*The BJP’s awkward embrace of Free Software * ** http://www.hindu.com/2009/04/10/stories/2009041055960900.htm Deepa Kurup *The party’s discovery of the virtues of OS would appear to sit uncomfortably with its slogan “Let a hundred Bangalores bloom.” * The IT manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party has created ripples among software circles with its support for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), and its opposition to “digital standards.” While the Kerala government has a policy that makes the use of FOSS in government and education mandatory, Tamil Nadu has implemented it in a few departments. Left parties have for long backed the Free Software movement politically. It is surprising that the BJP, with its strong pro-corporate and pro-patent leanings, should back this cause. Even as the Free Software community is celebrating this latest endorsement, sceptics among its ranks are cautious about taking the BJP’s promises at face value. Its track record, when in power at the Centre and in the States, provides grounds for these misgivings. Consider this. As late as January 2009, the BJP government in Gujarat, led by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, inked a deal with the global proprietary software giant Microsoft that includes a Microsoft-developed IT curriculum for high school students, teacher training, certification programmes, and offers free Microsoft software development tools to universities. Less than two months on, the party manifesto in its “eEducation” section declares: “We will actively promote Free and Open Source Software, including operating systems, which will introduce the habit of innovation (‘tinkering’) among students.” In fact, in 2006 the BJP government in Rajasthan signed a similar deal with Microsoft under Project Shiksha, and in 2004, the BJP-JD(S) coalition in Karnataka, tied up with proprietary giant for education and e-governance initiatives. Prabir Purkayastha of the Delhi Science Forum feels the manifesto reflects the “blinkered vision” of the BJP, which has “never taken an anti-monopoly stance.” Dr. Purkayastha points out how Free Software circles are abuzz with an interesting anomaly in L.K. Advani’s speech at the manifesto launch: “Mr. Advani referred to how impressed he was on his visit to the Microsoft Office in the U.S. He did not see the stark contradiction, as he proudly reflected on the number of Indians present there!” FOSS activists, however, hope this means increased visibility for their cause, considering a large number of National E-governance Missions are in the pipeline, for which Rs. 6000 crore has been earmarked in the 11th Five Year Plan. The 40-page document also promises to set up an “IT standards-setting body,” carving it out of the Bureau of Indian Standards, and promises all government software will conform to these “open standards.” Venkitesh Hariharan, a senior Red Hat official, says: “It is significant because so far there hasn’t been any conscious effort towards policy making. Public data and websites have been in both proprietary and open format.” Digital standards As for their new stance on “digital standards” — that is, proprietary claims on algorithms and software programmes — the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, notably, was the first to amend the Patent Act in March 1999 and in June 2002 as part of the WTO agreement under Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). The seemingly innocuous phrase “software per se,” which the NDA government introduced into section 3(K) of the Indian Patents Act, was a loophole through which software could be brought under a patenting regime from a copyright one. According to Dr. Purkayastha, the amendments had nothing to do with TRIPS which does not even include software or computer programmes in its ambit. “A 2004 ordinance provided for patenting of computer programmes used in combination with hardware. Later, while in the opposition the BJP opposed the bill — even though it was virtually drafted by their Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley. It was presented without any changes,” he says. This was revoked in 2005 by the United Progressive Alliance under pressure from the Left. Corporates such as IT majors Infosys and TCS have long lobbied for patents. Facebook & Hotmail on Ubuntu

Hi, A friend has a strange problem that I have been unable to solve, so I thought I'd canvas for suggestions here. Since the last week or so, he has been unable to log in to Facebook or Hotmail from Ubuntu. He has a dual-boot machine with Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows XP. He is connected via a MTNL Triband connection. Both sites still work fine in XP. Other sites work fine in Ubuntu. He's tried several alternate browsers besides Firefox, including Opera, SeaMonkey, etc. but has the same problem there. Sometimes the login page on Hotmail loads up, but logging in doesn't produce any response. In Facebook again, sometimes the login page loads, but doesn't work. In SeaMonkey, sometimes logging in to Facebook does proceed to the home page, but then no other links work. I have tried googling, but no satisfactory solution showed up. Suggestions included clearing the cache/cookies (no effect & in any case multiple browsers makes this unlikely), changing DNS servers (tried both MTNL & OpenDNS, and in any case they're the same servers as set under Windows), and even checking the Java install (I really doubt MS uses Java on the Hotmail page, but I tried it anyway). Ping times of both sites seem normal. Any further lines of inquiry would be appreciated. Thanks, Chirag Wazir http://chirag.freeshell.org

