Configuring DHCP Server?

1stly, I appologise for repeating the question. I was wondering if any1 here has successfully configure DHCP Server. I have tried configuring PCQ RH 7.1, as a DHCP server, but have repeatedly failed, i have followed every single step mentioned in the magazine and the how-to's, but m not able to get the DHCP Server working. Only 1's I could setup the DHCP on PCQ RH 7.1 right, where i have done a full installation, in my office. Here at home, where i dont have enuf disk space, and trying to setup for testing, it doesnt work. I have repeatedly formated and tried reconfigured the setup, but havent got my DHCP to work. Hi I have installed RH7.0 on my pc with i810 motherboard, but i have a problem with the sound. when i run sndconfig i selected the i810 AC97 audio, but i cannot hear the sample sound which is being played to test the audio. Can anyone help. Thanks Dominic

Ip Chains

How do I upgrade my copy of Ipchains?? I am currently running version 1.3.10. I want to upgrade it to version 1.3.10-7. I have this file, ipchains-1.3.10-7.src.rpm. I tried rpm uvh ipchains-1.3.10-7.src.rpm, it said my uninstall version had depreciated. So I used rpm ivh ipchains-1.3.10-7.src.rpm, it showed a bar and 100%, but my ipchains dint get updated. Can anyone help me here?? Kunal

VSNL plays a dirty trick on corp customers ALLEN J. MENDONCA BANGALORE: In what can only be seen as a highly controversial move, VSNL, India's largest ISP, on Thursday blocked all corporate email across the country on its networks, barring e-mails being sent via leased lines. The method is simple - no mail originating from a VSNL dialup line will be forwarded (and will in effect be bounced) unless it is in the form of user(a)vsnl.com, user(a)vsnl.net, user(a)vsnl.net.in or user(a)vsnl.in. Try to send a mail such as user(a)yahoo.com, user(a)hotmail.com user(a)yourcompany.com, and your mail will be rejected. This immediately stops any valid dialup user of VSNL in India from sending out mail using his or her corporate or personal identity. VSNL director (operations) K.P. Tiwari claimed that this was to "protect" its customers from things such as spam, but this weak cover story didn't last even a few seconds as VSNL openly advertised (in the same e-mail message sent to users) a premium service that allows non-VSNL-domain mailing at a tremendous cost, with fixed limits. While users can still send non-VSNL domain mail via web-interfaces provided by many services such as indiatimes.com, yahoo.com, hotmail.com, it prevents people from using industry standard mailers such as Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, etc, which depend on being able to send mail using the SMTP protocol via their ISP's mail relay servers. The effect of this is devastating. For one, VSNL gave no notice of their intention to do this, giving people no chance at all to arrange for alternatives. Secondly, the motives VSNL offers for this move don't hold water at all. The real reason appears to be that VSNL is seeking alternate sources of revenue (see http://internet.vsnl.com/vmail/vmail.html), while at the same flexing its monopolistic muscles (while it can). The results of this move are very likely to be anything VSNL expected. 1. VSNL has changed operational rules of its service in such a way as to in effect stop services to legitimate customers unless they either pay more or change their e-mail address. This is something easily challengeable in a consumer court, and reports are that such moves are already afoot. 2. While many customers will leave VSNL for other ISPs, it is very likely that other ISPs are also going to introduce such limitations, to reap the financial benefits of VSNL's move - probably in the form of lower rates than quoted at http://internet.vsnl.com/vmail/vmail.html - but with the same overall effect on customers. This is similar to all airlines raising their rates when Indian Airlines does. Exocore Consulting CTO Atul Chitnis had this to say, "ironically, this move affects mostly Microsoft Windows users, as their mail programs do not have the facility to deliver mail directly to the destination (in technical terms - MX-based delivery). Linux and other Unix users are affected only to the extent that they need to reconfigure their system's Mail Transport Agents (MTA) such as sendmail, qmail, postfix, etc, to deliver mail directly rather than via a relay server. Total downtime would be about 10 minutes overall." Chitnis proved this by sending us an e-mail message using his own domain name (exocore.com) from his notebook that runs Linux, via a VSNL dialup account. How will the government react to such a flexing of VSNL's monopolistic muscles? That remains to be seen, but it is clear that something needs to be done. India cannot afford to be seen as a "user-unfriendly" place in the current context of globalisation. -- There are three things I have always loved and never understood -- art, music, and women.

