Sending a file through SMS.

Hi. We have a unique requirement. We have some unix/linux servers which generate a very small status file every hour. We are then required to SMS this status to some people. Is there any way we can automate this process? The recipients cell is on the Reliance network. Basically, we need to sms a linux text file to a reliance number every hour. Any suggestions? Hello All, I was surfing the web for information on printer sharing and came across this gem below. All those who are new to printing in linux *must* read this page. It even gives tips to set up printers in command line. Another trick is that you can use the web based setup like going to address 'localhost:631' in command line too using the Lynx command line browser. Simply type 'lynx localhost:631' at the command prompt. Even those who have only one computer should definitely try these modes of setup. Its fun and a good learning experience. Hi, Is it a cultural issue? Do we need someone to tell us what to do? What are other reasons for not many Indians in the global FOSS scenery? Or are we shy to talk about what we are doing? See Suparna's example, most of us didn't know we had such an important contributor from India who could take Alan Cox's place at FOSS.IN and Alan Cox recognizing that we made the right choice? It is a case of innovation being killed due to complacency. 2) As a society, there is a lot of pressure on people to be successful immediately; and success here means making money. This means that if one were to tread the road not taken, one has to withstand the pressure from friends, family, relatives blah blah blah. What adds to this is the lack of knowledge about FOSS and such things among the common folks (read one's parents, relatives etc). 3) The whole atmosphere around is counterproductive to innovation and risk taking. Those who fail are not looked upon well by the Indian society. What matters to the society in India is success; the means does not matter. 3) We also are not trained to think in a creative manner. Succumbing to authority comes more natural to Indians rather than being free and think freely. Of course there are exceptions, but in general as a rule. Hi, Can we make it a practice|rule to NOT respond to threads that are marked Commercial, especially potentially inflammatory responses? We could have some kind of automated filter or something that blocks off replies to commercial threads. We could follow two simple rules: 1) Moderate Commercial tagged emails so that there is no spam coming in 2) Disallow replies to commercial threads. Any inquiries can be made off-list. Probably a bit more work for the mods but most off-the-line threads seem to spawn themselves from Commercial threads of late. Finally managed to get my hands on some P2 350s with 64 MB and 4 GB. CDROM thrown in too. (atleast in one of them). it has 98 for now, but planning to use a stripped down version of ubuntu. if there was ever such a thing. My basic (and probably only requirements are) 1) Wine 2) The two browsers. FF and IE. 3) a teeny .exe application that will be run over wine just like IE. Am pretty sure the above config should meet those needs, but is there any further stripping i need to do while installing the standard ubuntu 6.06 dapper drake to make it more lightweight? thanks abhi __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Google Earth problem.

Hello, I have recently moved to GNU/Linux, I recently installed Google Earth and iam unable to change the display to show up completely to my desktop resolution (1280x1024). It just shows up half way. Any ideas? Everything else working perfectly or i just do not know if anything is malfunctioning. Background: Newbie yet not so newbie user. Been exposed to linux since rh 5.3 but limited to just basic functionality and have moved to linux completely only now. If there is any more information you would like to have please let me know, onboard i810 intel 865 chipset, 2.4 GHz, 256 mb ram, swap around 700mb. Thank you in advance. Sachin G. Using another ``software" sorted it out ;-) i had heard about a hardware level hack for DVD players, i.e your standard DVD player is set to a default region(normally the one in which the DVD was manufactured), apparently the guys to supplied the player told us about this AND about the hack(which was essentially doing some soldering on the DVD logic board), and boom i had a region free DVD player. i don't know if we will be so lucky with Blue Ray DVD's, but luckly the alternative HD DVD is a little less restrictive. There's no harm in using the designer, but some advantages of manual coding are - (a) You have absolute control over code, (b) Well written code is self documenting, so you have a list of exactly what changes you have made to default properties of each widget and (c) This may not be important in many situations, but your own code tends to be smaller and neater than the generated code. I sometimes use the designer to do an initial layout and then copy and paste modified bits into my final code. This is especially helpful when you're still learning the relevant calls for various properties of widgets. Of course, doing it manually negates the advantage of having a separate and easily modifiable file for the GUI components, but I personally find the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. BTW, there isn't a problem with "manually it would be very hard to place stuff at proper positions" because Qt uses layouts like Java unlike say Visual Basic. So usually one doesn't position things using coordinates, just specifies the hierarchy. For example you're telling it that there is a dialog containing a frame containing a horizontal layout containing 3 buttons and an image. Actually compared to drawing out a dialog box in VB, using the Qt designer is a little more complicated because of this. But the initial complexity pays some nice dividends for both the end-user and the programmer: automatic widget positioning and layout allows easy resolution-independence, simple resizable windows and ultimately convenient portability. P.S. I'm wondering if this thread isn't getting a bit too far off topic for the list. BTW, comp.lang.python is a very useful resource for this sort of stuff. The script is something like this... grep searchtext file | cut -f 1,3,7,8 I want to save the values returned by cut into 4 different variables. Can anyone suggest a method to save these values into multiple variables? You no longer use "import qt" The library has been split functionally and you typically use something like "from PyQt4 import QtCore, QtGui" There are many other differences from previous versions and when I switched directly from 2.13 to 4.0 I got quite a shock - all older programs need significant work to be fixed. Since you're starting from scratch, make sure that you use documentation or books that are up-to-date and refer to Qt 4.x, otherwise you're going to get very confused. Problem installing mysql on RHEL 4

I am trying to install MySQL-server-4.0.16-0 on RHEL 4 but am getting the error shown below. I also tried again downloading and installing but same problem. MySQL-client-4.0.16-0 is also installed. Sify broadband connection on Linux RHES 4

Dear List, Do any of you use Sify Broadband Connection on Linux RHES 4?If anybody is using can you tell me how do u use it? I ve got the connection from local cable operator who has given me one .exe which when installed creates one icon on desktop and when opened that application need to mention username and password to connect to the internet. On windows i m able to use internet but i want to use on Linux.The local cable operator has denied any support on Linux.So anybody in the list can guide me plz for the same. -- Friends are like an treasure,so if you want to become rich in your life make as many friends as possible in the life. The only tragic part was that you HAD to run it as root AARG !!! A pity the authors never bothered studying SUID, SGID and the concept of running a service as a user with a /bin/false shell. They even created a very badly written init script ;-) On windows i m able to use internet You have my utmost sympathies :-) but i want to use on Linux.The local > cable operator has denied any support on Linux.So anybody in the list can > guide me plz for the same. When i had used Sify, they generally pointed me to go to a local page on their network where you could download their client for Win, GNU/Linux and even Mac OS X. hello all, this may or may not be considered off topic. actually the subject line seams to be off topic but this is some thing to do with a program I am writing which needs to send emails out of the box. I want to know if imap is used by all popular email servers. I will need to send emails to gmail, yahoo, msn (unfortunately) and rediffmail. may be sify also but that's not sure. so when I write my program in python and asuming it is running on gnu/linux, should I program for imap given the above email servers? also do let me know what else will I need to have on my linux box, msmtp? or any thing else? I asked on the python list and they say nothing is really needed. thanks, Krishnakant
