Installation Festival Report

Hi everyone, As all of you know, we had a small InstallFest in St. Mary's School Mazgaon, Mumbai. We successfully installed Linux (Fedora 25) in over 30 computers of the school's lab. Our group members came to the school around 1.30 PM. We were pleased to see our old memeber Rony already there. We really need more members from ML to participate in this movement. Sajida Madam from St. Mary's School, Fr. Jude, engineers and technicians from Ajuman-I-Islam were also present. The enthusiasm & patience of the school staff and engineers was commendable. The members namely Nilesh and Tayyab Sir, who reached the venue early, started copying the customised ISO image prepared by Rajeev to the USB thumb drives. We prepared 7-8 bootable Live USB and distributed it to the members and school staff. We started the install fest by doing a small demo installation on one of the computer in the lab. The technicians and teachers took notes as the install process progressed. Later everyone started the install process simultaneously on the computers, to our surprise the staff was successfull in installing linux with little help. Sajida Madam installed linux on two to three of the machines all by herself. We were mostly over seeing and helping them. Meantime we went to one of the class rooms to examine an education software named "eSense" by Navneet. It was browser based software so there won't be much problem in running it on Linux. Mr Walter, the software provider to school, has already talked to Navneet. Once Navneet comes up with Linux port, we can install linux in each classroom where one Windows 7 desktop runs this application at present. Otherwise we might need to port it. Rony pointed out that such smart school or digital school is only a marketing gimmick and it has nothing to do it with good education. Protecting schools from such commercialization is another social movement. At present we have to fucus on Free software movement. We can of course discourage schools on using such shiny tools in place of traditional methods when we interact with them. Benoy has come up with an idea of making such open source software as an alternative and distribute in schools. That is a wonderful project. We observed that eSense was only collection of videos based on text book lessons. We had another surprise visitor in the afternoon, Krishnakant of Digital Freedom Foundation, he came with Prajakta (a GNUKhata team memeber). Both were excited to see the enthusiasm of members. Rony was very happy to see Krishnakant after a long time. Krisnakant told about latest release of GNUKhata and that the software is now receiving nice response from government and private sector. "From next academic year, GNUKahata will be a part of curriculum in Kerala" he said. Mr Walter (School Software Provider) also showed interest in GNUKhata. He assured to offer it as an alternative to Tally. Fr Jude remebered that he had met Krishnkant long ago in IIT mumbai. Father Jude informed us that board provides a kind of exe file during exam. So we must write to board to send an alternative for it and ensure from them that there won't be any issues due to adoption of Free Software. He is going to write to state board about it. This is an important point and we must all take it seriously otherwise the schools will hesitate to adopt FOSS. Latif, from Osmanabad, was also present for the festival. We have great hopes from him. Our success certainly depend on how the movement is adopted in other parts of Maharashtra. We need many more people like Latif. Thanks to Latif and also thanks to Tayyab for bringing him. We completed everything before tea break. Post tea session was a relaxing time for all of us. We shared our experiences and chat. The festival ended with a group photo. Cheers !! St Mary, We are Ready...

