1) Can I run my computer without the CMOS battery? 2) My computer BIOS asks for setting date and time (when I switch off power supply from the spike guard)? 3) I have replaced the CMOS battery a couple of times but the problem seems to exist even now. 4) Do I have to replace / upgrade the Motherboard BIOS? Candidates should have any of the following qualifications: - B.E.; B. Tech.; B.C.A.; M.C.A.; B.Sc. / M.Sc. (Computer / Information Technology) Degree or equivalent with minimum 50% marks. Candidate should be aware of Object Oriented Programming (preferably in Python), familiarity with Web Engineering (XHTML, XML, JAVA Script), and databases (preferably in Zope, RDBMS). A candidate familiar with free software development methodology (GNU/LINUX, CVS, Sourceforge, Savannah and such collaborative platforms, etc.), additional experience in e-learning platforms (Moodle, Jabber, etc) and content management systems (Plone, Wikimedia, Drupal, etc.) will be preferred. Competence in Indian language computing will be useful. The position is purely temporary, for one year in the first instance and extendable by another six months. I found that this package is not in Debian and I just did ITP (bug filling procedure to create a Debian package) for that. I am also with in touch of Ubuntu packagers. Home Icon starts XMMS

Hi all, Until a few days ago, clicking on the Home icon on the desktop opened the home directory. Don't know what happened but now clicking on it launches XMMS player. If I right click on Home icon and choose Properties to associate application and without making any changes just close it, then it opens XMMS and some 2 secs later it opens the home directory? Can anyone advise with fixing a problemon my linux mailserver. a tech came in to change internet access from cable to dsl. he altered the config and the local mail is not delivered to user mailboxes.it is ina the mailque with destination address which are wrong n are not sent out for eg local mail which should come to use mailbox is addressed to use(a)localhost.domain.com. can anyone advise a remedy?

So I wrote them e-mail and then they resetted the PIN within 3-4 hrs. Then I used IE and it worked. Was able to create certificate. Exported it, imported to Firefox and Adobe reader for Linux, signed forms and used it on MCA site (Forms submitted by IE as site was using ActiveX) and also used it for Income tax e-filing (worked great with Firefox) Amish.

I am trying to configure LTSP client on Knoppix, Server is configured and when try to boot client it say ............. ..Me192.168.1.3 Server 192.168.1.1 Loading 192.168.1.1:/lts/vmlinuz-2.4.26-ltsp-2 TFTP error 2 (Forbidden Directory) Unable to load file <sleep> <abort> Probing for pci nic ... Probing for isa nic.... but vmlinuz file is present over there. Before booting client work station have you tried fetching boot image using tftp client? As for performace, you can happily run 20+ workstation on a server like IBM Netfinity M10. Though have enough RAM on server and on workstation depending on your requirement. Dear all, How does one change the boot.ini on a computer? The problem is this: The machine had Windows XP running originally with Ubuntu Dapper Drake running on a partition. So a user has to choose the OS from the Grub menu. Now after some boot files in XP got corrupted, the computer refused to boot. The technician did a back-up installation of XP and now the machine works okay GRUB, Ubuntu and all. According to the engineer this is a usual problem with XP. He has advised editing boot.ini to make Linux the default OS but he warned that it can be done only once. Also that if Linux is made default Windows XP cannot be opened, etc. So how does one configure boot.ini so that the computer begins working even with the XP files corrupted, etc. The person who owns the computer wants both Windows XP and Linux on one machine for the near future. Maybe make GRUB run on Ubuntu OS instead of Windows XP at present. Pardon if I sound like verbally challenged!!!! Shiv Kumar

I am having Blue tooth in my laptop. I don't have any idea of which model I will have to buy. I also don't have the idea of which connection I will have to take for it. Can any one give me any suggestion for it? It will be very helpfull if I get the whole details of it. I am waiting for getting replies from all of you.

[OT] Anyone bought Class 2 Digital Certificate from MTNL Trust Line?

I have been trying to purchase a Class 2 Digital Certificate from MTNL Trust Line (http://mtnltrustline.com/products/online.htm) but no success. In the evening hours webra.mntltrustline.com seems to be offline and during daytime I get to the agreement page, I accept the agreement but then get time outs. Problem is without an online pre-registration number one cannot send the paper form to MTNL. The help line numbers (toll and tool free) are busy whenever I call in. Has anyone bought Class 2 Digital Certificate from MTNL Trust Line? If so, pls. let us know. TIA, -- akk

The easiest solution - Use GRUB to boot both Ubuntu and WinXP (/dev/hda is your IDE hard disk and /dev/hda2 is the root/boot partition of your Ubuntu install). 1. Boot Ubuntu Live from the CD. 2. Mount the root/boot partition e.g. on /mnt/hda 3. sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/hda /dev/hda 4. Modify /mnt/hda/boot/grub/menu.lst to include your WinXP partition e.g. title Windows XP chainloader (hd0,0)+1 assuming WinXP is on the 1st partition of the first hard disk. HTH Arun Khan

