Dear Linuxsers, I have installed Tally Erp 9 on wine using OpenSuse 11.1 on a regular AMD Athlon Desktop.It work well. Now My issue is how do I load Opensuse to eeeBox b202 pc which has only usb based external drive. Previously I have used Unetbootin to create a Ubuntu Interprid loader.. When I use the same method for Opensuse it just does not boot gives an error /ubkern corrupt ? I have used the same ISO to make the DVD to load the other computer Please help me with this , At least a lan based installl should be possible But I don't know how to ? A question on security.

Hi All, Today a friend of mine showed me a security feature in Windows XP, which to my knowledge is not available under Linux.(Please tell me I am wrong). So here goes, he showed me a security feature in Windows XP wherein the user can setup a custom access to their own files and restrict access to others, including Adminstrators. Is there a way to do so in GNU/Linux systems (for root)? As I am not aware of any means, I was not able to give him any answers. This feature came to light when we were discussing our Company's adoption of IS)-27001. He has also claimed that this is also the reason why Linux adoption in Enterprises is very low. Hi, An acquaintance of mine works for a Mumbai based NGO[1]. They are looking to replace (and add additional features to) an existing application that they use to record and manage their data (I don't know the exact details about this yet). The current application they use was built by a couple of guys using ASP+MS SQL. They do not have the source code for the current application. So, they are looking to: a. Replicate all the functionality of the current application. b. Migrate the current data to the new application. c. Add a new module which provides a workflow similar to the existing one. d. Design the application in such a manner that allows addition of further workflows. e. Provide support and feature enhancement (for something like 5+ years) They also would like to share this application with their offices worldwide if they find it useful enough for their purposes. I strongly recommended that they go the Open source way by asking whichever vendor they choose to provide them with the source code under a FOSS license. I further recommended that they insist on building the application using FOSS (for instance, a LAMP stack). Now, since they are non-technical per se and it seems like their original software provider is no longer 'available', they need guidance/advice for the specifications itself. So, here's my request, can somebody in Mumbai ... a. Be willing to visit this organization, take a look at their existing application and advise them on the best (FOSS oriented) approach to take ? (It'll be nice if someone can do this without slapping a consulting fee on them). b. Build this application and provide the required support (This, of course, would be a regular business contract). Obviously, (a) and (b) can be the same person/company. Dear All, The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has released a draft 'National Policy on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) In School Education' (see http://education.nic.in/secedu/ict.pdf , I have also attached the policy). While the earlier policy draft did not have even a single mention of FOSS, the current draft states in para 5.3.2 "Free ware, free and open source software applications will be preferred". Certain other sections which are appreciable are - "4.1.2 The ICT literacy programme will endeavour to provide a broad set of generic skills and conceptual knowledge and not focus on mastering the use of specific software applications." It will be great if you can send in your feedback to MHRD, appreciating/welcoming the preference accorded to FOSS and also requesting if FOSS can be made mandatory instead of just preferred. using orca to read pdf files in evince

Hi, I cud get orca to start up and have configured it. But it is not able to read any page which is open in the evince document reader. The key binding for "reading entire document" is KP_add. I wonder what that means. Can anybody help?. Orca is only able to read menus or echo typed characters, words etc and that too is hardly heard (voice is cut). Regards, Kussh

VOB file merge and conversion

I am new to linux. I am using Fedora 10. Recently i bought an iPod. I can't get to load my DVDs on my iPod because there are mutiple .vob files and .vob is not supported format of iPod. flv conversion to ogg or mp3 files --video to audio files

Hi all, Does anybody know of any FOSS program in linux which can convert from flv format (video) to mp3 or ogg (audio) format. I am using the file conversion service at zamzar.com and it takes pretty long to upload large files. It would be nice if there was a program for this sort of work. Also earlier i had heard about a site to convert pdfs to mp3 files but can't seem to find the site. if anybody knows of a good site or software pls let me know. I have been trying to update my knowledge and many times the eyes get tired and so audio would help supplement the learning process. Thanks for any help. Regards, Kussh

Dear Rony, Since the data file is on windows server I mount the CIFS to linux & I have pointed Tally.ini to see the mount z:\mnt\Tally I am able to see the contents in Tally , but it frequently crashes or hangs and takes a lot of time to load the data. Dovecot Time moved backwards error

