No audio on Kubuntu with Acer Aspire One

Hi, I'm new to Linux and have recently purchased an Acer Aspire One and loaded Kubuntu onto it. I find that I get no audio at all. Followed instructions at http://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne . However, after doing all the tweaks, found that it requires Alsa 1.0.17. Tried downloading Alsa 1.0.17 and compiling it. visiting Mumbai and OLPC

Hello Linuxers, I am visiting from San Francisco on vacation. I have been working with the One Laptop per Child project in volunteer capacity for a few years now. I organize and host meetings for the OLPC San Francisco group. Most of my research revolves around FOSS as innovation, and sustainable IT infrastructures. Projects I've worked with: Ubuntu, Fedora, Asterisk, OpenMoko, Maemo, Nocat, Jabber, Moodle, Drupal, etc. I was referred to this group by someone, so this is a shot in the dark :-) I am not sure if any of you are involved in OLPC efforts both in India and worldwide. Here are a few basic facts: The OLPC project is based largely on Fedora (7 and 9) and runs on XO laptops that are powered by a 433MHz x86 Geode processor with 256 MB RAM. The laptop itself consumes a max of 8 watts. There are approx 600,000 OLPC XO laptops in the field with children worldwide - the next generation - with 55,000 laptops shipping out each month. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? ;-) I will be in Mumbai until the 26th. If there is any interest, I'd be happy to meet/present on the project, its approach, the role of FOSS, etc. Ping me on or offlist. Most of the deployment reports are up on http://wiki.laptop.org/ Look for Peru, Uruguay, Mongolia, etc. A page with deployment details are up at What's needed is awareness that the laptop is not just another cheap laptop. There is a complete learning philosophy that underlies the project, where it allows the XO to be a simple laptop to surf the web, read e-books, etc. but can also switch over into an overdrive of sorts and become a collaborative platform. For instance you can use a word processor on two XOs and write a letter together, in real time. Think of it as an IM within a word processor type deal. Additionally, you can do this without being on the Internet, because the XOs talk to each other over Wi-Fi in a mesh or peer-to-peer mode. The Wi-Fi usually works across 700+ feet. We've run links across 2000 feet in San Francisco, and a guy in Australia has run links across 2km. It is difficult to explain these features to grown-ups who are conditioned to computers; they've never seen anything like it. Children are a lot more receptive. In their minds, everything is new and discoverable. In my professional opinion, this project is perhaps one of the most innovative IT projects *ever*. The best part is that a good proportion of its success relies on communities and contributors. Is this model available in Mumbai? If so, anyone had a look at it, price etc? I have seen a model in Dubai (8.9" dispay, 512MB RAM, 120HDD, V7 1.2GHz, 1.3 Megapixel Webcam) retailing for about AED 1550 (+100 AED for 1GB RAM upgrade). The OS is Novell/SuSE Linux desktop. The keyboard is larger (and IMO more useable) compared to Acer One and the new ASUS EEEpc. The downside is that the warranty on units sold in Dubai is not valid in India. -- Arun Khan

accounting related softwares in linux

Could anybody here comment on kalculate.com and how it is when compared to Tally in terms of standard features, bugs, todolists, user feedback? Also cometmedia.org's Krishnakant Mane has been making a python equivalent for customising gnucash to do accounting work for small businesses/organisations. Anybody knows how these softwares are and are there any independent critics of the same who can tell the state of progress/development. Making linux favorable for desktop users, specially small organisations means there must be an accounting package relevant to India. The most resource constrained organisations are schools and colleges, training institutions etc but edubuntu, ltsp.org, moodle etc are hardly mentioned on most of our LINUX websites. Need some help with sms related project

Hello, Im a comp sci student from Mumbai . I need some help with regards to a project im planning to do . The project involves an application on the server side which records orders made by a user . A user can send his order details by sending an sms to a particular number . When the order is received, the system sends a confirmation sms back to the user. I indend to develop the backend system on Linux platform using PHP . But i have no idea as to how the sms communication part would work . I have heard of some open source sms gateway packages like Kannel, but dont have exact idea of how it can be applied in the above scenario . Will this involve purchasing a service from some wireless operator ? . Any helps or tips as to how the above system can be implemented would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

For those who fear unwanted spaces sneaking in-between the commands, GUI based file manager is preferred. This is one of the case where I suggest using a GUI tool while working on GNU/Linux platform. Konqueror, Nautilus etc. are good tools to remove selected files and directories from the file system. If Xwindow is not installed on the system, then mc can be used instead. They also allow recovery of deleted files as deletion usually means automagically moving them to your trash folder. Raghu

Suggestions needed for Wireless Router

Hi, I need a wireless router for network setup at my home. Basically for internet connectivity for 2 laptops and my desktop and for occasional other extra devices with wifi capabilities if and when required. Now what I want to know is - what would be good wifi router which could work across a 2 BHK flat and also work when the laptop/device is in an opposite flat, separated just by a passage and walls. The passage width is not more than couple of meters. I am looking at this [1] model, any suggestions? Thanks in advance. By analyzing the change sets in each file and then merging such sections from older file-set to the working one, we can figure out when keyboard settings break. keyboard freezes in one session in kde

hi, I have a mandriva spring 2008 box with kde which has 3 users. From today, for one of the users the keyboard does not work after entering kde, but for the other users it works perfectly. hi i have installed Ubuntu 8.041 LTS Desktop, then i installed Wine to install some windows based apps, i have installed windows based apps, but they are not launching..some error.. so i want to uninstall them and re-install, them, but i dont know how to *un install* those windows apps.. It would be more simpler to simply install virtualbox from your repos and boot the ISOs live into the virtual window.