Hello, Are you frustrated with network setups in KDE? Do you spend long hours trying to figure out just how to get your network device up in KDE? Are you fed up with knetwork-manager not displaying your network devices? Have you spent sleepless nights trying to figure out knetwork-manager but met with no success due to unavailability of proper configuration files? Well! Don't fret, don't fume, don't bang your head on the wall, just throw out knetworkmanager and install wicd. Reboot your system and you will get a network icon in the system tray. On opening its window your devices will be listed. Next to each device, on the left is a tiny arrow button that almost gets unnoticed but clicking on that arrow will drop down details for setting up each device, wired or wireless. For wpa wireless setup, in the preferences section select the correct wireless driver. If one doesen't work, try all others till your connection gets established. In my Acer Travelmate 2428, for Lenny, the Intel 2200 device used the ipw2200 driver with a manually added firmware but in wicd, instead of 'ipw', I had to use 'wext' to get proper authenticaton, so once you set your passphrase and encryption type (wep, wpa, ....) try out all drivers if the default does not work. -- Regards, Rony. MySQL encrypted passwords..

Hi Guys, I am working on an application which needs to connect to MySQL database for updating/insertion etc. For the application to pickup the username/password I've created a config file somewhere on the system which looks like this: <snip> [mysqld] user=root password=mypassword port=3306 </snip> Problem is that this file can be read by root on that server and my password pretty much known to anyone who has root access. Is there anyway I can keep the password in encrypted format and still connect to mysql database? . Just to give an example of what I am looking at, in openldap you can generate a password in encrypted format using slappasswd -t {MD5} -s mypassword and store it in your slapd.conf file. Even if someone does get access to slapd.conf, still s/he cannot decrypt the password very easily. Please note that I cannot hard code the password into my application, since the root password for MySQL is subject to change without notice to me. TIA, Chiragz

Hello, Is there anywhere I can get a database of the present candidates standing for elections? I tried the Election Commission website (http://eci.nic.in) but they do not have a download. All that exists there is a .net form with postbacks, and it looks like a pain to scrape. IBN does have some data, but it seems incomplete with a lot of parties and candidates missing. One of our supporters is advising a university in connection with finalizing the syllabus for their courses. Currently, their syllabus includes oracle/windows/DotNET/SQL 2005 and other proprietary products/technologies. hey, I have been trying to get this webcam to work on ubuntu though it gets detected, the video is not getting captured i have been using cheese to do that any help on this would be great. Hi All, As the subject of this post shows, I'm using Ubuntu Linux 8.04 / 8.10 on which I've connected HP LaserJet P1007 printer with the USB port. The printer is getting detected in the system but when I shoot any document to the printer, the prints does not printed on the printer. The documents get spooled out of the system & shows that, it is printed successfully on the printer, but it is not printed If I connect another USB printer like HP LaserJet 3005 on the same system, then it can print on that printer( on 3005). If the same printer (LaserJet P1007) I connect to the windows xp system, the printer works properly giving all the prints. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sameer Shinde. Now my old folks are left without Internet. So I'm thinking of adding a redundant line. They dont require anything fancy - a volume based plan and a low latency connection ( for VoIP ) would be required at the very least. Reliance has cabling but I was burnt the last time I used their services. They're supposed to have improved since then but I dont want to fall into *that* trap once again. Dear All, The political support for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) continues to increase. The CPI(M) manifesto released on the 16th of March calls for the promotion of FOSS. The manifesto can be accessed at http://www.cpim.org/manifesto.pdf Following are some of the highlights of the policy - - Promoting FOSS and other such new technologies, which are free from monopoly ownership through copyrights or patents; - Revamping the functioning of the Patent offices to ensure strict adherence to the Indian Patent Act; Stop training and orientation of Indian Patent office personnel by the US and European Patent offices These above measures are critical to support the public education system, local economy and the knowledge commons and counter neo-liberal pressures that aim to privatize the public information/knowledge domain. With key parties from both the left and the right end of the political spectrum endorsing FOSS, the Congress is left as the only major national party which is yet to formally take a position on FOSS. If not, there could be permission problems in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. The ssh daemon doesn't allow using that file if it is not well protected from other users. Try the following (assuming the user to be B) on the server where sshd is running: chmod 750 ~/.ssh/ chown B.root ~/.ssh/ chmod 640 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys chown B.root ~/.ssh/authorized_keys As suggested in other posts, expect is needed to write scripts using interactive programs like telnet and ftp. Debian install query

