old 8088 based telex machine (diskless) which receives input from the serial port (9 pin) which i would like to do away with and connect the telex line to my linux box. Any pointers in this regard will be appreciated. We use this machine to send telegrams to remote areas as well as telex messages to our ships. Of course we do send emails to our ships through inmarsat, but would still like to retain the telex facility. diald, how to start

Linuxers, I've installed diald from an rpm. The diald howto says that I have to start it from the /etc/rc.d/init.d/diald script. However, there's no such script existing. I've been trying to follow the diald howto, but I would prefer if someone having the experience mail me off/on list. Also, is it absolutely necessary to use a chat script with diald? kernel compilation

Hi Friends, Yesterday I compiled(recompiled) the kernel for linux 2.4.2-2 (RHL7.1 default). The steps what I followed are like this... (I'm telling you steps just to check whether I procced in proper way or not.) 1. cd /usr/src/linux2.4.2-2 [this is the dir where the kernel is stored.] 2. make xconfig 3. make dep [ what happens if we change step 3 & 4 ] 4. make clean [i.e. first step 4 & then 3 ] 5. make bzImage [ can we change this name to something like newkernel 6. make modules 7. make modules_install [Do I need to make & install modules before making bzImage?] 8. cp bzImage /boot/bzImage 9. lilo configration. What additional steps I required if I want to install kernel from new source i.e. eigther from cdrom or from another drive? How can I create new dir called linux2.4.x ( for that respective kernel.) The compilation come up with 2 errors. They are, Now my modem is not accessable to me even with root. whenever I try to connect to the internel with kppp it gives the message, "Sorry, can't open modem". Secondly, whenever I boot into linux it gives the following message, "mounting local file system: mount: fs type is not supported by kernel. [ Failed ] " Same message appears for remote file system. In this case remote file system is my windows partitions. Due to this, during shut down I get the message, stoppin automount [ Failed ] What are the changes I need to do to avoid this? For email, we have tied up with a service provider named station12 who is based in netherlands. An email is created through any email client, goes to my linux box, to hathway cable to station12 to inmarsat which locates in which occean my ship is travelling and sends it to their sat C terminal. What is 64-bit computing?

Hi, The question may seem trivial but I have a significant confusion in my mind becoz of the conflicting things I read. We were tought that the microprocessor architecture is denoted as the "NUMBER OF DATA LINES"-bit architecture. For example --- becoz 8085 has 8 data lines it is 8 bit, 8086 has 16 so it is 16 bit etc. WHY THEN PENTIUM IS CALLED 32 BIT ARCHITECTURE EVEN IF IT HAS 64 DATA LINES?? Also Intel is tomtomming about their new 64-bit Itenium architecture. What is it that makes Itenium 64 bit?? Now for the software side. What is that that makes a FILE SYSTEM 32bits/64bits?? Problem in booting disklessnode (LTSP)

Hi all, Please guide me to solve out this networking problem. I have installed Mandrake Linux in my PIII 733 256MB Ram machine which is having RTL 8029 Ethernet card. I have also installed NFS,Appache,DHCP servers. My challenge is to boot a diskless node using LTSP (Linux terminal server project). I have gone through the doucments LTSP (ltsp.org), downloaded and installed the respective Kernal, Core and SVGA rpms in my server.The dhcpd.conf and host.allow file also configured. Also I had downloaded the Ethernet image file for rtl 8139 card and made an ethernet image floppy for booting the node. While booting the node with ethernet image floppy, the MAC address of the card is is displying properly and finally it is giving a message that searching DHCP server and start searching and login Window is not appearing on the screen. The cables and connections are perfect from server to node through a hub. I am giving a talk in the ACM Seminar today evening at 6:30pm, NCST Juhu. Web Engineering with Zee Object Publishing Environment (ZOPE) ZOPE is a feature rich web application server written in Python (a powerful object oriented programming language). It is object oriented with built-in support for XML, search, password authentication, security, user management, and supports the protocols like http, ftp, WebDav, XML-RPC. It can use data from various sources like file systems, ZODB, RDBMS, and LDAP. The lecture will cover introduction, installation, demonstration of most of the features of ZOPE and a few of the ZOPE Products used for the creation and maintenance of dynamic web sites. During the talk the suitability of ZOPE for developing e-education applications will be discussed. Nagarjuna

Hi, I think there are several restricted shells available on net. If you cant find them try the following. You can write small shell script(say /bin/rksh) which does 'chroot' to '/restricted_home'. And then calls 'bash'. Under '/restricted_home' you can create 'bin/', 'home/temp/'. You might also have to create '/restricted_home/etc/passwd' with 'temp' user's entry(same as in /etc/passwd) in it. You can than put binaries(commands) in bin. Note that these binaries should NOT have any library dependencies, otherwise you might have to create '/restricted_home/lib/' and put files under it. Note that you must specify user's shell as '/bin/rksh' in /etc/passwd. Amish. Hi Everyone. 1)I have configured the apache sereve. But when I access the site. It gives me an error 403/.Forbidden. Where can I set the permission. Note all the dirroot and the related folders have nobody as user and group. sendmail rewriting for vsnl relay

I believe that I have managed to configure my sendmail.cf file to properly counter vsnl's new system. It uses separate generics tables for the header and the envelope. I still have to tweak it a bit, but it's getting better. If this mail gets through from my real address (iname.com) then you know that it has worked. kudzu fails

When I boot my sys, I get this message. Checking for new hardware [FAILED] That's kudzu. When I run it from the command line, it dumps core. What could be the problem? It's irritating me. I've just changed my processor from p3 450 to p3 500. I don't think that should make a difference at all, should it? Manish J.
