Problem: In open suse system mousepad of laptop does not work?

Hello to all, I have faced two problem using OpenSuse in my one of the friends laptop. When i boot in open suse mouse pad does not support, it does not work. While the same thing just for checking what is the real problem may be, I tried to boot in Windows, and it support, it works. Second problem is Linux allows windows partition to mount, read write data in that partitions. Using openSuse i tried to use windows "ntfs" filesystem partion, which before do not allow mounting partition, but after using umonunt and remounting technique it allow to mount. I can list the data from that partition but not allow to create folder or edit data? Error: Permission Denied, Even i change to root as sudo user giving the same problem. Please give me solution!!!! Then how do we find which hard disk had failed from the several hard disk in the server remotely. we need to hav certain command for this in linux. in IBM AIX there is certain command but in linux i dont't know. does any 1 know this than plz reply. FOSS for enabling collective decision making /voting

Hi Dinesh, Saw your blog entry on electoral reforms. Is there any FOSS software which will help the voting process? I think we really need such enabling tools/ category of FOSS softwares. Once it becomes easy and convenient to vote, and it is ingrained as a habit from childhood, maybe some of your concerns will be addressed and India will become a REAL democracy rather than a SHAM one it is at present. The software would fulfill a need in myriad applications e.g. in 1 Housing societies AGMs 2 Company/stockholders Annual General Meetings 3 in panchayats 4 in classrooms 5 in companies, schools, adventure groups, theater audiences, neighbourhood meetings, in ngos etc etc --i.e. wherever collective decision making is required. I tried searching on http://directory.fsf.org and other places but have yet to find such a software. Maybe somebody will make it someday Almost all Swiss citizens participate in voting on important issues thru the sms/mobile route and they vote atleast once a month since it is so convenient. Kubuntu 8.10 on Acer Aspire One (AAO) [Installation Notes]

Hello, Before attempting Kubuntu 8.10, the AAO was tried out with Kubuntu 8.04 using a regular external HDD controller connected to a Mosher Bayer DVD R/W. It would keep stopping at the 'initramfs' prompt. Then I tried creating a USB LiveCD in my pen drive but that was not successfull in booting properly. Then the Kubuntu 8.10 CD ( which did not boot till the desktop in my Intel 845 GEBV2 PC) was tried out and it was able to boot into the live desktop on the AAO. My pre-installation worry was the single partition already installed with XP Home and the hidden rescue partition getting knocked out. I wanted dual boot. However fdisk -l showed that the rescue partition was the first one and the rest of the disk was XP. During Kubuntu 8.10's installation, in the partitioning section, there was already an option of dividing the XP partition into 50% XP and 50% Ubuntu. Installlation went smoothly and did not damage the XP pre-installed. On booting into XP after installing Kubuntu, Windows detected a file system error and went into automatic scandisk ( don't stop that process ). Then it automatically rebooted and went on to boot normally and all was well. Kubuntu 8.10 detected everything properly except the wireless LAN. The wired LAN kept going on/off even after upgrading all packages. However after a few reboots it appeared to take the wired connection properly. The wireless issue is simple to resolve by following instructions given in this site https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne110L#WLan For the webcam this site https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne talks about 'luvcview'. It works fine and has many detailed settings. Its buttons are tiny but anyway results are good. Don't follow the wireless instructions given here. Go to the earlier link for 8.10. I haven't tried the card slots as I don't have any such cards. However the website has some information on it. A word of caution. Don't mess with the wireless on/off switch on the front side of the AAO. It disables the wireless well but getting it back was next to impossible. Repeated attempts to bring it to life failed. In XP I would get the on-screen display for enable and disable but no sign of the hardware itself. Finally I shut down the system and gave the switch some exercise. That brought it back to life. Whew! Anyway this netbook and Kubuntu 8.10 are like fish and water. Installation with live partitioning is fully automatic. Kubuntu on Acer Aspire One (AAO)

Hello, I am trying to boot a live Kubuntu 8.04 ( KDE 3 as well as 4 ) CD into the Aspire One with XP Home pre-loaded but the boot stops at an initramfs prompt. There is an external HDD adapter that is plugged into the brand new Moser Bayer IDE DVD R/W and this combination was able to read media in Debian Etch's desktop, just like plugging in a pen drive. In the AAO, on hitting F12, the third option is the USB DVD drive and I get the initial boot options. After selecting the default live option, the boot process moves up to the initial part and then stops at the initramfs prompt. I believe this is due to some driver issue. Has anyone installed Kubuntu 8.04 on this netbook? The sites on google mostly mention Ubuntu 8.10 for this netbook so I will be downloading the Kubuntu 8.10 ISO. adsl model problem

Hi, I have a BSNL internet connection. When i am using azureus, after some time, my download stops, it again starts & does this couple of times. Every time, firestarter indicates a blocked connection. If i check the firestarter for blocked connections, i see this (not in any order): Port Source Protocol Service 57084 192.168.1.1 ICMP Unknown 4024 192.168.1.1 ICMP Unknown 62159 192.168.1.1 ICMP Unknown I tried to closely monitor this thing, as far i can tell, when ever this happens, download speed goes to 0 & then again increases. But some times i have to reset the modem. I am using Ubuntu 8.04. I have checked my pc at grc.com (i went through http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510812) It shows my pc as passed the test. Installation Problem !

