_simple_ checkbook balancing program

I am looking for a _simple_ checkbook balancing program. All I need is to be able to enter my debits and credits and be able to print it out to give it to my CA. The ability to print (ideally directly) is essential. Incrementing check numbers would be nice too. The ability to import a qif file is a plus point but not absolutely essential. Previously I used gacc w/ kubuntu 6.04 (and fedora -- I forget which version). This was the perfect solution. Unfortunately after upgrading to kubuntu 7.04 (and 8.04) gacc does not work. What happens is that though the program opens, there is no text in the menu bar or the status bar. The same is the trouble with cbtracker. Here again, the program starts up but I run up against this problem of no text in the menu or status bar. I wrote to the author and he suggested that it could be a problem with the gtk theme and maybe changing the gtk theme might help. Google also gave a similar answer but for older versions of kubuntu. The software that helped in these cases is no longer available for kubuntu 7.x or 8.x. I installed _all_the gtk-themes available. None helped. Asking on the kubuntu list turned up exactly zero answers :(. Okay so back to google. I found pycheckbook but it messes up the dates when it imports a qif file. All the dates are changed to the present date. Also, it won't print directly. You need to export to text then open in vim or OOo and more often than not the formatting is screwed up. I also found chkbk. Just a shell script but no export or printing support that I could find. Next was cbb. Again no direct printing possible. Then I looked at brinance. A cli program that takes a cli parameter everytime you run it. Depends upon Brinance.pm -- a perl module that the author accepts is not very perl-ish and hence may give different results. I looked at kmymoney, gnucash, buddi. Kmymoney, nicely integrates with kde, imports qif files correctly after a bit of fiddling. But it won't let me print just a record of my transcations. Too much shoo sha for my taste (or even need). I tried gnucash but it is greatly overkill. Buddi won't import _anything_ :( . Maybe I'm missing something but the import and export commands are greyed out. I intend taking a look a avsap but it too seems to be a full fledged accounting package. so what do I do now ? suggestions welcome. regards, Sharukh. -- Dr. Sharukh K R Pavri. Homoeopath, Linuxer. OLSR is layer 3. Well, so no money is needed to switch to olsr. If people start playing with OLSR now, I have heard that a computer notebook from HCL costs $ 250 ---- so can cheap notebooks be enabled for OLSR. Hi, There are lots of technical questions and answers which are being answered on this list. Can you make this list a searchable list (instead of merely downloading the zipped files) or put it on yahoo groups (viewable by everybody ----- how does one prevent SPAM) or google groups so everybody can view it. Also, note that the OLPC XO notebook with built-in OLSR is available in Nepal for $ 125. I had got Microsoft Word and Excel and powerpoint to work under WINE on Kubuntu LINUX but then again it became non-workable the next day. I can't get Tally to connect properly under WINE. Log synaptic commands

An enterprising group has taken on a radical approach in attracting users to Linux: switch a whole town! Dubbed "Lindependence 2008" (a.k.a. LIN08), this event strives to switch citizens in Felton, Calif., for at least a week from Microsoft Windows to Linux. The initiative, loosely led by Ken Starks in Austin, Texas, and Larry Cafiero in Felton, has taken the idea of introducing normal computer users to Linux to screaming heights. As part of this project IT for Change seeks to focus on ?FLOSS and the public sector?, and will study the role of public sector agencies in procuring, organizing and stimulating production of FOSS, including using FLOSS for public administration, and sharing of FLOSS applications among public sector bodies. We specifically aim to understand; (1) the context of, and requirements for, a wide scale deployment and use of FLOSS within the public sector agencies in India, (2) the issues and challenges involved in building an ecology for the development of such FLOSS and applications that have the most development and governmental uses, and, (3)the issues and challenges in fostering sharing software in the public sector. Understanding such techno-social as well as social factors would be useful to understand,conceptualize and design programs that would further the use of FLOSS in these sectors. Our activities in the initial phase of this project will include - 1. Collection and analysis of data on government policies on FOSS and open standards, and on FOSS implementation in Indian public sector 2. A study on the issues of perceptions regarding software choices within the public sector 3. wlan to lan to internet

I have a machine w/ kubuntu w/ a wlan0 (runing w/ ndiswrapper) connecting to the net via braodband modem. I now want to connect my laptop to the net thru the broadband modem via the wifi. I followed this link: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-274790-highlight-adhoc+wireless.html I managed to get the laptop talking to the kubuntu machine and I can even browse the net on the laptop. The problem is that I have lost internet connectivity on the kubuntu machine :( . No ping, no web access, zilch. I have the follwoing setup: modem <-> (pub.lic.I.P) PC <-> wifi (192.168.1.202) <-> (192.168.1.204) laptop I have made the requisite changes in the commands shown on this page. where is the problem ? do I need any changes to this line ? route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 10.0.1.1 I've changed it to route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 192.168.1.202 regards, Sharukh -- Dr. Sharukh K. [review] Sparc systems gps data logger gdl-3204

