hi, Sandip Saini of NRC-FOSS is doing his PhD in a study of foss methodologies. As part of his work, he is trying to compile a set of FOSS success stories. Definition: <quote> Documenting the success stories of FOSS implementation in India-- Nature, Scope and Methodology of the study. The goal of the study is to bring out into public a reliable and independent compilation of some instances where FOSS implementation has been carried out successfully in India. A 'success' in this context is defined as one where there has been an acceptance of at least one FOSS technology or solution across at least one unit of organisation – a department, a project, an enterprise or an institution – either public or private, either IT or non-IT. In other words, an individual who uses only FOSS for his/her needs would not qualify for being considered a success in this context; it has to be an organisational entity/unit. The best case would be where an entire large enterprise (a government department say like Indian Railways, a private corporation like an IT major or an Automobile manufacturing company, etc) has completely switched over to FOSS for all its IT and Computing needs, and the least acceptable instance would that of a small unit of an enterprise (one department of a University, one section of a company or government organisation,etc) that have started using mainly FOSS for at least one significant part of its operations. In Debian Virtualbox, Guest XP Cannot Receive Packets.

Any help towards resolving this problem will be highly appreciated. Hello Everyone, I have setup Virtualbox OSE in Debian Etch and my guest OS is XP. I am using Samba and bridged mode networking in order to use the 'Host Interface' feature that allows the host and guest OS to talk to each other in the same subnet. I am facing a problem of networking in the guest XP. It's ethernet interface has stopped receiving any packets so it is no longer on the net. The History: The virtual HDD is on an NTFS partition so Etch was first upgraded to kernel 2.6.22 in order to use ntfs-3g. Then Virtualbox OSE was installed manually from the tar ball on the VBox site. It took a long time to compile and install but everything went smoothly. Initially Virtualbox was used in NAT mode so everything was fine and net was up and running in the guest XP. Then as per instructions on various websites, uml-utilities and bridge-utils were installed and the tap0 interface was set up. In Etch, Samba was installed as per various website instructions. At one time the 2 OSs even talked to each other and I could access shared folders. However after correcting some minor mistakes in my setup and rebooting the machine, the guest XP canot receive any packets. Once, manually changing the /dev/net/tun ownership even let me get communication back again. However the joy was short lived and after a reboot, even duplicating the same process yielded no results. Now everything is as per the book with proper startup entries but still no packets received by the guest OS. The brctl showstp br0 command shows that both eth0 and tap0 are alive and kicking in forwarding mode. The Mystery: What is amazing is that when I cross checked my Virtualbox by booting it with a live Kubuntu CD, it was and is always able to get its IP address by DHCP from my ADSL router and internet was up and running too. However the OS booted from the virtual HDD cannot get its net up. It was even knocked off and a new virtual disk and OS was loaded but still no result. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! An Open letter on OOXML happenings in India

It is time of Open Letters, this time it is from Dr Deepak Phatak of IIT Bombay. "With reference to the recent happenings in connection with the ISO standardization process of OOXML, actions by or on behalf of Microsoft have caused me deep pain and hurt. Apart from the personal anguish, these actions have tarnished the name of my Institute along with that of several other organizations represented on our committee. In my opinion, these actions go well beyond the behavioral boundaries for a commercial entity. some of these amount to interference with the governance process of a sovereign country. Luckily, wiser and experienced people are in-charge of governance of the nation. However, as a humble teacher and a proud Indian, I wish to register a strong and visible protest." Port mapping in linux

I have the following situation: A windows based program that lacks proxy support is on my secondary computer, which is connected to the internet *through* the primary (linux) one. Now in windows I use AnalogX's portmapper ( http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pmapper.htm ) so that all data received by the primary on certain ports is forwarded to a certain IP on the same ports, and any data received back is sent to the secondary computer. Is there a way to do this is Linux? I tried iptables but couldn't figure out the exact rules required. Thanks a lot. Nikhil

