[OT] Networking IP Query.

Hello All, A few days back I gave a small introductory training session to some freshers on networking, ip addresses, subnets, gateways and dns. However after that one question comes to my mind about subnets. Can we have multiple networks with adjacent subnets on a common LAN connection or do they need to be physically different too? For example can we have 192.168.1-31/27 and 192.168.32-63/27 on the same LAN switch as independent subnet islands? Theoretically it looks so. When we set up network information on a host pc, we give the IP address and subnet. However, how does that host know the starting and ending ip of its subnet so that it will not talk to its adjacent subnet? ......For example, how does host 192.168.1.33/27 know that its subnet starts from ip 32 upto 63 and will not talk to 31 or less? Hi, Opensuse 10.3 has been released on some mirrors. Can anybody help get it ? Currently available at: ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/opensuse/distribution/10.3/iso/dvd/ http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/opensuse/distribution/10.3/iso/dvd/ Could be available at other mirrors but not all of them have made it available. I checked a few and found the above two have the ISOs. There is no official annoucement regarding its availability. The above mirrors also have torrents available. The ISO for i386 is around 4.1 GB. Tata Indicom Broadband @ Linux box

Hi, Few days back, I subscribed to Tata Indicom Broadband ( www.tataindicombroadband.in ). I chose the Infinity 1 Mbps plan. This apparently comes with no installation charges even if you don't give commitment for more than 1 month. For other plans you have to commit for 4 months to get that 1K INR waiver. I found that they do the feasilbilty quite fast and response time was quite fast as well ( this might depend on locality). But co-ordination between the tech and marketing dudes was not so good. Oh and neither of them knew if they supported Linux :O. Surprisingly the callcentre dude confidently said they do and the tech dude would setup everything when he comes to my place. Cut to my home ( few days later, i.e. yesterday ) - the tech dude arrives. When I tell him that I have linux on all the boxes he made a few calls and finally said he doesn't know how it works on Linux but he will get a mail from his boss and will come back and do the setup. After some random conversation, I asked him if he can do the setup on Windows atleast and he managed to do it on my windows partition in my laptop ( yes, I didnot delete it yet :). The general process these chaps follow is - login to some webconsole of theirs where they find data about the customer - go to the tata indicome bb website and register with the Serial number and PIN code. After which you have to select your username, password and the usual cruft. Then the create a account on your box and check if everything works and leave. The Linux way works much faster :). I followed [1]. But all that is needed is "sudo pppoeconf". If you already have a /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider, back it up if you care for existing settings. After that is mostly selecting yes or no. For user name - please select username(a)vsnl.net or whatever domain they have given you. But point being the complete userid+domain has to be there, afaik. Type in your password. ( when the dudes set it up, they generally put passwd as tata123, change it using the website ) Don't know if this is worth adding into the wiki. Hi, I was at FREED.IN/2007 in Delhi - a event organised by ilug-del. This even was known as FreeDel earlier. This was the first even I attended by ilug-del. Some luggers from BOM have attended FreeDel many times before. It was a wonderful experience. Meeting many old friends and making many more new friends. Quite a few from ILUG-BOM were present. Many if not all of them were actually speakers at the event. The event kick started with Raj Mathur opening address and lamp lighting ceremony. Shawn Kwon gave a wonderful talk on his experiences with FOSS in Korea. It was followed by Atul Chitnis's interesting talk on innovation and startup. Was a good topic for budding entrepreneurs in the audience. Speakers from LUG-BOM included, Devdas Bhagat,Philip Tellis Barkha Khatri, Anurag Patel, Friji Karthikeyan, Arun Khan, Ananth A, Gaurav Chaturvedi, Dinesh Shah (who is a temporary Delhite atm) , Kartik Mistry and me. ( hope I didnot forget anyone, sorry if I did ). I finally met some people for the first time whom I knew from mailing lists and irc - Raj Mathur, Kingsly John (nicest and most helpful person ever!), Karanbir Singh ( you *have* hear him speak at least once, especially in a bof sort of environment ). There were quite a impromptu bofs. It often started as a chat and went on to become a fullfledged bof. One example was - when Mayank Sharma ( of Linux.com fame ), Aanjhan Ranganathan and me were discussing how we often meet at foss conf at various places - when Karanbir Singh joined us and Kingsly a little later. Since then the discussion took a right turn and went straight into discussing how certain aspects of ISPs work and "pairing" between ISPs work and other things even. After that a reporter from Tehelka.com joined us and asked many questions about FOSS. From that point on, many others joined the bof. That was one enlightening discussion. There were two panel discussions even and many many talks in different tracks. There was a lot of new things to learn, I must say. I had the opportunity to meet two GSoC candidates for the first time - Piyush Verma (KDE) and Anant Narayan ( Bell Labs ). Interesting chaps. Hope to see them again in future.Met old friends and known people from the Indian foss scene. Other lugs represented were - Pune LUG, ILug-Cal, people from Bangalore were there even ILUG-Del hospitality was awesome. I have never seen so many kababs at one time. ;). Some of us stayed in JNU campus, the place is really nice. The event was co-organised by JNU - School of Information Technology. Bottom line - great conference. You should seriously consider attending the event next time. Btw, it really is a community event. The line between speakers and volunteers is almost invisible. Quite a few speakers happily got "volunteered". Be there next time to see it yourself and experience it first hand. Cheers! Actually, As far as I know they are replacing all their logins/ PPPoE based connections with a browser based login. Once you login (yes it works fine with firefox), your effectively online. I think they had a PPPoE connection here, but it was before i took up tata, when i joined they just gave me something called the TI BB Web Dialer [loginmum.tataindicombroadband.in]. Which in a way is good cause it works with any browser with js. Satish

