Boot Messages When linux boots there is a plethora of messages which really bugs me. Can I have a simple message like "Welcome To Linux" when I boot into linux instead of those overwhelming messages (those telling me my processor type, HDD type etc...or the ones telling me that the startup services are ' [ OK ] ' ) Mail Server Can I set up my own mail server ? In the PCQ's latest issue there are instructions on setting it in intranet. Can I set it up on my workstation ? Is there some site giving all the instructions Has someone among you tried it? Linux and Multimedia Yesterday I played a mpg file for the first time on linux and I was very disppointed by the performance . The file was almost played in slow motion :-( Windows media player gave me a better performance.Guess Linux and multimedia don't go well together . Kernel Comiplation I am relatively new to linux and when I get some major problems I get atleast one suggestion to ' compile the kernel ' . What does it mean? I only know C and Pascal programming . Can someone enlighten me please.

Using precompiled kernel

I just compiled linux-2.4.6 on RH 7.1 from the PCQ CD. Now, for some reason I want to remove my ext2 partition. I will be reinstalling RH later. So, in order to use the kernel I had compiled earlier, which files, other than the kernel image, do I need to backup. The modules/2.4.6 directory? Also, System.map-2.4.6 maybe? Hallo friends, I am a beginner of Linux. I am about to shift my Novell netware platform to Linux. We are having one PIII 733 64 MB Ram, 20 GB HDD server and 10 diskless nodes. Please help me to sort out the problems. 1. Can I install Linux in the server and configure the diskless nodes under linux. Or all diskless nodes must have hard disk and I have to install work station in it. 2. Can I run the existing clipper programs in Linux. Or what is the alterations I have to make in Clipper programs to run under Linux. 3. What is the other alternative for Clipper, if I can't run clipper programs under Linux. 4. What is the minmum configuration required for server and workstations (Our nodes are Pentium 100s with 16 MB RAM) 5. Can the X windows can be accessed through diskless nodes. 6. Can I share the Internet/email using a Proxy server and diskless nodes. We are having one unlimited Satyam dailup connection, which is dailed through ordinary BSNL Line. Hello people, i need some advice : Is it possible to give the Sun Certified Java Programmer exam without undergoing trainig in India. The Sun FAQ explicitly states that it is but the centres' list does not contain any Testing Centre in India. Are there any ? Also is there any standard certification test for C and C++. by standard i mean here something that is accepted in the industry.If so which and where can i give them. Finally something way way OT : I was told by some seniors that official certification like Sun Java Certification etc is given credit when applying for admission to US colleges after GRE If there are any (ex) engineering students around, can someone tell me if this is true ? Save yourself

I run XFig on Solaris, with desktop exported to my linux box. Within a few seconds of starting XFig, I get this error: No Response to the Save Yourself command. The program may be slow, stopped or broken. You may wait for it to respond or remove it. Stop It Now Wait The program has not stopped, is not slow and is not broken. I am using it while this error shows up, and using it well. Everything works perfectly. I could just put this window in the background, but it pops up every now and then. Any ideas? It doesn't happen everytime. In fact, happens at random. In my experience, this error normally occurs when one tries to stop X while some app is running. However, I am not trying to stop X. In fact, the only reason for starting X was to run xfig. Odd problem with reading CD-ROMs

Hi all, Okay, I have a odd problem here reading a CD. I have a CD full of MP3s which was burned by a friend of mine who burned by some software on Windows. So, unfortunately, my Linux box is not able to see it correctly. It is able to see only some of the mp3 files, not all. That is not the problem though. The problem is that I am not able to play the mp3 files properly. During the decoding of mp3 file, mpg123 gives me the following type of error : Illegal Audio-MPEG-Header 0x27240dc1 at offset 0x400e6. Skipped 292 bytes in input. It does not stop decoding, but the output is not proper whenever the error occurs (since it keeps on skipping some part of the file). I get many more such errors while the song is playing. I have verified that the CD is not damaged, and nor it is corrupt, because in Windows with WinAmp I don't find any such problem. NOW comes the odd part. I am using kernel 2.4.6, Red Hat 6.2. (highly modified then the standard distro). If I use the old kernel - 2.2.16, I *don't* get the above mentioned problem. The mp3 file from the CD gets decoded without any problem. I have tried using kernel 2.4.3, 2.4.5, and of course the current 2.4.6. But with all of them the problem persits, but with the old kernel there are no problems whatsoever. I tried to play the other mp3 files and with those files also some error is always reported by mpg123 (while decoding) and then it skips some input of the file. I tried using xmms, mp3blaster also. All of them give error exactly at the same spot of the song. And with *all* of them there is no problem with the old kernel (2.2.16). I also tried using the latest versions of mpg123, mp3blaster and xmms. But still the same thing. With all of them I don't get any errors with the old kernel, but with the new kernel (2.4.x), I still get errors. Could it be that there are any changes in the drivers for CD-ROM which could be causing the problem ? When I boot into the new kernel (2.4.x) I get the following boot message, hdd: CREATIVECD4820E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive With the old kernel (2.2.16) I get, hdd: CREATIVECD4820E, ATAPI CDROM drive Note the "CD/DVD-ROM" in the new kernel and only "CDROM" in the old kernel. Could this be driver problem ? Has anyone faced a similar problem. Regards, Rajen. Can't connect to Rolta thru' Linux