Hi, I recently got hold of the latest prototype of the above data logger that is being manufactured by a Mumbai firm. In looks it is an unimpressive rectangular box without a display. It is meant purely for logging trackpoints and waypoints. It claims to be 32 channel and has 4 MB RAM. It has 1. power/lo battery LED 2. Satellite LED - glows red on satellite acquisition 3. Computer/Memory full LED 4. Waypoint LED 1. Power button 2. Computer button 3. Waypoint button It runs on a Nokia cell phone battery and can be charged with a standard nokia charger. There is a serial port and a screw to attach an antenna. The antenna comes with a 3 metre cable and has a powerful magnet. A serial cable is provided with two outlets - one for downloading the GPS data and the other for direct instrument to computer reading. The cable also has a bell-push for recording waypoints. Usage: in a car, stick the antenna on the roof, the instrument inside and tape the way point bellpush to the steering wheel - similar arrangement for a bike. Walking, keep the unit in a pocket, the antenna in a shirt pocket and the waypoint bell push in your hand. Getting data: Connect to a PC using a serial-usb cable. Type cat /dev/ttyUSB0 > filename.txt, and the data is transferred. I had walked around on the footways of a park with the device this morning in heavily overcast conditions with heavy tree cover - the paths marked here are without tweaking - just join-the-dots: http://openstreetmap.org/edit?lat=16.6938&lon=74.4613&zoom=18 Incidentaly the device also has the logo of FSF India on the top, so I suppose this signifies that everything in the device is free software. debian mirror (lenny)?

Hi, does anyone have a full/partial debian mirror ( dists - lenny , arch - i386/amd64 )? or anyone have fat (& unlimited bandwidth) to update one ( I have a june 2007 one - total download required would be about 20GB - binary only ). problem updating lenny mirror on slow pipe is by the time mirror is half update, a quarter of it would have already changed!.. actually i got my answer. yes it does require a server like VNC-server or any remote desktop server. Actually if you use CentOS [or any other distro for that matter] , it will automate the remote desktop access feature for you. The CentOS remote desktop app is quite configurable as well. but one more thing. how do i get a remote desk top. do i need to install a VNC in server also? to get this. if yes then is it possible to get a remote desktop without installing any thing to server? I cant really understand your question. However from what I understand, you want to find out whether the remote computer you are trying to connect from needs any additional software. [ Please correct me if I am wrong ]. Using a package called vnc-java , You can access your computer from any location that has a Java -enabled web browser. Installing a web server

Hi I have downloaded Apache2.2.9 tar file.The instalation guide asks me to copy the tar file in /usr/local/directory.but i am not able to do it because it says I don't have any rights since i am not in root.Also I tried to do in my own directory.This is what i did: I unzipped the tar file of Apache(its name being httpd-2.2.9.tar.bz2) in my own directory.Then using terminal i connected directory by 'cd' then did ./configure. After that it does lots of checking and then i did 'make' and after lots of procedure i did 'make install'.These were the instructions given in the LINUX FOR YOU magazine in one of the articles regarding setting up web servers.But then how do i know my server has started, Then anyone could anyone guide me with PHP5.2.6 installation in short word. I also want to install MySQL.I wanted one more advice which databse platform is better MySQL or SQlLite.I dont know the difference.Thank you for the efforts for reading these.Please help i hav tried almost all the sources and i am a newbie in linux and have installed UBUNTU_8.04 Thanks and Regards, Prasad G Prabhu TE COMPUTERS VESIT MUMBAI.

Hi, I was editing the OSM map in the Juhu area, and found that, compared to the yahoo image and to the existing traces, the whole map seems to have slipped a good way south and slightly east also. I checked other parts of the map and find the same error every where. Since the existing GPS traces also coincide with the Yahoo map, I think that somehow someone has moved the whole map of Mumbai south and east. It may also be because my laptop has low memory or something, but i doubt it as I do not see the same problem in Delhi, Bangalore or Chennai. hi, today i was trying to boot centos live cd. I'm using MSI mobo, 512 Ram and Intel dualcore. If you can boot in verbose mode , you can tell us where exactly the boot process is halting. may i get centos DVD. This is from the CentOS Website. DVD's ----- DVD's are normally available for each version, but the ISO files are not normally included in the ISO directory. You can download the CentOS DVD's via bittorrent. This is because of the following reasons: 1. Files greater than 2 GB are not served properly buy the default apache included in CentOS (and many other distros), so external (public) CentOS mirrors would end up with large files that they could not serve taking up space on thier servers. 2. Including all DVDs in the mirror would increase the size of the CentOS mirror by 50% (it would be 1.5 x current). As we continue to release new arches and support for new versions, this would cause the size of CentOS to become to large; reducing the number of people who could mirror it for us externally. how i'll perform remote desktop feature in it. Cent OS live cd not booting

hi, today i was trying to boot centos live cd. I'm using MSI mobo, 512 Ram and Intel dualcore. i faced following problem. 1. it boots normally but after some after booting its not showing menu. when i press alt+f2 launcher does not open. 2. when i tryed this cd in diffrent computer it stops at starting. it only shows "ready". and after that hangs up. i have some other query too. 3. may i get centos DVD. 4. how i'll perform remote desktop feature in it. thank you.