The thread referred to in the subject line started with Mail delivery issues, and then started discussing some newbie problems, and ended up with some discussion about shorthand and being literate in English ... Our emails are archived. When you search emails using any search engine, getting replies and help based on short hand English becomes difficult. The user's group's emails are a great source of help for a number of people who look for help on the Internet. Therefore it is necessary to write questions and reply messages as comprehensively as possible. Our questions and replies to them are valuable knowledge base. improper language and subject of threads does disturb the implicit protocol. Therefore, please use good subject lines, and if necessary use new subject lines, or edit subject lines for appropriate archiving. And of course as good language as possible. Nagarjuna

Hi I have searched for a document ion that allows a mail server to automatically add a banner to the message that sender composes, but found none . Hi, I need to run some stuff as root after users log in to the server. Need access to $REMOTE_HOST & $USER etc. This server has KDE & users don't want GNOME. Is there an equivalent to GDM PostLogin/Default for KDE? Or is there any other way to achieve same results like by inserting my code lines in some script Or by putting in a script somewhere? Problem with broken package, Ubuntu 6.06

Hello, I am a new to the world of Linux. I have Ubuntu 6.06 LTS installed on my machine. And I have a problem with it, I apologise for such a long mail but to be on the safe side, I thought it would be better to describe the problem as elaborately as possible as I am unaware of the functioning of this system. Since this version of Ubuntu did not come with gcc i tried getting and installing it from the internet. But while doing so (I admit I was totally unaware what I was doing..) I somehow messed up with installed packages on the system. The installation of a package called libc6 did not complete successfully and I got some error saying all dependencies could not be satisfied. It also said (although I don't precisely remember the exact message..) that a service called "gdm" is running that interfered with the installation. [Till then I was unaware of the [package managers available on board; my fault! Didn't read the manual!] Then, when i tried using the package manager [The "Add/Remove" utility & Synaptic] the software refused go any further saying there is a broken package on the machine that needs to be removed first. It instructed me to run the command "apt-get -install -f" at the terminal. I did. The message I got there was that two more packages (ubuntu-base & ubuntu-minimal) will have to be removed from the system along with the broken package "libc6". I cancelled the process right there.. Because the warning said it would free up more than 2GB space on the disk on removing the ubuntu-minimal package. I suspect this must include quite essential parts of the system and therefore chose not to remove it then before getting more information about it. But I am not able to install any more packages unless I remove these three packages from the system. Meanwhile I also requested the latest version, 7.04 (Fiesty Fawn) of Ubuntu from the Ubuntu website and have received the disk today. I have seen that it includes updated versions of some of the packages, has gcc preinstalled, and I suppose, is definitely an improvement over Dapper Drake. Now my doubt is: 1. How can I resolve the error on my installed system, 6.06 LTS (the problem described above)? 2. Is removing the package "ubuntu-minimal" from the system safe? Can it be restored to previous state? (I'm on dial-up, downloading 2GB of data is an impossibility!) 3.* Is there another way? can i install the latest software i received today (Ubuntu 7.04) overwriting the previous one, but preserving the user accounts, settings, software and data that i've already stored there? For instance, I've installed Mozilla 2.0.0.6, while v 7.04 comes with Mozilla 2.0.0.3! Can i keep the newer version there without messing up anything? (I also have plug-ins like Flash Player for Mozilla installed..) 