report on the stake holders meeting

I attended the stake holders meeting in Mumbai at the Patent's office. The room was full of people, more than 80 people attended the meet. Of which about 30 were interested in the software issue. the rest of them are interested mostly in bioinformatics, chemical processes etc. What gave me solace is that this is not an attempt to modify the law. So, status quo exists. software patents per se are not possible in India. However. what the office is doing is it prepared a draft of a Manual helping the inventors in how to apply for a patent. In that manual, there is an attempt to suggest how to exploit the 'per se' and apply for software patents in combination with hardware. Due to several questions on this issue raised by several of us, and also due to written feedback submitted by quite a few others in Delhi meet, they are organizing a stake holders meeting in Bangalore later (in the coming three to four months period) where they are going to settle all the doubts and listen all the points of view. The date of bangalore meeting is not yet announced. Meanwhile, chennai and kolkatta meetings are still going to be held before the bangalore meeting. It is a good idea to send our supporters to both these places, so that the officers must see that there is sufficient opposition to this manipulation. Nagarjuna

[OT] Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapters - product suggestion

For power, my network device is PoE capable and also has a 12V/1A DC in. There are no power outlets near the device. Also, the ethernet switch does not have any PoE ports. I am looking for an adapter, that sits in the closet alongside the ethernet switch, with input a) Jack for DC12V/1A in, b) RJ45 LAN in (from switch), and output A) RJ45 LAN out (ethernet+dc power). wifi card configuration help needed....

hey guys, I am trying to configure an atheros AR5007EG wifi card on fc8 with kernel version 2.6.25.11-60.fc8 i install it using yum install madwifi* it got install properly without any errors... but when i do ifconfig -a it doesnt show me any wifi interface i did modprobe ath_pci its shows me modules installed ... so i went through madwifi how-to ...there they have mention steps in to create interface but those steps dont work here is what i get:- # wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device #wlanconfig ath0 destroy wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device what those these means??? does anybody has configured this chipset on fc8 well i am configuring it on my acer laptop (Aspire 5053) Regards Advait Raut

Hi All, Around 2-3 Years back I handed over a "EduMorphix" CD to a kid. Recently I was surprised to find her using it even till date. I noticed that most of the applications on it are quite old compared with the versions that my daughter plays with. I want to give her a Live-CD with updated software since I cannot install anything on her dad's machine. Unfortunately EduMorphix does not exists anymore. EduMorphix was just perfect, I dont know why they decided to dis-continue it. Freeduc (http://www.ofset.org/freeduc-cd) is not updated in a long time either There is no Live CD for edubuntu. I am looking for any distibution including at least "TuxPaint", "TuxMath" and "gCompris". Can someone suggest a live CD focused on Education? Regards Aseem Hi, You can make your own LiveCD with whichever packages you need. You can remove whatever you don't need. Most distros have an option of making a custom LiveCD. How much time it takes depends on the kind of customization your looking for. On a Ubuntu / Kubuntu based system , you can use remastersys or reconstructor. http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu-linux-mint-livecd-with-remastersys Thats a how-to on remastersys to get you started. The only thing to remember is that remastersys will automatically include all packages installed on your system into the custom distribution. So its best to use it on a new install. That will prevent installation of unrequired software. Here is the link for Reconstructor : http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/ This is a good tool as well. Has some more customizations. The best way is to make a Live Distro from scratch. That way you can keep it quite trim by removing all unnecessary packages. You can also have a different window manager if you want to keep it really small. There are also tools to customize fedora , knoppix, slax , DSL etc. Another tool worth mentioning is Insta Linux http://www.instalinux.com/ Its a online app where u can choose what apps you want. It generates a custom cd for you on the fly which you have 24 hours to download / distribute. The avaiable applications are quite limited though. Regards, Sameep

Its not reall a Live CD anymore. Its more like a Live DVD. Anyhow, I don't plan to reduce any educational packages. I'l see what other things I can get rid off. Regards, Sameep

Need Live CD Focused on "Education"