Hi, Besides LINUX which is "open computing" there is another possible "open technology routing of packets". OLSR or "open mesh routing". Please see the few emails on the google group "OPEN MOBILE". *** This open mesh routing is a technology in search of a solution ----- like Xerox copiers initially were, nobody knew why Xerox copiers would be useful -------------- so I'm brainstorming all of you to ask: what will you do with free or almost free routing of packets. ******** Initially, I said, everybody in India should have a cheap monthly payment computer which includes services providable by free routing such as ----------- security cameras for everybody in the building, security cameras for everybody in shops, even genuine-ness of currency note verification (the chip would be very small with a very small antenna which would be embedded in each currency note to be read and verified with a central database or by local digital signing), then we had training for everybody as in life-long education and skills training, then local advertisements. ******* Now, in local shops GOOGLE is sending out teams of people with CARDS to sign in to their web-site and provide information (we did get these cards --- there exact usage is to enable shops to sign in and display information). ** Potentially, with ubiquitous routing (similar to Microsoft's ubiquitous computing) every valuable item on this planet can be tagged ---- the inventory taking problem of factories would be solved (no more lost articles in shops or factories or even homes). ** The supply-chain delivery problem, the transportation problem, gets completely resolved. [OT] ekiga setup ...

I am trying to use ekiga but have not had much success. During setup of the ekiga client it correctly detects that my system is behind a NAT and configures it appropriately. The client is able to login to "ekiga.net" and I guess I am "online" because I am notified of incoming calls. However, when I accept the call, I cannot hear the far party nor can the far party hear me. My network setup is as follows: | ekiga client-------| | *|-------------------| +|--------- Internet (ADSL) ekiga client is 192.168.1.68 (Ubuntu 8.04, ekiga v2.0.12) * Linksys WiFi AP - LAN port is 192.168.1.1, WAN port is 192.168.0.9 (Nodes on LAN NAT'd on the WAN port) + DLink DSL502T router/modem - LAN port is 192.168.0.1, WAN port is dyn. IP (PPPoE) (Nodes on LAN NAT'd on the WAN port) Would appreciate pointers from anyone who has used ekiga successfully - please share your setup. TIA -- Arun Khan

CD Writing at 24x

Hello Everyone, Current laptops and older desktop cd writers have a write speed limit of 24x and the current Moser Bayer 52x media do not write at that speed even in DVD writers. 32x works fine but drives with 24x limits are handicapped. Hi, I bumped into this wonderful tool while following up with something else. So if you have worked or going to work in a mixed VCS environments - work with git, svn, bzr, mercurial all at one go :), you might want to look at this tool. Its already in Debian, somebody needs to put it in Fedora, OpenSuse and other distros. "The mr(1) command can checkout, update, or perform other actions on a set of repositories as if they were one combined respository. It supports any combination of subversion, git, cvs, mecurial, bzr and darcs repositories, and support for other revision control systems can easily be added. HI i had a small query, i wanted to know if it is possible to create a home directory for a particular user by just editing the /etc/passwd file. Suppose for eg : i have abt 1000 unix users, and due to some unforseen reasons my server crashes, however i have copy of the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow file , Now is there a way to directly add those ( 1000 odd user ) to my system with out actually manually using the useradd command ( yes, it is possible to write loop script that will read the /etc/passwd file and create the users ) but is there any other way to do this. thanks for your feed back -- Regards Agnello Dsouza www.linux-vashi.blogspot.com

hi, rony introduced me to this list. i want to examine the technical and business and accounting implications of an open-source company to replace a cell-phone provider like AIRTEL. 1. uses shoutcast (for free radio). 2. uses video editor of kde linux. 3. uses kubuntu linux in server / enterprise and desktop mode. 4. uses alibaba.com for sourcing parts/assembled computers. 5. uses tiny erp or open source erp for interfacing to its customers with the same call-center screen as customer service reps use (no hidden marketing costs). 6. gives free education to all --- or open-source education. 7. uses open source cpu and chip set design ( i remember the macintosh had minimal hardware since cpu did everything ---- a friend of mine had commented on this). 8. all-in-one monitor or keyboard pcs (see alibaba.com) 9. integrated networking remember, open-source business practises too. i did my b.tech in computer science from iit-mumbai (all electronics courses taught) and phd in computer science from university of minnesota, minneapolis (did enough courses in electronics/vlsi to qualify for a minor). i feel the chipset design // open-chip-set can be done. we need something cheap ---- we need a solution for the teeming masses of india. remember billing is important ---- so we use open erp. is it true the gnu license now requires service providers (like google earth) to make their code (and perhaps expert system rules too) open-source.