4. If not 3, can I at least keep the data on the disk unharmed while installing the new (Ubuntu 7.04 over Ubuntu 6.06 LTS) OS. Asked 1 and 2 just for gaining knowledge about what can be done in such a situation, however I want to install the newer version nevertheless, so please at least show me a way to do at least one of 3 or 4 if possible! I really appreciate your cooperation and concern. { * Here I try to describe the currently installed system's configuration as much as I can comprehend and remember. 1. one password protected user account. 2. dial up connection set up. (for modem set-up, I used the scanModem script, thanks to http://www.linmodems.org/; it was very useful and easy to work with) I use "wvdial" to connect to the internet. 3. Mozilla 2.0.0.6 installed (removed the default 1.x version that was preinstalled), + Flash Player plug-in + loads of Mozilla extensions. 4. I have a dual boot with M$ (khidkiyan :p), so, all doors and windows mounted (read FAT32 & NTFS drives! =)); actually Ubuntu does that by default; no pain. 5. 405 MB of data on the Linux drive. Can I preserve it while installing V 7.04 over V 6.06 LTS. 6. Currently fsck, while booting, gives me an error saying the boot sector and its backup are different, and provides all the offsets/differences that it encountered. If fsck logs it to a file, i can post it here if i know where it is logged, that might give a better picture. } [[ About my internet connection.. Although i somehow know that my connection uses CHAP authentication, i get the following logs at the terminal every time i use "wvdial".. --> Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission denied --> --> PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) may be flaky. --> Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/chap-secrets: Permission denied --> --> CHAP (Challenge Handshake) may be flaky. List, Terms used: IDE: Integrated Development Environment CS: Computer Science IT: Information Technology I was thinking about this for sometime now, and realized, that there wasn't any emphasis on the "tools" being used in courses (graduate, postgraduate) (CS and IT). They may not be of utmost importance, but I'll like to know your opinions and choices. 1. Most of the courses use Windows as their OS and have Notepad as the default text editor used for programming languages such as Java etc. Even for HTML, CSS etc, notepad remains the default text editor. Notepad (default) doesn't have any syntax highlighting or other options. Surprisingly, students are told they learn better, if they are not equipped with these. (Text editor features) I wonder, programmers under *nix, have Konsole ( ;) ) based text editors as well as GUI text editors (Just to differentiate for the sake of it: vim, nano and Kate, Emacs, gEdit) which provide syntax highlighting and a host of other options. Are they at a loss? 2. IDEs are great for development. Because, they hide the actual commands of compiling, interpreting / running the program. (some) They also enable the user with point-click tools and generate code for those tools / components. Surprisingly, the same students are allowed to use the Turbo C++ 3.0 (16-bit compiler) IDE with syntax highlighting for C / C++ programs and are able to write typical C / C++ programs later. The question is, are Text Editors better for students to begin programming or are IDEs better for students? HI As metioned before i have set up a postfix server with mysql database , using work around tutorial , but since i am trying to ISP mailserver with rellerer control pannel ( using postfix admin ).. there is no way to manage the amavisd and spamassisn rules for individual domains and users ... does any one have a work around for this ... your input will be of great help -- Warm Regards Agnello . Blender Issues.

Hello All, I have installed Blender 2.4 for Windows along with Python 2.5.1 for a client. Blender imports the .3ds file format from 3D Studio. However, in 3D Studio, it has to be exported from .max format to .3ds first. Now what happened was that after exporting from max to 3ds into Blender, a chair has turned into a drawing board used by draughtsmen with an extra pole sticking perpendicular out of the board. Has anyone on this list had such teething problems in Blender? What could be the work around for this? I will check it out on the net too. Any help will be greatly appreciated. -- Regards, Rony.