Hi all Members, Here is a small update of St Mary Linux Migration. Today we reached exactly at 1 o clock to the St Mary school. Purpose of our visit was to have trial installation and testing for Saturday's Migration. Father Jude was talking to a group of parents near the gate. He welcomed all of us and instructed the non teaching staff to open the labs.. Also he gave us his laptop for Linux installation. We have decided to install Fedora-25 build, customized by our member Rajeev specially for Schools. Thanks to him for such a wonderful job done in a small amount of time. Rajieev's live image booted successfully but the installer had a permission issue and was not starting. Then we tried Ubuntu 16.04.2 and Fedora 25 plain image. Both got installed successfully on the lab machines. After that we got Rajeev's on-call support and we were able to diagnose and install the same on Fr Jude's laptop. Finally every thing is working and the laptop is ready. This means that Rajeev's image can now be used for Saturday's installation. Observations : 1. Fedora's partitioning tools in the default installer was confusing for us. As a workaround we used gparted.manually partitioned the disk. 2. There seems to be an error Notification about boot image crash but the system is working correctly. 3. We saw few errors during shutdown. Few suggestions : 1. Put Gparted in live image.. 3. Put gnome tweak tool. 2. Request to add some extensions by default namely top icons, dash to doc application menu. 3. Put some educational games. Today we had a special guest - Latif. Latif is from Osmanabad. He is well acquainted with Linux. He teaches Edu-BOSS in School. He is about to start this mission in nearby schools. We all will support him. All best wishes to him. Mostly Raghu and Tayyab performed all experiments, helped by Benoy. Benoy was busy but still managed to find some time and came for support. Latif and me were only testing different packages such as gimp, libre office etc. On Saturday we also can take part in installation, since 30 machines are to be switched to Linux (Fedora). To help us, Principal Fr Jude's Fernandes had called a Lab maintenance person Mr Dilip. Dilip curiously watched the installations and is ready to learn the skill in future. In the last meeting, I noticed that Principal Jude's new machine had skylake processor and linux mint 17.3 was installed on it. Mint 17.3 being based upon Ubuntu LTS 14.04(which is from 2014) it lacks skylake support (As far as I know) So his audio was not working, We need to check if 'stretch' has a considerable newer kernel with support for recent hardware that the school is procuring. Another place where fedora scores. It closely tracks the current kernel releases, meaning it has the most complete hardware driver support, especially in categories like wifi, GPU (GPL) and motherboard integrated devices. Also I feel 2 gb ram mentioned in earlier email is a bit on the lower end. Please do keep in mind that anything we suggest will be perceived as linux experience, and if anything doesn't work or becomes a hassle for them, it will be a bad case for linux from their point of view. As they say first impression always matters, So please suggest specifications carefully. Which is why we are coordinating a test installer image to deploy at the school to see it's performance... Rushabh's team had a presentation that was postponed in last meetup, Do you guys plan on having it in this meet? Also as some of you may know we are helping St. Mary's School (mumbai) to migrate from windows environment to linux on 3rd June. Someone (I think Benoy) had an idea that we should have a meetup there, those who attend can help us setup the workstations. We can make it a Install Fest. What do you guys think? How to verify digital signatures in Adhaar & other govt. pdf documents in linux?

Hi, As the subject line suggests, How do you guys verify digital signatures in pdf documents, mainly in e-adhaar pdf obtained from UIDAI website. As far as I searched the feature is not available in most of the libre pdf readers like evince or okular. There are some threads on internet that poppler(the pdf library) is going to get this feature soon. What do you guys do to validate the signature? Hello, We can argue or debate for months over it being old or outdated, but neither of those are actually true. We need to understand a simple fact that when we say “old” or “outdated” these days, its actually too early to claim that. The actual word that you should use is “ostracised” from the consumers. Please, let me elaborate my point here. Firefox is great browser that is used by many of “developers” because we understand the mechanics of the system inside that software. Plus, we all admire that fact thats its an important part of the open source community. But, a large number of user/consumers do not want a browser thats great. The follow that paradigm of popularity where Chrome stands on top. Lets say that browsers are cars. So people might know that HONDA is way better of a car than MARUTI, but service centres and after buy experience and popularity is way better for the MARUTI so people prefer MARUTI. Now, since people are using so many MARUTI cars there fore the accessories and spare parts for MARUTI are way more. Similarly, Chrome has become popular among customers, therefore, web developers ignore the other browser specifications in order to capture MAXIMUM market (not complete market). Firefox getting old?

Hello Friends, Firefox has been my favorite browser in Ubuntu but nowadays it does not provide functions that have a JavaScript () type buttons in forms. For example in the Vodafone site, after entering the mobile no, email and amount for payment, there is a submit button to go to the next page but it does not do anything. I have to use chrome to do this transaction. Is Firefox getting old and outdated? Regards, Rony.

Exit Of Microsoft from School Education ?

