Hello, I bought a Compaq V3033AU few months back. Turion X2 1.6, 1GB RAM , 100GB HDD, 14.1 wide screen. and rest of the regular features. I've tested it with FC5 32 bit , FC5 64 bit , Gentoo 64 bit, OpenSuse 10.2 but stuck to Gentoo 64 bit in the end. The laptop works well with all the versions I mentioned. The graphics are great with the Nvidia proprietery driver. For wireless I had to use ndiswrapper but I think it might work with the native bcm43xx driver in 2.16.20 . Ofcourse, I am using the i386 binary version of Firefox. Blackdown Java as well as Flash work fine. With the alsa oss emulation I get audio too inside firefox ! Whats your budget ? I think the current starting price of the Compaq V3000 series is around 42000/- . excess downloads on Ubuntu

I have a system with Ubuntu Dapper, firefox, Opera and Evolution email client running. After i activated the Connection properties button I notice that a lot of downloading continues to happen even when the system is idle. the downloading stops only after at least 6 to 8 MBs are downloaded every time I activate MTNL triband. How do I stop this? Every MB costs One Rupee so its obviously very expensive. Shiv Kumar

Samba PDC permission issues

Hello List, I have created a setup consisting of : 1. Samba-PDC server running Centos Linux 4.4, 32 bit, Samba version 3.0.9.1.3E.10, named A 2. This server is joined by three Samba workstations running Centos Linux 4.4, 32 bit, Samba version 3.0.9.1.3E.10, Named B, C & D. The workstations (B, C & D) are authenticated by PDC (A). There are Unix groups on PDC which are converted to NT-groups on A (PDC), using the command : # net groupmap add ntgroup="group-name" unixgroup="group-name" type=d The 3 workstations share files that are given group-wise ACL permissions. When I join the workstations to the PDC server through authconfig command, the workstation is shown as joined. When I use the command "getent -g" , it does not show the PDC group. It shows the groups of the local workstation only. The ACL permissions are not working. I am using the command : # setfacl -m g:DOMAIN\\groups:rwx /foldername I get the error message : setfacl: Option -m: Invalid argument near character 3 I seem to be missing something, because, on completing the setup, this worked for 4 hours and then stopped. In the statement his wholeheartedly agrees that DRM has NOT worked and is NOT the solution for curbing ``illegal music" and is certainly NOT the way to go for the future. i think this statement worth noting as this is the fist time(to the best of my knowledge) a CEO of a company doing major music related business has ever admitted to the failure of DRM. Hi All, This is just a brief writeup on my experience with installing Linux on the Intel DG965RY motherboard. Hardware -------- Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @2.4GHz Intel DG965RY Motherboard 1 GB DDR2-533 RAM 250GB SATA HDD PATA Emprex DVD+-RW Software i386 ------------- Suse 10.1 Suse 10.2 Debian Sarge Knoppix 5.1.1 Fedora Core 6 Mandriva Software x86_64 --------------- Suse 10.1 x86_64 Debian Etch AMD64 Fedora Core 6 x86_64 CDROM detection --------------- Out of all the software mentioned above, NONE of them except for Fedora Core 6 even proceeded further than the CDROM detection stage. The DG965RY board uses the Marvell PATA chipset which is not supported by the linux at the moment (though there are some patches available in the kernel tree). All the distros would boot and then fail to detect a valid installation disk in the drive. The solution on google is to add the "all-generic-ide" option while booting. It didn't work for any of the distros. Only the Fedora distros would actually proceed beyond the CDROM detection phase and start the installation procedure. The complete option set recommended for this board is "all-generic-ide irqpoll pci=nommconf". Installation ------------ Having a dual core system, I obviously wanted to use virtualization so I opted for the virtualization package while customizing my install. The install proceeded normally and within 30-40 mins I had an installed Fedora Core 6 system with Xen virtualization. Unfortunately it was horribly unstable. Being a new system, I didn't know if the issue was with my hardware or software so I reinstalled Fedora (both i386 and x86_64) multiple times with various combinations of bios settings, installation options, etc. Nothing worked. The system would lock and crash within 10 mins of use. Yesterday I installed a bare minimum Fedora Core 6 x86_64 option again with no virtualization. Lo and behold, it worked beautifully. No crashes, very stable with the 2.6.18 kernel. Booting ------- The install doesn't add the full option line to the kernel in the grub menu.lst. It just adds the pci=nommconf option. The line has to be manually edited in the menu.lst file. Browsing -------- Browsing, of course, doesn't work out of the box since it enables IPV6 by default. Disabling IPV6 worked and I could browse the net. Updates ------- The default yum repository configured is from download.fedora.redhat.com which is so slow that yum timeouts trying to retrieve repomd.xml. Same with the default configured mirrorlist. The option was to create a local mirror list with mirrors added manually from Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. This worked and a "yum update" updated 300 packages by downloading 421 MB from the mirrors. (1 night's work with the DSLNU plan from MTNL) Open Issue ---------- Even though I have added "irqpoll" in the kernel option, the boot message says that IRQ #19 not working or something and that I should use the irqpoll option !!! Haven't yet checked this on google. Any inputs will be welcome. Summary ------- I now have a working Fedora system with the 2.6.19 kernel and updated packages. It is still barebones and I have to install all the productivity and development software but now I don't anticipate any difficulties. I have not added my printer/scanner/camera, etc. I'll try and update this when I do so. Hope this helps others using this board. Regards, Rajesh

