What you are asking for is a really nice idea, but I think we can create some easy solutions within existing and popular linux desktop environments.. hence maintaining compatiblity.. for example, Is this close to what you are talking about? http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=29692 or maybe you can use this as a starting point, and amend it suitably in any way you deem fit. maybe there are simlar ideas on having some kisk mode "animated desktop" on gnome/xfce too.. ? otherwise, multiple desktops also give us an ability to configure the UI in any way.. for example we can rename desktop 1,2,3,4 to somethng like multimedia, internet, Office, games.. etc.. and then have very large and visible, easily identifiable, relevant icons on each of them.. (just an idea)

NFS mount problem between 2.6.17-3 and 2.4.24

sarge with linux-2.6.17-3 as an nfs server. Another machine with woody and linux-24.4.24 fails to mount the exports from the sarge machine. mount simply hangs without errors. syslog on sarge says "rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from xxx.yyy.zz.aa:868 for /xxyyzz (/xxyyzz)" tried rpc.mountd with --no-nfs-version 3. any ideas? -- Rgds JTD

A Desktop Concept.

Hello All, Yesterday I visited an old couple who had problems with their pc. While the problem was minor, I noticed that they were very unfamiliar to computers and were using it only to send and receive mail from their children abroad. They had noted everything down in a letter pad and would refer to it and try to figure out their way on the screen. The email program too was difficult to navigate as it had a lot of options and buttons. This kept me thinking about a desktop thats totally different from the current windows clones and is totally a reflection of real life. I recollect Rajeev demonstrating a file browser like that in the wireless LUG meet. Later when I met Krish, he told me about gnowsis http://www.gnowsis.org/ but I just visited their site today and find that it still has standard interfaces and is more dedicated to relating data rather than an innovative interface to access data. So how about a totally different desktop that actually looks like a real life situation. For example, it will have simple but large and realistic looking icons for letters/envelopes = email, documents = office suite, music system = music player, television = movie player etc. Now come the main part. There should be no windows as we use today. An email program should open up graphics of a full size page with a pen on it. The user only types on that page and then presses an adjacent big button that reads 'Put letter in envelope'. Then the letter folds itself and puts itself inside a big envelope. The envelope then faces the user waiting for an email address. The email address appears as its typed and in bold letters across the envelope. Then the user chooses from 2 big buttons that read 'Post this letter' or 'Post it later'. If 'Post this letter' is selected, the envelope will drop itself inside a big red post box. Similarly, a real life photo graphics environment can be used in place of windows for office, music, video and other applications. While all this may look very silly for us, it will be a big boon for those users who feel intimidated by computers and dislike the window environment. I am sure there are projects going on in this direction but if we can be first in linux to do it, it will give linux a quantum leap into home desktops. Since linux is secure, once a firewall is running, linux will not even need an anti-virus to constantly update. This system in other Indian languages should become very popular with the rural population who has no knowledge of computers or even those who are semi literate. Dear all, I wonder if this problem was caused by tinkering with Firefox's settings to enable quicker browsing. Now the entire Ubuntu OS has become unstable. I get the following error message during booting: /dev/hda7: unexpected inconsistency; Run fsck manually... An automatic file system check of the root file system failed..... A manual fsck must be performed, then file system rebooted.... so how to perform manual fsck? also there is something about badblocks on the Internet. I have heard about RHCE certification being one of the hottest in 2006. Seeking advice if joining a coaching class at RH authorised centre is MANDATORY which I think charges quite a bit. how to enable root user with password prompting in knoppix.

hello, I got my knoppix cd install on the hard disk. so now knoppix runs almost like ubuntu does as in works without any super user parssword from my hard disk. but now I want the system to ask me for a password when I log in and for root as well when I try to su in the bash prompt. how can I enable both this things? HSBC online services not working in Ubuntu/Firefox

I opened an account with HSBC a few days back for my salary deposits. The online@HSBC services are not working in Ubuntu/Firefox. It requires IE 5.0+ or NS Communicator. I tried fiddling with the User Agent string (strangely, most of the IE User Agent strings I found on the net looked like Mozilla/<some stuff>) but to no avail. I've submitted a complaint form but I'm not expecting them to listen to it. Is there any way other than booting into Windows or using IE from Wine? Other than the fact that I would be using, well, IE or win32, I would lose face in front of my sister whom I berate for carrying out *her* online banking business in win32/IE :-( -- Rohit V. GPL Violations: DLINK bites the dust