Hi, On 27 may 2016, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has given a reply to my notice. Maharashtra State Board was neglecting Open Source directives given by MHRD. Though the Circular in this regard was issued, it was published in the education booklet "Shikshan Sankraman" !. The circular as Important as this, which could have saved huge amounts for Schools, must have been given to Schools directly and it must have been given wide publicity in major news papers. The Board's claim that by putting a note - "Schools and Colleges can use Open Source Software" on index page, they have followed directions given by MHRD is ridiculous. In the remaining pages of the reply, Board has given photocopies copies of the changes they have made in 2016-17 text books to be printed soon, and they have clarified further that Open Source can be used in "Theory as well as in Practicals" which is very important. Note that MHRD has used the word "PREFER" while Board is cleverly using "CAN" ! Anyway, I assume that this is only a symbolic exit of Microsoft from State's Schools Education. This covers State Schools and Junior Colleges in Maharashtra. But University Education too is compelling degree colleges to use proprietary software. Situation is somewhat better in Engineering courses but in the courses such as Computer Applications (TYBcom), there are softwares like MS Excel and Visual Basic. Also there are direct questions in the examination on the commands used in Excel and VB. I am going to send similar letter to Mumbai University too. Also the course MS-ACIT has been made mandatory for teachers. This course is exclusively an advertisement of Microsoft and other other proprietary software. Since after removing proprietary software from school. This course, which itself is a violation of MHRD notification, becomes meaningless for teachers. Hence appropriate changes are necessary in this course curriculum. We have to follow this matter in Education Department. I request all to help Schools in Maharashtra aware of the purpose and significance of this change and make open source movement stronger. Mumbai Hackathon and Monthly Meetings

Hi all, We four of us from mailing list visited DBIT. The hackathon was awesome ! 50+ teams gave presentations (three times the last year number !). Majority of the Open source projects were Android and web based. Hackathon and other such events can play a significant role in promoting open source but we need to be in touch with the participants. So we must try to bring students to this mailing list. I know there are many members here who can guide them properly. Rushabh introduced a few of his team members, Neil, Nabin and others. We had some discussion about the venue of our meetings with DBIT. We found DBIT faculty really enthusiastic. A good news is that we have got permission from the head of the institution to conduct our monthly meetings. It seems that the institute is determined to promote open source. Tayyab sir and few other Profs of DBIT will soon join (or might have already joined) the mailing list. We talked to few students who instantly agreed to join the list. As pointed out by a few members the list is not known to many students and open source lovers. Through monthly meetings and other events like hackathon we should try to get more members here. Hackathon is indeed a great initiative Frappe ( https://frappe.io/about <https://frappe.io/about> ). Thanks to Rushabh. Rushabh, will you please upload a few snaps of the hackathon ? Hi guys, My name is Ashish Kakar. I'm from Mumbai. I just joined this mailing group. I had tried searching for a Linux User Group in Mumbai earlier but without much success. Today I got some free time at work so I decided to try again et voila! I have been using Linux for a couple of years now (5-6) but I cant say I'm an expert yet. I have tried Mandriva, Ubuntu, Slax (briefly), Fedora, CentOS in that order and currently I don't have any OS (not even Windows) on my laptop. I'm curious about a few distros like Gentoo and Arch. Anyways, do we have any meetups? I would love to be there. Ashish

Hi guys, Been unwell for the past few days so couldn't reply earlier. Also, I sent 2 messages in the"top-posting" format. Apologies for that. I'm using hotmail and it automatically posts messages in that format. Henceforth, I will make sure that the replies are in the quoted format (will have to figure out how to do it in hotmail). Which mailing agent do you generally use? But I have to say our landing page http://www.glug-bom.org/ is super-efficient. You can't get more efficient than that. I also checked out the landing page of Pune Linux User Group http://www.plug.org.in/. It's quite simple and efficient as well. I wanted to attend the meetup tomorrow but my boss has called me to work and I hate to disappoint my boss. PIL for Open Source in Education - Update