[Commercial -- well, not really] An Invitation

Hi, Being involved with linux now for a long time, I have always researched the level of linux compatibility before buying any new hardware. I recently needed to buy a cheap wireless USB adapter (cheap because, i think i'd probably use it only a couple months before my laptop's bmc4310 wireless card is nicely supported -- ehe, that's an entirely different topic -- no, i have not got it to work on Fedora 10). Well, this didn't turn out as easy as I expected. Sure, 90% USB wireless cards just work with linux, but what if I chose a random one and it turns out to be from that 10%, so, I began researching. Unfortunately, a lot of 'cheap' wireless cards, don't come with tech. specs, so you have no clue what chipset the card is based on. For example looking at http://tinyurl.com/6p8tc3 (ebay.com search URL), I didn't know what to buy. I would have to research each of those individually, eliminating by price. Anyways, long story short, I got frustrated with the fact that I have to do this 'research' every time I need some new hardware, so, I thought of setting this up: http://tuxcompatible.com This is a 'classifieds' site where people looking for linux compatible hardware (/software/periperals/devices/services ..etc), can shorten or eliminate the research step. I would like to invite hardware vendors (or request you to invite those hardware vendors you know) who know the linux compatibility of devices they sell, to create their listings here. Hi, Firstly, thanks all, for the comments about the site (I really appreciate it) and also about the suggestions on making bmc4310 work. I am sorry, I wasn't too clear about that bit, I should have said haven't got it working in my setup yet -- which means with WAP-PSK support. Right now, I am using the broadcom's (proprietory with binary blob) wl module[1] which works only in open networks (I have not tried WEP). Even using the windows driver with ndiswrapper works with just open and WEP enabled networks, not with WAP-PSK ...anyways, like I said, native upstream kernel support will come in a couple of months[2]. linux hardware shop in Mumbai, Pune

Hi, I have been telling a lot of people about ubuntu/linux and its advantages over windows etc in most cases. But the stumbling block that I find is knowing or recommending a one stop shop for all sorts of hardware which is linux compatible. In particular small irritating stuff like memory card readers, all in one printers, webcams and similar stuff. Can anybody here tell whether such an intelligent hardware vendor been found yet in Mumbai or Pune? The advantages in the niche linux market to such a vendor are enormous and will help the linux movement too as technology adoption will be hassle free. Linux installation problems in Thosiba satelite A305-6858

Hi All, I am getting few errors while installing centos 5.2 in my thosiba laptop (satelite A305-6858). I have search the net for solutions but couldn't get one. I have tried several times but no use..i get these erros Kernal panic --not-syncing -Fatal exception and there is some memory crash error.. In my laptop i have 4GB of ram but in the windows properties it is showing 2.99 GB. Regards, Shishu

Comet Media Foundation are carrying out a short term project whose purpose is carry out a study of the security and legal aspects of running a telecentre or cyber cafe and to convert this information into study and reference materials that can be used by telecentre operators and their staff to meet regulatory requirements, protect themselves and help their customers in the current security scenario. This need is felt due to risks to telecentres and users as well as legal liabilities faced by the operators in this regard. This is a good opportunity for a curriculum developer to gain hands-on experience in creating content to fit a context. The study involves designing a questionnaire, and meeting with 10 urban and rural telecente operators and about forty users of different profiles. Detailed interviews will need to be scheduled and conducted with a total of about 25 persons. The coordinator would also have to interact with external experts - a lawyer, cyber security expert, research associates, instructional design consultant, visual designer and coder as well as with the project partner who would function as a community leader among telecentre operators. With the help of these resource persons, we will convert the inputs into six training sessions of about 1-2 hours each. The coordinator and team members will then run two pilot workshops to test the materials with a target audience. The feedback from these sessions will be used to refine the content and methodology as required. In parallel, all activities will be documented and converted into a final report by the end of January, 2009. We are looking for a young person with at least one year of social research experience with a fair understanding of ICTs (Information & Communication Technologies) and fluency in Marathi, English and Hindi who can function independently in the field against tight deadlines and resource constraints. S/he must be based in Mumbai and familiar with nearby areas. Good relationship skills, communication (oral and written) and analytical skills are essential. Remuneration: A consolidated salary of Rs. 15,000 per month will be paid for a maximum of three months. Travel and related expenses will be reimbursed as per norms. Red Hat is looking for an experienced engineer with a strong technical background to work on software engineering for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The position requires working on system internals including creating tooling related to Red Hat Enterprise Linux system internals. Proficiency in creating and using APIs. Understanding of system ABI and standards are required as part of the role. Capable of working with upstream Open Source projects and building community around tools created. The ayttm team is proposing a workout at foss.in to accelerate the development pace of ayttm. We're actively looking for new developers to join the team. All currently active developers are from India, and more would be better.