Strange Message on Potato.

Folks, I started to have this weird problem on potato r2.2. The kernal was custom compiled with minimum required things which resulted in a 450K compressed image. But I compiled the kernal a long while ago but the messages have started lately. When I boot, sometimes just before the login prompt or sometimes even after, I get the following message a random number of times. (max number observed is under 10) VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for kupdate... Then sometimes when I do shutdown I get the same message, again, a random number of times. quasi p.s. I do not have KDE... if the kupdate means Kde...? -- postscript -- Math is like love -- a simple idea but it can get complicated. -- R. ARIS worm notification

Hi, As you're aware, the ARIS worm is spreading real fast on the Internet. My dial-up machine has received nearly 200 ARIS probes from infected machines since this morning, in about 6 hours of uptime. SecurityFocus has setup an ARIS notification address. They will notify the administrators of infected systems given the IP's of these systems, which will help curb the spread of the virus. This is a request to please cull your HTTP logs (if you're running HTTPD) and send the appropriate information to SecurityFocus. The command to do this is: fgrep ".ida?XXXXX" /var/log/httpd/access_log | \ cut -d" " -f1,4,5 | \ sed -e 's/[][]//g' | \ Mail -s "ARIS Infection Report from httpd access_log" aris-report(a)securityfocus.com [Line may have wrapped] This would work on a RH 6.2 system. Hi all, Yesterday I downloaded junkbuster-2.0.2-8.i386.rpm and tried to install it using $ rpm -Uvh junkbuster-2.0.2-8.i386.rpm The command returned failed dependancies asking for chkconfig However chkconfig is already installed on my system .. $ whereis chkconfig chkconfig /sbin/chkconfig No man page is available for chkconfig .. Rp3 Config

Hi ! I have this weird problem. I share my pc with my younger brother .I have the root password. Now whenever I add an ISP account in dialup config it appears globally i.e. my brother is also able to access that account. We use different ISP's I would like to configure rp3 so that my brother will not have access to my ISP and he should be able to add his own ISP. How should I go about it? P.S. Just tried Black Box. Really cool and fast. -- Every time I look at you I am more convinced of Darwin's theory.

Hi Friends, I want to install sound cord on RHL 7.1 I tried sndconfig, but it says that there is no pnp or pci type of sound card. I have Yamaha opl3 sax, isa 16 bit sound card. How can I install it? ( I checked hardware compatability on the redhat.com, & the sound card is fully supported by the RedHat 7.1 ) I heard, we need something called isapnptools, to install the sound card. Where can I get it. There is no such rpm callled isapnptool on the installation CD. Unknown Error: Directories Corrupted

Dear Linuxers, I'm running RH 7.1. Yesterday, I found a directory /usr/local/src corrupted. I can't cd into that directory. The output of ls -l gives. ?--s-w-rw- 10172 2381774154 666668534 4257099022294712319 Apr 5 1958 /usr/local/src Note the timestamp, going back to 1958. Really wierd output. Today morning, network failed. Can't even bring up lo interface. Says /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts: No such file or directory. $ ls -l /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts ?--------- 50680 1904803840 2332316496 14160381047924035664 Jul 12 1937 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts Has anyone encountered this type of problem. As a root also I cant do anything. Also, lately I upgraded to RH 7.1. When I ping any host it gives me Warning:time of the day goes back, taking countermeasures. If you notice the timestamp of the above 2 directories, it has gone way back. Can there be any link between these two? wvdial is still Starting pppd