Dear Members, I have setup a small mail server for my office on ubuntu server "Hardy" running on vmware. It runs postfix +Dovecot +getmail + squirremail. Every thing works fine except dovecot which crashes because of "Time moved backwards error" To overcome it I have put a restart in CRON every 5 min , but I keep getting this message Cron <someuse@localhost> /etc/init.d/dovecot restart >/dev/null start-stop-daemon: open pidfile /var/run/dovecot/master.pid: Permission denied (Permission denied) How can I overcome this dovecot problem , I googled but could not find a proper solution With regards Deepak Yahoo! recommends that you upgrade to the new and safer Internet Explorer 8. http://downloads.yahoo.com/in/internetexplorer/

Dear Members, I have installed Interprid Ubuntu Desktop on My EEE PC B202 which is Atom 1.6Ghz I want to use Tally 9 ERP on it. I Installed Wine from the package manager & Installed Tally on it. Tally opens fast but it does not open the data file fast, It hangs , the data files are on a windows share which I have mounted on to /mnt/Tally The same thing works ok on another desktop using Interprid , please help with the settings ? strange case of chm files which don't open correctly

Recently had gone over to linuxappfinder.com and was seeing the software collection of alternatives to windows softwares. Came across free-cad.sourceforge.net. Downloaded the help documentation in chm format (bottom, right corner of the home page under most downloaded section). Tried opening the CHM file with xchm. It opens as a plain text file with all the html tags etc. Maybe there are better (more uptodate) chm readers available now than the xchm I am now using. If anybody knows of such softwares, pls let me know. Earlier (on another computer while using ubuntu 8.10 or 8.04) i had come across another chm/ebook reader software using synaptic but haven't installed it yet on the 9.04 computer. Thanks, Kussh

setup vlc as my default multimedia application in ubuntu9.04

Right now totem is set as the default application for all multimedia related files and it does not work as it should--i.e. there is no sound when any multimedia file is opened--even for ogg or wav files. Video files run but without any sound. I can't get totem to work correctly but vlc works perfectly. I tried all the usual tricks--install the bad files, restricted formats, etc etc but totem does not work. gxine and others also work but totem does not. So my question is --which configuration file needs to be tweaked such that all multimedia formats by default open with VLC and not with totem? am using ubuntu9.04 and have an integrated sound card on an asus motherboard. Have changed the properties of most multimedia formats in nautilus to open with VLC instead of totem by default but there are cases such as while using search or other applications (such as kalarm) where the default system program for multimedia (ie totem) gets activated. How to track using MAC address or any other possibility ? Q2. How to get mac address when you do not have laptop with you. I have done ssh to other lan systems, Will it be possible to get mac address using those .ssh keys ?? Or any method to get mac address. The new browser incorporates a lot of features of the HTML 5 specification, and we consider it a leap forward for the web. To celebrate the release, demo new features in Firefox 3.5, and discuss issues of the Open Web and standards, we are organizing an event on this Sunday, July 19th, at National College, Bandra(W) in Mumbai. Relax Folks, I never thought that my simple questions would lead to such a huge debate. My questions were very simple. And I got the answer too through these discussions. So I have come to this point (please correct me if am wrong or misinterpreted) 1. Just like Microsoft, Red Hat has a per machine License system (thats what its EULA specifies I suppose). This has nothing to do with trade mark, copyright etc etc. but Violation of EULA 2. Copying RH from the original CD (or using the same CD) and installing it on another Machine for which the License payment has not be done is similar to installing Windows from original or (copied CD) on to other unlicensed systems. This is refered to as Piracy I suppose. 3. On the machines without License, users cant get access to Microsoft Updates (including security, service packs, Internet Explorer, Media Player, etc.) as the MS website checks for Genuineness of the installed Windows. So if a user wants those premium facilities, then he/she will have to obviously pay for that in form of License thats what is referred to as Subscriptions in terms of Red Hat where the User needs to pay for support and upgrades. 4. Microsoft I have heard visits its clients (corporates) to audit whether they have installed their products on systems exceding than those permitted in the EULA, if found then the clients are Fined. There is a similar clause in Red Hat EULA (discussed in earlier threads). So from a Regular (Desktop) End User perspective I can understand that Microsoft:Windows and Red Hat:Linux Although we dont have an option of FREE Windows, we though have option for FREE Linux alternatives like Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, Open Suse, etc. So I think thats what answers the question.