On my way I cam across a pirated CD stall at andheri station and was surprised to find a 'pirated' copy of Fedora core 8. I went up to him to ask for a Debian DVD. "What's that?", he asked. I told him it was a Linux. I/O Error....Cannot read from fd0

Hello Everyone, Some time back I read a message about this error showing up when Ubuntu was booted live. I cannot recollect whether it was on this list or elsewhere else. However today at a client's place when I tried Kubuntu 8.04 + KDE4 live on an unbranded Intel 865G mobo, it showed the same error lines after the initial kernel loading. After a second try, I let it move further and after 4 or 5 lines of the error, it booted further normally and brought the desktop up. One very good advantage of 8.04 is that NTFS partitions can be directly viewed in the GUI file browser (Dolphin) with write access. Finnix - A Lightwieght Diagonistic CD

Hello Everyone, I was looking for a Debian based live CD for diagonistic purposes and came across a very nice featherweight distro called Finnix. Here is what the site says..... "Finnix is a self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution ("LiveCD") for system administrators, based on Debian testing. You can mount and manipulate hard drives and partitions, monitor networks, rebuild boot records, install other operating systems, and much more. Finnix includes the latest technology for system administrators, with Linux kernel 2.6, LVM2, encrypted partitions, etc. And above all, Finnix is small; currently the entire distribution is over 300MiB, but is dynamically compressed into a bootable image of about 100MiB^1 <http://www.finnix.org/#endnote_isosizes> . Finnix is not intended for the average desktop user, and does not include any desktops, productivity tools, or sound support, in order to keep distribution size low." I downloaded it yesterday night and tried it today on my system. Booting is fast and takes you to a root prompt. It has a lot of applications for administering disks, testing the internet, even has pppoe tools. I was able to make a pppoe connection and surf the net using lynx. The best part is that though it is featherweight, it uses the latest kernel so it can mount ntfs partitions with write enabled for taking backups into them. When you mount the partition, simply replace the normal -t ntfs with -t ntfs-3g. If you are into maintaining GNU/Linux or Doze systems, this CD is a must have. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! After 4 or 5, the boot process continues further. But when it gives error and stops the boot process (like in the OP's setup) it would best to disable devices, in the BIOS, that are not present. Hello everyone at LUG-BOM, I am facing this strange problem while trying to install Kubuntu/Ubuntu 7.10 on a friend's computer. The media integrity is verified as I used the same CDs on his laptop and they worked fine. However I got the following error while trying to install it on the desktop computer. { [ 0.476000 ] .. MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC [ 0.476000 ] Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the `noapic` option. } I did not try the apic=debug and the noapic options as i am not aware how to set the boot options. Any help in this regard greatly appreciated. Of particular interest to IndLinux is that NIXI is willing to (a) fund localisation work carried out by distributed community groups in the country, (b) fund projects aimed at polishing open-source Indian language tools, and deploying them, e.g., making sure that OpenOffice, and Mozilla Indian language packs get built, and distributed, and (c) provide bandwidth, and hosting to such open-source projects. 6. Deployment of Indian language, and other open-source software developed in India, and/or targeted at an Indian population. Their examples were Hindawi, Dhvani, etc. The goal here would be to (a) put together software that demonstrates the use, and (b) convince people using proprietary alternatives to switch. 7. Survey of sites in the .in domain: Someone to carry out a study of .in sites (which are currently some 4.5 lakh in number), categorise them, and give awards to the best sites in various categories, e.g., best Hindi/Indian language blogging site, best open-source site, etc. 8. Rework syllabi at elementary, and middle school levels to replace references to proprietary applications with generic teaching, and/or references to open-source alternatives. 9.