Hello Group In my Redhat Linux 7.1 box wvdial is giving me a problem. After dialing the VSNL ISP and answeing the prompts wvdial dial says starting pppd at so and so time and holds up there. I have to manually disconnect from this point and the connection is not completed. I do all this as a superuser. Please can anybody suggest a solution to the problem?

cannot browse the net

I have a Mandrake 8, installed on my PC. I use KPPP to connect to the net. I havent had any problems connecting to the net. but when i try to browse the net i could not. what could be wrong? I tried pinging to the ISP and some sites like yahoo, with www.yahoo.com but it just said "unkown host: www.yahoo.com". I then tried pinging the local and remote machine with the IPs i got frm the tail command, and it gave me the result. Pls guide me what could be wrong and what i should do? Mount points

Hi, During the installation I found following options in mount point: / /boot /usr /home /var /opt /tmp /usr/local why r they needed? How much space should one assign for each of them during the installation? When you do the installation, where does the packages get installed ( i.e. in which mount point \ directory) How can I mount my Windows partitions in the RHL 7.1? hi krishnan, i think are confusing DSL with a leased line serial connection. firstly for every DSL connection, if u started getting 4 addresses ( iam confused by what u mean by ur description of addresses here) then we would be out of stock of ip addresses in a day. ur suggestion might be right , but i would like to modify it like this without ip forwarding, |--------| ______|__ |--------| ISP | 1 | | | --------|WinBox | |LinuxBox| |__ ___2_| |________| | |----- To private network in this case, the connection from ur isp goes to the usb port A crossover cable connects the linux and the windows box. A static route is added from the NIC 1 to the linux box with NIC 1 as the gateway for packets destined to the linux box. The lan connects to the windows gateway through the 2nd NIC, and is seprated from the external network. awaiting ur comments :) regards, prem.

there is something called the 'mars-nwe' package which ought to do what u want. it comes with the RHL 7.1 CD2. also u need to have ipx-tools and the ipx module loaded dynamically into ur kernel

realplayer problems

hi friends I had installed realplayer ver. 8 on my RHL 7.1 (rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2_rpm.rpm). It worked fine for some time but suddenly stopped working. I tried reinstalling however the effort was futile. Any help in this regard would be music to my ears. the error is due to lilo not loading properly. see this link for ur kind of error http://www.crosswinds.net/~beginnerslinux/lilo.html and one way to solve lilo problems is to use, loadlin and vmlinuz files.. u will find that in the redhat cdrom too, in the dosutils directory. regards, prem

Mounting Netware Volumes

Hi, I use RHL7.1 on my desktop and also win98. This is because i need to use certain files from my netware volumes. Is it possible to mount netware volumes on linux. Using peer-to-peer in win98. we are able to share and browse the hard disks of other clients from my machine. Is it also possible to mount other win98 clients on my linux box in a similar fashion. I needed to send only text messages to certain persons, but however much i tried to change the setting of my outlook from html to plain text, it would revert back to html and send messages only thorugh html. I later found that i was infected with VBS/Haptime virus due to which this problem occurred. When the system was cleaned, i was able to set it correctly to plain text. ALSA and aRTS

Hello All, I recently installed ALSA drivers from PCQ CD(Aug 2001). After I installed ALSA the system started giving ringing sound. I noticed that if I stop aRTS server I get normal sound again. Basically I prefer aRTS as it blends two simultaneous sound events and plays both at same time. But I prefer ALSA too as default 'sndconfig' driver only plays at 48.8KHz rate. Another problem is if I do not start aRTS and I open 'kmedia' it internally starts aRTS. Also KDE seems to use aRTS if available. What could be the problem? and solution? I use i810(AC97) sound card. Hello Group In my Redhat Linux 7.1 box wvdial is giving me a problem. After dialing the VSNL ISP and answeing the prompts wvdial dial says starting pppd at so and so time and holds up there. I have to manually disconnect from this point and the connection is not completed. I do all this as a superuser. Please can anybody suggest a solution to the problem?