Debian Etch DVD's available

Hi all, i've finished downloading all 3 Debain Etch DVD iso images for i386. These are the full install DVD's. i have also written 2 sets of them on DVD's. One set is going to be passed to HBCSE so that more people can make copies, i spoke to Anurag about the same. The other is with me, i'm willing to exchange it for 3 blank Sony DVD-R's. i can't burn them that often as its pretty time consuming and my writer only supports DVD burning max at 2x. Let's see if we can work out something. If there are other's willing to share in on the burning time, please get in touch with me. i know most here are waiting for a comment, well i'll throw in one - the text installer is still there and the GUI installer ROCKS :-) Regards, - vihan

Hello All, The NGO that Krishnakant is assisting in converting to Linux, plans to buy 4 laptops that will be used for demonstration sessions in multimedia as well as web, graphics and office applications. So the lappys have to run proper sound as well as video. Krish is right now in Kerala so I am posting this message on their behalf. Those who have recently purchased laptops and are running linux properly on them, please give their suggestions and opinions for lappys that install linux out of the box. Last time Krish and his team had a tough time getting linux up on 102 ggc with dual core processors. So this time we are playing safe. DSDT and ACPI

Hello All, I was checking out DSDT and ACPI on the net and found that many BIOS manufacturers are giving incomplete ACPI tables for on-board hardware. http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/index.php ACPI was meant to make hardware compatible with different OSes through a common interface. So if the tables are broken and yet everything works fine in M$ then is it because M$ gets the other incomplete half to make it fully complete? Something other distros will not get? internet connection through mobile in laptop

Hi Friends, I want to connect my laptop to internet through mobile phone or data card. But the problem is that I don't have much knowledge of it. I tried to collect the informations on service providers from net. But I didn't get anything in details. What I have heared is that Tata Indicom has better offer for it. And its speed is also much better as compared to others. Before I try myself I want to get some important details on it from all of you. I am using Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy im my Dell inspiron 640m laptop. It could also be the heatsink has dried up. this is a common issue, do you hear any specific sounds when you try and put the machine on? If you want, you can get the mobo repaired too (if possible), if you are in mumbai, you can go to esskay in lamington road and give it to them. If its the heatsink paste, you can get Arctic Silver 5. Its an amazing product. Just make sure you read the online application manual. A single drop (size of uncooked grain of rice) is generally good enough for a p4 system. Not to mention it brings down the core temperature upto 8-10 degrees when you clean the fan + apply this. The cooler your machine, the faster/better it performs. Alternatively if you are considering a new system, amd's are okay, but if you want to be future proof, the core 2 duo would be a better bet. AMD64 gives you the 64 architecture, but its still officially an emulated architecture.Unless you went for the opterons and stuff. The core2 would give you the benefits of SMP (if enabled in your kernel). I normally prefer AMD products to Intel (from the early 700mhz duron, and more with the t-birds and even more since the athlons), have always favoured the underdogs, but bottom line is still performance. But this would however mean a bit more expenses now, as compared to performance you gain in the long run. Problem checking /home with fsck