Hi, My Pentium 4 system is officially declared dead. I wish to replace it with a Core 2 Duo system. I wanted to know which motherboards are compatible with Linux. I would like to go in for a genuine Intel motherboard. The processor I am thinking of is Intel Core 2 Duo E6300/6400/6600/6700. I dont know which motherboard is most compatible with Linux ( FC5/6 ) specifically. The only Intel boards I could find were: - DG965RYCK - DG965WHMKR What would be the cost of the entire system with 512MB / 1GB of DDR2 RAM? All from Lamington Road. This motherboard has 1 IDE and 4 SATA ports. The IDE is powered by the Marvell PATA chipset which is not yet very well supported in the Linux world so when you connect a CD/DVD drive here, the installation doesn't find the installation CD/DVD. I've tried Knoppix 5.0.1, Ubuntu 6.06 and Suse 10.1 64-bit. The net suggests booting by giving the all-generic-ide option to the kernel but I have not been successful in getting it to recognize my DVD yet. It requires a kernel in which the generic ide driver is built-in rather than a module and I haven't checked if that's the case with the distros I've tried. I'll probably get a SATA harddisk so I can use the DVD on a SATA port using my SATA to PATA adapter and bypass this entire hassle. Hello All, I got this idea when I observed a client's SIFY connection. He wanted to have SIFY on his laptop so once the IP settings were done, there was a local LAN link of SIFY to download their dialer from SIFY's local network. Since the link was local LAN, it took about 2 seconds to download a 2 Mb file. Now with wireless I was wondering if we can have local wireless web servers in Mumbai where people can bring their laptops to hot spots and download linux softwares like latest distro ISOs, rpms, debs and tar gzipped files. The webserver will be simple tiny devices with hard disks, like the one in HBCSE. Their output can be given to a wireless AP. There will be no link with the internet so no wiring or ISP billing. The two devices are small in size and low on power consumption. They can be installed in coffee shops, book stalls, libraries etc. The devices can be provided free to the shops through institutional or corporate or collective funding with the condition that the shop will leave it on the whole day at his cost of electricity. The shop benefits from more visitors and good business like selling beverages and snacks, books etc. The devices will run independently and once in a few months the disks are updated with the latest distros and softwares through....say wireless itself. Just run a predefined package and wait till it says 'ok its done'. The advantage of this system is that local LAN speeds are much higher than internet so downloads will be much faster and one can simply log into the local web page and select the distro for download. Since there is no link with the net, security is good and the server anyway does not carry any sensitive information. Regards, Rony. nokia 7710 with wdial

Hey All , I was wondering if anyone managed to get the 7710's modem initialized with wvdial . I got the SE700i and the Nokia 6151 working . But the 7710 is different . I shows up an icon on the phone indicating that the modem is activated when the phone is connected to the dialer in m$ even without starting the dial out process . How do I replicate this in Linux . Linux on Acer 2428NWXCi . [Report]

Hello All, The Acer 2428NWXCi comes with Linpus Linux pre-installed. On starting it up for the first time I was wondering what type of desktop I will be logged into and to my surprise, it booted up into a root command prompt. It would not recognize the 'startx' command. No wonder it has 'Limitted functionality' for those who expect a full fledged desktop environment. The os was replaced with Kubuntu 6.06 LTS and everything was detected smoothly. The wireless router is yet to arrive but the wireless network icon is present along with the ethernet so at least the device is properly installed. The grey area was the video player Kaffeine' Everytime I would try to play a vcd, it would go into an indefinite processing with no other function possible. I had to force the laptop to reboot twice on running kaffeine. There was not much choice available for kde in apt-get, so I installed VLC. It plays the vcd but sound is periodically clear and broken as it plays. So multimedia is a grey area for kubuntu 6.06 on Acer 2428. Kubuntu has a ready battery monitor icon in the system tray and it gives good indications of battery life, power mode and battery mode. The Acer 2428 is a good on system performance. It has a 14" wide screen. It runs pretty fast just like my P4 2.4 Ghz. + 256 Mb RAM. Battery life is 2.5 hrs+. It comes with a lovely carry bag that even lenovo does not give for its expensive laptops. I like the fact that Acer gives its best even to the lower end products. HDD is 60 Gb. Help for Xine installation

Hello all, I use RH9 and recently downloaded following files for Xine. xine-lib-1.1.2.tar.bz2 xine-ui-0.99.4.tar I made a directory and opened these files. At command prompt both as root and as user I gave following commands. ./configure make make install. After each of these commands the system does something as apparently the terminal shows the data being read, scrolling upwards. As per instructions on Xine site and other help file, it means I'm done with installation and I only need to type "xine" at prompt to start the program. Alas! I get the message no command found. Whats being wrong here? Frustrated, I got libxine1-1.1.3-061202.i686.rpm. It installed but no success with xine command. Reinstalling doesnt help as it says the rpm is already installed. Then I give rpm -e filename command as root or user. Now it says there's no such package to uninstall. Whats happening?