Hi all Luggers!! Is there anyone one the lug who is using RoltaNet's dialup net services? I've been facing problems in connecting to the RoltaNet .. The logs say that I can connect to their server but then while logging on to the network, the connection hangs ,, And it even blocks my internal modem,i.e. I can't even kill the connection .. If anyone was successful in setting up dialup connection to the RoltaNet then please help me .. Connection to the VSNL dialup connection is absolutely fine and to my surprise it's much faster than what I used to get with Windows !! p.s : Contacted RoltaNet help center, but they said they din't know anything abt Linux and refused to help .. I tried to use the kernel driver by editing the /etc/modules.conf but in vain. Also can anyone please help me in configuring my internal modem Motorola SM56. Permanent Setting of DMA

I edited rc.local and DMA is now turned off everytime I load linux I would like to know if there is some file in which hdparm settings are stored so that DMA is turned off *permanently* In the boot process I still get the hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } errors. Is there some way that I can disable echoing of these errors? (It kinda gives me an uneasy feeling ;-) Just for curiosity: When I checked out /var/log/demsg I found out this line hda: 8452080 sectors (4327 MB) w/256KiB Cache, CHS=526/255/63, UDMA(33) Also the BIOS gives the following info about my HDD: Pri Master : 6.01 ST34311A Ultra DMA Mode-2 , S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status OK It means that my HDD supports UDMA , then why I have to disable it to keep things normal? Does disabling it have effect on the performance?

I have been using Linux since RHL 5.2 and haven't faced any major problems since then. However with PCQ Linux 7.1 , which was distributed by PCQuest in it's July 2001 issue,I am facing severe problems as described below. I have Cyrix MII 300 Processor,64 MB SDRam,700 MB Hard Disk Space reserved for Linux,Yamaha Sound Card,Sis 6215c PCI graphic adapter (No prob with this thing though) Now whenever I start playing mp3 using either mpg123 in character mode or XMMS in GNOME and work on something else like just managing files or editing a text file ,etc.. the LINUX simply hangs! Even if I press <alt><F2> for another terminal nothing happens. Also while multitasking the quality of sound is pathetic. I reinstalled RHL 6.2 and I did not find any of the problems.Linux is as stable as it is known for. I tried not to do *any* other jobs while playing mp3 and still 7.1 hangs ! Please help me as I am very frustrated by this as I love mp3's as much as I love Linux. P.S. mount: incorrect major/minor version

Anyone remember this (or similar) error we were getting a while back? I don't think we found a solution, did we? Well, Nikhil Jagtiani recently fonud out that the major/minor numbers to which the error message refers are kernel version numbers, not device node numbers! hey buddy, You can get the drivers for your Motorola SM56 "softmodem" at http://e-www.motorola.com/products/softmodem/support/software.html#linux You will have to have a 2.4.x kernel for this to work. Every guy has to do the following first : [novice, that is] - RH033 Intro to Linux - 32hrs - RH133 Sys Admin - 32 hrs - RH253 Network and Security - 32hrs Then s/he has to give an exam called RH302. It is not another module or course - just a code, as they call it, methinks]. After that a person is a certified RHCE. For the guys who already know Linux there is the fast track - called RH300 [40hrs]. Then s/he also ends up giving the RH302. And becomes a RHCE. [ avoiding the other 3 tracks] That's two ways to become an RHCE. NIIT and others can conduct all the tracks etc BUT not the RH302. That is the sole domain of RHINDIA. So not point doing all those other tracks since you would never become an RHCE until you did the 302. So back to base - RHI. Gotcha!!! The RH site gives all this info in profusion. Can't Upgrade rpms

Hi guys, I was trying to install modutils-2.4.6-2 and got the rpm <=3 error and therefore tried to upgrade my rpm to rpm-3.0.6.6x it gives me the following error bzip2 >= 0.9.0c-2 is needed by rpm-3.0.6.6x libbz2.so.0 is needed by rpm-3.0.6.6x where do i get these ? Word Boundaries in Bash

How do I change the definition of a word boundary in Bash? When I type "ping www.yahoo.com[C-w]", I am left with "ping ". I would like it if I were left with "ping www.yahoo." on pressing C-w. Is there a definition (maybe in the form of a regexp) somewhere in a config file that I can change? Or is there a way to create your own shortcut commands in Bash? I know I can do that in Vim. Not sure about Bash. No mention in the Bash manual. :-/ Manish

I dont have much idea but I will try to tell you what I know. In server.xml use PoolTcpConnector as connector and specify max_threads, max_spare_threads, min_spare_threads paramters.