hi, A few days ago I faced a strange problem when I booted my laptop which runs Dapper on an i-386 and it went for a file system scan after 30 mounts it detected file system errors in root partition which got solved when I ran fsck from the recovery shell but the problem in my /home partition persisted Everytime I restarted the laptop it gave the following lines: buffer i/o error on sectors contiguously from 2661645 (i hope i m not missing any digit) This took 20 minutes because it was going line by line for each location Then I tried to fix the prolem in recovery mode to see what was happening WHAT I FOUND OUT WAS There was a problem for which "ide: error not recognised" was returned,and then SeekDriveReady returned error in the LBA sector...What else could go wrong was the question? Then it logged me in and strangely I found everything was working fine even configurations in my home directory.... So the first thing I did was in fstab i removed check of /home so tht it doesnt exasperate me for 20 mins filling my screen with buffer i/o error n then location counting....................... I will probably check it again with parted because fsck failed again for those sectors Now can anyone has any idea about an idea tht what might be wrong n everything is fine so it is worth bothering or should I go n sue Acer for a new hard disk cos my warranty covers me till mid JUNE.... Password less scp

Greetings, I have been facing this problem for the last couple of days. I have 2 remote Linux Servers located at Mumbai and chennai. I need to copy files to my other machine in the night. Problem is that scp command asks for password on every execution. redhat knowledge base ( http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_45_8645.shtm) has highligted a way to use scp command w/o any password. Despite me using their steps, i am unable to do the same. Can some one help me ??? Rgds Gopi

hello, I am going to try an experiment with printer sharing. I will like to know how to share a printer installed on a fedora machine? by the way aside from printer I had one more doubt. if I share a folder of a fedora machine via samba, is there any thing additional I need to do for accessing it from another fedora machine? The whole system was assembled in Oct 2004 Recently my pc stopped working and I was told that it is a motherboard problem and needs to be replaced. Now I am looking for a mobo+processor combo and many friends suggested AMD64 based processors. Points to be considered 1. My usage is limited to basic office applications, surfing, songs, videos, chat etc ie a desktop user. 2. I need to run some games on it for my kid and as such also need XP as my primary OS 3. Being a linux enthu most of my usage is on a Linux distro. 4. I also try out various new distros. Is it advisable to go for a AMD processor and motherboard combo. If yes---What are the suitable configs (AMD+mobo) If no----- What are the alternatives (Pentium etc) Thanks Ninad

I see that kword allows you to read a pdf file, however it doesn't let you export it back to pdf. apologies for improper use of the language, was used to the sms lingo. extremely sorry. i have reframed my issue:- i had installed kubuntu recently n then ubuntu too(both from the cd), and in both, i could not use the internet, oculd not open web sites. i downloaded the sify installer for linux, dn followed te instructions as was written in the manual/readme file. i set the ip, dns everything but i still could not use the internet.when i logged in, it woud simply show the timestamp ,nothing further. could u help me out pls i got the reply when "ping"ed the gateway, but when i tried logging in using the sify installer, it would simply not connect, it is supposed to show my account details,etc., but it would simply not do so apologies again to mrugesh n vihan ____________________________________________________________________________________ Need a quick answer? Just curious, I know distro wars are bad, and well alot of people just say use what best suits you, I am just curious if anyone has had first hand experience between the 2. And if so which would be a more "debian" /apt way to go. And also have a nice clear interface to deal with out of the box, not to mention the support and ease of use. A friend of mine is strongly considering moving away from all MS products. So much so he sold his xbox 360 and has been collecting for a while to be able to buy the ps3. I told him if hes loading up linux on his ps3, he might as well get the exposure on his desktop. After all, that baby will smoke his current AMD 2000. So which distro would you guys suggest and between those 2 and if you have a specific reason why, would be nice so i can tell him. Also if i could grab a DVD off someone (maybe couriered) would be nice. Else I could just download it and have it in a week. Thanks, Satish