Hi All, Around 2-3 Years back I handed over a "EduMorphix" CD to a kid. Recently I was surprised to find her using it even till date. I noticed that most of the applications on it are quite old compared with the versions that my daughter plays with. I want to give her a Live-CD with updated software since I cannot install anything on her dad's machine. Unfortunately EduMorphix does not exists anymore. EduMorphix was just perfect, I dont know why they decided to dis-continue it. Freeduc (http://www.ofset.org/freeduc-cd) is not updated in a long time either There is no Live CD for edubuntu. Instead of cooking up an encryption scheme yourself, use ssh for all remote work. Remember to disable password based logins on remote systems. Choose key based login instead. You need to create your own private-public key pair for this purpose. There are lots of documents on the Net on how to do it. Usually the standard configuration files which come with binary packages in various Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuSE etc.) are secure enough to be used on production systems. But still it makes sense to read and understand them before implementation. Remember to encrypt your ssh private key. Never leave it on the disk in raw form unless you have some compelling reasons to do so. Sometimes using passphrase based encryption is not feasible at all, like to auto-execute some commands on remote system when human operator is not present in front of the terminal to supply it. In such cases, the private key is kept on the disk in its raw form. I am assuming that your are present in front of the terminal from where your program is fired. This will allow you to supply the passphase on demand. If your program is fired multiple times in a session or connects to multiple systems in a session then these password prompts might become annoying. In such cases, consider using the utility ssh-add. It takes your passphrase while starting up and keeps it in the memory for on demand supply. Thus you can supply the passphrase once and then run your program without supplying it again. But remember to run "ssh-add -D" when all your ssh related work is over. > Can any one please advice or guide me how to achieve this > kind of encryption. If you mean a custom encryption scheme here, I would say that cooking up such a scheme is always a bad idea. It requires a lot of mathematical skills to develop a good encryption scheme. In 2005, I was involved in the Patent Amendment Act 2005 and on behalf of Red Hat, we had made representations to policy makers on why software patents are bad for the Indian software industry. At that time, Lawrence Liang and Prashanth Iyengar of the Alternative Law Forum had done a fantastic job of putting together a position paper on this issue virtually overnight. Happily, our lobbying was successful and software was kept out of the Amendment. What makes me hopping mad is that the Draft Manual seeks to bring in through the backdoor, something that was explicitly rejected by the Indian parliament. To say the very least, this is a very dubious practice. Interestingly, Infosys and TCS are in favor of software patents. Those who followed the OOXML fight on this blog would know that both these organizations had voted in favor of Microsoft's OOXML proposal. encryption of password

Hello Every one, I am having one shell / perl script , through which i am doing all my server maintainance work like cleaning old logs etc. Script is running fine without any issues. But i am remotly login to almost 20 servers through this script and doing my stuffs for which i have to hardcode my user name and password (only one) in same scritp which i feel is scurity thread. Is there any way to encrypt my password in the same script which system or script can understande but when any one else open my script not able to read that password line. Hi, I use an eclipse plugin called Mylyn [1]. Mylyn allows me to group my work into tasks (integrates with things like Bugzilla, trac etc.)[2]. The best thing that Mylyn provides is that it creates separate contexts for each of these tasks. The context influences what I see in a particular eclipse view. So for example, in the file explorer view in eclipse, I only see files that I have changed while working in this context. Additionally it also influences the auto suggest options. The context feature works great when you have to frequenly switch between tasks. It allows you to get back into the mode for solving a particular task. I was wondering if something similar for the shell would be useful. It could for example alter the history to only have the commands that you used in the context of working on a paritcular task. It could maybe even set up env accordingly. PC hangs on md5sum DVD.ISO

Hello, Off late I am having problems with downloaded DVD isos. Earlier I have downloaded 4 Debian DVD isos as well as the Etch Updates DVD iso and all their md5sum results were fine. Now I find that the Sabayon as well as the Debian DVD1 isos throw an 'Input/Output Error' and after that the link between the system and my HDD appears to be lost as no command is accepted and the system as well as the display goes for a toss.