Hi, In last month's proceedings, Hon High Court passed an important order to make appropriate changes in School/College curriculum for academic year 2017-18 ( in view of Notification dated 17 June 2014 which advises states to adopt open source on priority) Government has formed an experts committee for this implementation. The report is expected before 8 March 17. So next date is kept on 31 March 2017. Another good news is that Prof Kannan of 'Spoken Tutorials' seems to be one of the members in the committee. Prof Kannan, being a strong supporter of open source, has been putting great efforts to promote open source. He himself says that obsolete curriculum is the biggest problem in ICT education. Also he has signed our on line petition for Mandating Open Source. His work will be meaningful if open source is effectively implemented through curriculum. Now we can definitely expect a report from the committee suggesting mandatory adoption of Open Source in Education in strong and clear words. Best wishes to Prof Kannan and his team. Earlier, Mr Krishnakant Mane and DFF filed a similar PIL in order to have a greater impact of the original petition. The two petitions will now be joined (Probably on 31 March). Original petition is representing students and teachers while Krishnakant is representing Visually impaired students and students in rural areas in particular. Lots of thanks to Krishnakant. Open source C++ programs

I am looking for some programs for performing empirical measurements of a new method of static analysis for resolving virtual function calls. My rough requirements are: * The programs should be publicly available (the credibility measurements on programs that they cannot see. * The programs should be real applications, preferably not very large (say upto 20KLoC). * They should have a liberal use of virtual functions. * They should be compilable by gcc/g++. * They should have dependencies on special libraries or other programs. The build progress should be simple. Ideally, the usual sequence of `./configure' followed by 'make' should do the trick. * They should be reasonably clean programs. Some C++ features are compiled in an obscure manner by gcc/g++ and we seem to be spending much more time in fighting the IRs produced by these obscure compilations than in the actual problems at hand. Spec benchmarks have troubled us a lot on this front. We are looking at the programs on sourceforge and github but there are no easy ways of identifying such programs. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. hi, i had been working with the high resolution of the console as delivered with ubuntu server distribution, hated it, but had to make do since i couldn't find material which could show me a way to switch off the 'vga' mode. last night, i migrated away from ubuntu, it's too big for my tastes. on debian jessie, and this too has that same high resolution console. i have tinkered around with the console-setup and grub files which only afforded me a regular console on grub, but after grub transfers command to the operating system, i am still stuck with a high resolution console. is there any solution for this problem? and ah, yes, i still work at the console, no x11 for me. thanks, ~mayuresh

Hi, 47 Supporters so far. Thanks Nagarjuna for your comments and support. I met Krisnakant today. He appreciated the petition drafted by Rushabh, JT and others. He has assured his active participation in this activity along with his gnukhata team - Ishan, Navin, Abhijit, Sachin and Vinita. We have decided to take small informal sessions in schools and colleges for students/teachers to boost the activity. At the same time we will try to get supporting letters from some well known schools and colleges stating that these institutions themselves do not want proprietary softwares and want to use FOSS. Letters will be sent to MHRD along with petition & signatures. (I know few such institutions, krisnakant also knows a few. He is going prepare a draft in couple of days. So we can get it printed quickly on letter head after convincing them). We know it is difficult to do all this in such a short amount of time but let us try. (Orators are welcome !) National Education Policy 2016 : " For the first time, the Government of India is embarking on a time-bound grassroots consultative process, which will enable the Ministry of HRD to reach out to individuals across the country through over 2.75 lakh direct consultations while also taking input from citizens online " - http://mhrd.gov.in/nep-new We all know the benefits of FOSS and also the miserable state of FOSS in our country. Needless to say that the root cause lies in ICT Education. The draft, which is available for download, does not give any importance to open source. It only refers it once or twice. Please do send email to nep.edu(a)gov.in by 31st July 2016, in order that Free and Open Source Software would play the central role in ICT Education. Even a one-line email supporting FOSS in ICT Education will count. Kindly share it on other Linux groups and other places. Thanks and Regards Milind

Hi, Rishabh, JT and Arun have already given important points, In addition to that please consider the main line roughly as follows. 1] Use of FOSS or BOSS must be made mandatory for ICT Education or in any activity in education. (They are making sanskrit mandatory as per input draft) Only recommendation or preference has not worked so far. Educational Institutions can easily find loopholes. 2] A separate and independent body to ensure that it is implemented properly. 3] Proper and effective platform for complaints regarding Violation of Open Source Policy. Also please let us know who is working on first draft of petition to avoid duplication of work. To be frank, I am not very good at drafting otherwise would have prepared it. Please forgive. I think we can upload the petition latest by 15 July so that sufficient number of signatures can be obtained till 30th July.. Regards, Milind