I finally decided to ditch Kubuntu due to multile problems. I tried Mandriva and was completely floored by the install progress. It offered me the option of using ndiswrapper for my wifi card right during the install and the card came up automatically after the install. Clean interface. But I don't want to start a new learning curve right now. But it's definitely going into a vmware vm soon. So back to good old debian. First I got the netinst cd and then tried the debain-kde cd. So far so good. It asked for the isl3886 firmware from a new medium but that was that. The wifi card did not work after the install. Not debian's fault because I haven't been able to get the card working with anythng but ndiswrapper. Even though this was a 'full' cd, the install insisted on downloading a hell of a lot of files (more than 50 or so). Then after the full install was over and I had rebooted and ran apt-update and apt-get upgrade, it wanted to delete almost 40 files using apt-get auto-remove. If I try to install without using a net mirror, the sources.list is bare except for the cdrom line. Now I want to install debian on another machine at a different location. Seeing as how I've already dowloaded all these files on one machine, how can I use this to avoid downloading them again for the second install. What are the options available ? What I was thinking is install without a net mirror, and then copy over the sources.list and the contents of /var/cache/apt/archives to the new machine and then run apt-get update and upgrade. The second machine is at my clinic and I cannot afford to mess with it too much. Many times flamers (we know who you are) think nothing of wasting public resources, others' time, and polluting public forums with things best not said. Since their statements are not strictly on the foul side of the moderation guidelines, IMO, they cannot be blocked from the list. In any case that's a dangerous trend. So what do you and I do? Do we put up with their tasteless emails, do we allow them to spread their ill cheer to us across the pipes? There is still something we can do. It's called cold treatment. Flamers are usually after recognition and attention. (Begin fictionalised quote) "I'm important! I can string a sentence together! I've been ignored all my life! YOU CAN'T IGNORE ME NO MORE! I CAN WIN TOO! YES I CAN! NO, REALLY! Here-- no, don't look away! Hey, LOOK AT ME! I have my worth, really! If you won't admire me, I'll FLAME YOU! I'm cool! I'm not worthless, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not! LOOOOOOK AT ME, WOOOOOAAAAAAH!" (End fictional quote) Flamers usually self-destruct if we give them the cold treatment. This is well-known, though it takes time. Even hardened prisoners usually come quiet at the prospect of solitary confinement. These flamers aren't evil. Let us isolate them. Let them shout their inanities to silence. They need a captive audience. But we refuse to be captive. Let us deny them the attention they crave, and watch them shrivel and shrink away. All we need is to stick to it.

use of expletives on the FOSS list

I do not know the persons in a recent flamewar, one of whom called the other an 'asshole' and the other, who apparently because of extreme vituperativeness in another flamewar has been blocked from the list. So, purely because of the use of the expletive, I also vote in favour of expelling the member who used it from the linuxers list. No matter who you are, no matter how powerful you are in the little Indian FOSS frogpond, you cannot get away with something like this or, can you? Guess that depends on the forum. And even usually dormant members do no like to get cusswords in their mailbox. If others too believe in the one person one vote principle, they should vote in this matter. Using Clive to convert youtube videos to audio mp3

