Not only because the FSD predates the BSD, but also because you need to know about something in order to criticise it. If someone is fond of ESR, BSD, OSD, Bruce Perens, etc. I have no issues as long as they do not indulge in berating 'others', where 'others' are people from whom ESR and Bruce Perens have derived their ideas. All that I meant was, someone who uses the word FOSS, meaning Free & Open Source Software, in his signature must have read the GNU GPL. One paragraph at least. If you have not and think RMS has lost his relevance then kindly use OSS instead of FOSS. You are gravely misleading people. Why so? I think so, because as Devdas corectly pointed out, the concept of Free Software predates the concepts of Open Source Software, and all major proponents of Open Source like Bruce Perens, Eric S. [OT] An appeal

As many of you know FSF India is organizing GPL V3 Conference at Bangalore, (http://gplv3.gnu.org.in). The response to the conference was overwhelming, and we already recieved registrations beyond the capacity. We thank you all for the enthusiastic response. Due to recent increased security restrictions on both International and national airlines, some of our guests were diverted to other less restrictive airlines which allowed laptops and books. Making these alternative arragements to our guests caused doubling of the expenses, and cancellation expenses. In some cases refunds were also not possible. As a result FSF India does not have these extra funds at this moment. We thought of bringing this to the notice of free software community, and explore the possibility of support. This is an appeal to contribute to FSF India. Since we do not have enough time to make alternative arrangements we seek your active support at this needy hour. Even if the support is small from each of you, if more people give a small sum, we will be able to make sure this will happen. Even after allowing all SSL_ports and Safe_ports (this was done using Webmin, so I did not see the /etc/squid.conf, we are unable to use IRC on ports 6667, 8000. Irssi says "temporary failure in name resolution", while GAIM says "proxy connection error 503". However Yahoo! and Jabber are working using GAIM AFTER opening the ports in Squid. Jabber on the usual 5222, while Yahoo! on 8001. At this point I have a feeling that the IRC ports are blocked in the firewall too, because I had heard our sysadmin (when the network was set-up) remark that all IRC activity will be blocked. He made no remark about Jabber or Yahoo!. I do use a HTTP tunneller, corkscrew, to do ssh into public servers. Regarding ssh, one needs BOTH corkscrew and the opened ports in Squid to do anything at all. In a scenario where only the Squid acls are relaxed but tunneling not done, ssh also says "Temporary failure in name resolution". At this point I have a feeling that one needs to tunnel GAIM like ssh. But following the instructions in http://www.http-tunnel.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=1227&, I get "proxy connection error 503" for IRC and "Couldn't connect to host" for Jabber (GTalk). Please note that this was done with the Squid acls relaxed, whereby Jabber and Yahoo were connecting without tunneling, but IRC was not. FC5 Installation

I have compaq Pressario with ATI Radeon Xpress200 display card,160GB SATA HDD,256 MB DDR2,AMI Bios V3.07,CD-R/RW/DVD Read. I have successfully installed Win-XP and now trying to install FC5. While installation it is displaying 'installing sata_sil driver' and the installation continues. But at the time of partitioning it shows "No Hard Drive Found". Instead of which if i go for FC4 or Mandriva Linux 2006 , the installation goes cool. I have received DVD's of FC4 & FC5 with LFY's MAY-06 issue. What will be the reason & how can I solve this problem to install FC5 ?. -- Jagdish R.Chhailkar

The subject line indicates something, that might have been discussed in the past, over several forums/mailing lists/boards etc. But, I intend to initiate this thread after reading an article in Business Today,which concludes Open Office, is ready for acceptance among many and Mozilla Firefox, seems to replace Internet Explorer for a few Windows users. It also speaks about GNU/Linux and below is the excerpt It states "Why has Linux never taken off? Simple; it's terribly easy to set up if you have a BSc or BTech degree ...." Also "there is no _one_ Linux anymore" (You have Windows XP) "...15 major releases (distros) and many of them don't work with each other.." So does this mean it GNU/Linux is only for Geeks? GMail (on GAIM) simpy said 'port x tunneling not allowed', while Yahoo (on GAIM) gave a 'write error' for port 80. Other messages were the same for GTalk. GAIM would start working out of the box, if the ports are opened. I know this since the ports were opened temporarily and they just worked. Let me tell this list, that in the period when GAIM was working people (including most Windoze users) became a huge fan of GAIM. GAIM was preferred over and above the GTalk and Yahoo! Dont we use third party IM clients? God knows what they are doing with our passwords. It might take some time before a back door is discovered, and thats equally bad. What about the alternate email IDs these people ask for. Yahoo! might not abuse its own ID but might do so with a GMail ID. I am not accusing, but I am just curious. You have said these same things last time this whole discussion cropped up. But where is the alternative? I stop using Meebo. Fine. So how do I IM. Let me tell you that this IMing issue is one of the main reasons why people don't shift to a Free OS completly. And if they DO Meebo is their only saviour. Atleast the only one I know of. I know this is getting a bit personal, but I strongly disagree with such browbeating attitude. The problem caused by this single piece of unwanted mail is NOTHING compared to the huge amount of OT discussions we have.