Dlink was one of the crooked companies that violated the gpl and was taken to court by Harold Welte. They lost the case. Their defence shows their crookedness and greed. Dlink contended that linux indulged in price fixing by keeping price at zero and hence was indulging in monopolistic behaviour. Therfore by magic Dlink was allowed to violate the terms of the GPL. The court said that irrespective of the allegation of price fixing, Dlink ceased to be a licencee of the gpl if it violtates any clause of the gpl. Case was filed by Harold Welte of iptables fame. Krishnakant could u put this in the press. This is a great victory cause it immediately fixes all responsibility on the distributor without exceptions due to alleged gpl. Time to boycott dlink. Alternative is DAX for switches and low end network stuff. I belive that i have found another gpl violation from one of the largest IT houses in the country. They had developed an embedded kernel on arm for another multinational. The multinational's local contact says that thay dont have the source cause the IT house did not give them the source, and seemed to be unaware of the gpl requirements. Further investigation continues. I am not disclosing names until I am very sure. The company has already lost an order of Rs.30 lacs. If it can play dirty with the gpl it will most certainly do the same to me. -- Rgds JTD

how can I create openoffice .odt files in emacs?

hello all, here is one more strange yet interesting query. if I want to use emacs to create, format, open and save .odt files from openoffice word processor, how can I accomplish it? I will be first interested to create odt documents and then even spreadsheets. I find emacs desktop very comfortable to use. I don't know how good it looks on the desktop but liked it very much. now if I can use it for createing formatted documents and spread sheets, nothing like it. I am already seeking some help for browsing internet with emacspeak. hope some one will drop in with the help for that as well. thanking all. Krishnakant.

Debian 3.1 rocks

Hello All, This is a mini installation report on Debian 3.1. The linux26 kernel option was selected at boot prompt and Debian 3.1 was installed with a 2.6 kernel. The system was P4 2.4 GHz. and Intel 845 GEBV2 mobo. During installation itself the packages were updated from the net ( 120 MB). It detected the video with vesa drivers upto 800 x 600 resol. and sound was detected too. Printer setup was tricky as the kde could not initiate a setup for lpd printers. After a lot of googling I came across this unusual method of setting up a printer and it worked. I downloaded packages using synaptec. http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=8302 Another problem was that sound did not work for the other user created for my family members. I looked up /etc/groups and added the new user in the line for 'audio' but still no good. Then after more googling I found this useful link http://www.andreas-janssen.de/debian-tipps-sarge.html#a36 I downloaded the latest alsa-base alsa-oss and the new user too can access sound. Best part was that the 'totem' movie player could play VCDs and DVDs directly without the usual extra downloads. Still I installed the win32 codecs and libdvdcss later. The usb pen drive was also detected, though I had to manually mount it, but it was fun. In synaptec package manager, I came across a kernel for speech called speakup. The details are given below. Krish can try out this kernel for speech processing. The description is given below. "...Linux kernel image for version 2.4.27-speakup This package contains the Linux kernel image for version 2.4.27-speakup, the corresponding System.map file, and the modules built by the packager. It also contains scripts that try to ensure that the system is not left in a unbootable state after an update. If you wish to update a bootdisk, or to use a bootloader to make installing and using the image easier, we suggest you install the latest fdutils (for formatting a floppy to be used as boot disk), and LILO, for a powerful bootloader. Of course, both these are optional. Kernel image packages are generally produced using kernel-package, and it is suggested that you install that package if you wish to create a custom kernel from the sources. This kernel package contains a Linux kernel patched with speakup, a screen reader for the Linux console. Speakup currently supports the following hardware speech synthesizers: * DoubleTalk PC/LT * LiteTalk * Accent PC/SA * Speakout * Artic Transport * Audapter * Braille 'N Speak / Type 'N Speak * Dectalk External and Express * the Apollo2 NOTE: We don't claim this drivers to be stable, use them on your own risk...." All in all, Debian 3.1 is a good distro for those who want to get some installation experience. Its not too difficult. The online helping community is simply fantastic with so much online help available. This distro rocks. well access concentrator is just server on the LAN which is offering PPPOE services. So there can be many on the LAN , and you need to select one. SO.... After you install rp-pppoe-3.8 , run the following command, "/sbin/pppoe -A " You will get a list of access concentrators and services on the command prompt., then make a note which one is yours.... Then , instead of "go-gui" ..just run "go" from the rp-pppoe directory, this will start the PPPOE dialer from command prompt without the GUI.. Also , if you need more assistance , you can give me a call, contact me off the list.