Hello, After attending Rajeev's video conferencing demo at Directi, I was inspired to try out new ways to use clive. Clive is a utility to download youtube videos and convert them using ffmpeg to mp4 videos to play in the popular players. The simple way to use clive is 'clive video_url' in the terminal. This results in an mp4 video getting stored in the current directory in which clive is run. However I wanted to convert the live videos to audio mp3 only. On the net there is no mention of how to use clive to do it. The man page of clive has one option '-w' to automatically write a config file which can then be edited. Run 'clive -w' to create this file. The file is created in your home directory under .clive/config. Now edit this config file and make 2 changes. 1) ## Path to the ffmpeg program (e.g. "/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg -y -i %i %o") path_ffmpeg="/usr/bin/ffmpeg -y -i %i %o" Uncomment the path_ffmpeg line to tell clive about the location of ffmpeg ( This is important ) 2) ## Uncomment to re-encode to FORMAT ("mpg", "avi", ..) ## Requires also path_ffmpeg reencode_format="mp3" Uncomment the reencode line and add mp3 in the "" quotes. This was a blind shot that worked. Clive is mainly a video utility. Save the file and now simply run 'clive video_url' and you first get the video.mp4 file. As soon as it is downloaded clive shows a message that it is converting it to video.mp4.mp3 Thats all. Your mp3 is ready to rock. As I had earlier downoaded only mp4 videos, I was looking for a way to use ffmpeg to convert them to mp3. From the man page options the following command was assembled using trial and error and it works. 'ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -acodec mp3 -ab 160k video.mp3' The -i specifies the input file, -acodec specifies the audio output codec and -ab sets the audio bit rate in bits/sec. -- Regards, Rony. External Proxy usage on squid.

Hi, We have a squid server running which looks into user access. Now there are users who would use a webproxy or a external proxy to bypass this restriction. Is there a way to stop them. One rule is to figure out all the proxy sites and address and feed them to blocked sites but that process doesn't look good and easy manageable. [Hardware] How much is too much?

Hello, I am curious to know how many client machines can the MTNL triband routers practically support in a LAN in order to give decent internet connectivity to all? There is a LAN network where there are around 7 machines using static ips (not LInux) and the triband router is the gateway machine also attached to the LAN. When connected directly to a machine the internet connectivity is good but when all machines are up internet takes a long time to resolve and speeds are in bursts. When it keeps searching for the web page or there is no connectivity, one cannot even log into the router. Pinging the router is fine. The router too has been replaced by MTNL. The entire setup is spread across 4 floors. Initially the LAN wiring was suspected but the crimping of the router cable was done again and otherwise, internal file sharing works perfectly. I am suspecting that the router gets overloaded trying to NAT so many requests, given its tiny architecture. Should I install a separate router to this LAN? Are the separate routers designed to handle large NAT traffic? I want to avoid holding up one machine for internet sharing. Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! No Viruses No Spyware Only Freedom.

May be a couple of Gigs of data transfer per month (will have photo gallery), and will need around a Gig of disk space for the time being. -- God is a comedian playing to an audience too afraid to laugh.

Login page of HDFCSec not opening

Hi! For the past few days, I'm not being able to access the login page of my online stock trading website which is www.hdfcsec.com The login page url is https://trade.hdfcsec.com When I click on the login button on the main site, the login page tries to open but the status bar keeps showing "Connected to trade.hdfcsec.com..." indefinitely but the page does not loads up. I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.17 under Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn) on my laptop and Firefox 3 under Fedora Core 10 on my desktop. Both machines are connected to the internet through bsnl dataone broadband connection and I'm using Netgear DG834G adsl modem-cum-router in dhcp mode. The desktop is connected through ethernet and the laptop connects on wireless. I tried accessing the page from Firefox/IE runnning under Vista on my laptop but I'm facing the same problem there as well. I tried accessing the login page from one of my friend's machine who's got the same broadband connection but a different modem (huawei smartx882 connected via ethernet with static ip setup) with ubuntu 8.04 installed on his machine and the page opens just fine at his place using Firefox/Opera.
