As you all know, last month we launched a new initiative called CommunitySpeak where we pose a question to various ILUG mailing lists and publish the top five responses (selected by our technical editors) in the magazine. Thanks to all those who responded to last month's question on "why a majority of the world's top 10 supercomputers are powered by Linux". The best five among the responses received are to be published in the July 2006 issue of LFY. The selected responses were sent by Vishnu Vyas (Chennai), S R Parthan (Chennai), R Subramanian (Chennai), Manu Konchady (Bangalore) and P Sriram (Chennai). Thanks again for your participation. Ping capture tool

I'm working on Network in which Mumbai is central location with 10-12 locations connected over WAN . I'm looking out for for tool which can capture ping report (latency ) between Mumbai to that particular location . Currently I'm using a batch file which captures ping 10 times and creates a TXT file (ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -n 10 >cochin.txt) . not able to view Inbox on kmail

Hi , We have LTS on a debian 3.1 system Today, the /home partition got full due to some reason. And ever since that happened..every body on the server gor there kmail's crashed. After we removed unwanted files from /home , and when every one logged back in, there inbox was empty.Every body's..but the rest of the folders were there as it is. We can see the meessages in the /home/user/Mail/inbox/cur folder, but somehow Kmail is not able to view them.. Can any one help with this? Regards, Boskey -- TAC Support Team

I have seen some attempts from India to do creative things, but on the whole depressingly little - certainly too little for the kind of interest levels and keenness one sees on this and other lists. I don't know what the issue is, but instead of moaning about Gates' failures, we should look a little inward and evolve a way to bring out something better for ourselves. Vickram

fc3 (tecra 8100) and fc4 (desktop) function keys settings

I am using FC3 on a tecra 8100. Connected via ssh to a remote machine running an application written in c-tree. it requires the use of various function keys. F1 pulls up Help instead of doing what app wants it to do. F3 just spits out a character. F10 acts like the Alt key. Same for Fc4 on a std desktop. All function keys work as they are supposed with putty over winXp. Any ideas on how to resolve this where F1, F3, F10 do what the application want them to do and not what is predefined? Also, i can scp files from remote server as I am sshing into it. Help / installing a new ethernet card / Gentoo

Hi, I've had gentoo 2005.1 with a 2.6.15-r1 gentoo kernel installed for the past 6 months. Recently, my ethernet card conked off and after lots of testing, I was advised by my 'knowledgeable' cablenet operator to get a new one - so I did. I've got an intex lan card with an Realtek 8139d chipset now and I got a drivers cd along with that. I tried compiling the source for the module which they've provided in that CD but was unsuccessful. I used to have a Pronet card with a Realtek 8139 chipset and that was autodetected during installation. What I was wondering was if there is any other way to go about installing this new ethernet card and also unregister the old one; as during boot it gives an error saying that eth0 is not present or something to that effect. I tried looking up google and forums, but couldn't find much. Thanks in advance. Abhijeet

[OT] Erratic service MTNL TriBand

Looks like MTNL has joined the band wagon of crappy ISPs of India. For the past 3 days, I have been experiencing erratic net access to the "Internet." I run my own DNS (bind) - an inordinate time for a name lookup is a good indication that queries to the root servers are not going through. Usually, a reboot of the modem has solved the problem. However, today around 15:00 it got to the point that I was not able to ping the MTNL gw 59.183.63.254 assigned to the Triband subnet. Upon further investigation I found that my modem/router was not getting any dynamic IP assignment for about an hour (ATM link layer checked out OK). My connection is off the Khar(W) Exchg. You might explore a lot more, but disadvantages like inconsistency (aaj kiya, kal nahi, parson kiya, badme nahi....and so on...) time consumption is more (if you are fairly new) and have no idea of what of Windows to GNU/Linux Alternative (that's how I learnt, but that may not be the best or correct way) What you would probably require is to know which are the best sources for this. First of all very well-written JTD! Well let me narrate an incident, a real-life incident when I visited Microsoft Campus in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. It was part of our college tour, and was made possible by one of the seniors who is working in M$. I had a nice debate regarding FOSS, M$, ...., which was mainly initiated by the M$ fellas who could not stop asking which one among us though Billy to evil, thought M$ was bad, etc... During the couse of this debate, suddenly when they were pushed to a corner, they came up with the question: Why would you ever use Linux? Why would you ever use anything other than Winblows? Now what about this? Is this how employees of a company, an American company owned by a good American citizen, behave? What about the philosophies of democracy that Mr. Bush and his cronies are trying to push forward? The whole point is that M$ is not as likeable as you think. Think of a world without Winblows and you would get the logic. The whole idea of Windows making computing easy does not hold. Yeah they have definitely made it a idiot-friendly thing. But that is dangerous in the same way that driving would be a dangerous thing if you made licenses optional. The plethora of viruses and worms that we find everywhere would have been lesser if it was not for that Winblows user who so happily clicks on every mail in the mailbox, and every .exe on the floppy. Kernel panic in ubuntu

My Ubuntu install threw up a Kernel panic today. The details during start-up were as follows: <snip> [4294671.914000]crc error [4294671.915000]Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0) [4294671.915000] </snip> In the GUI startup , the display would freeze at "Loading hardware drivers..." In safe mode, it dropped me to "root@bhute" -but I had no idea what to check and rectify. Incidently, even Win XP restarted automaically. In safe mode, it restarted at the same point i.e. loading drivers. Running Ubuntu's memtest gave me some 310272 errors. And to make me more confused, the system worked all OK after the memtest. Any hints would be welcome. Incidently, Dapper froze around 10 times on my machine in two weeks. Is my RAM or HDD on the death bed? -- Rohit V. Bhute http://blog.rvbhute.org/

Installing Fedora Core on other's hard disk?

Is it ok if I install Fedora Core 5 using my computer on my friend's hard disk drive? Would my friend be able to use the OS once, he plugs it back to his system? My computer configuration is completely different than his --------------------------------- If you don't know something, its always better to learn it and then experiment with components! I had the same problem, where the system would freeze anytime. Possibly, it your RAM, but, probably, you could try testing your RAM on your friend's computer. Also, observe the amount of time your system works before freezing, for few days. Also, in the BIOS, observe the temperature of CPU and the chassis, before it freezes. My problem had its root in the motherboard. I had tested my RAM, my power supply for faults, and replaced the power supply, after a number of test's at my friend's place. But, it did not solve the problem. Ultimately, I gave my motherboard for repairing and things are normal till now! __________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Cory Doctorow, noted science fiction writer, spoke about Digital Rights Management and copyrights. Both these speeches were highly appreciated by the audience. First of all, has anybody on the list seen Revolution OS? It is a small documentary. Forgive me for not remembering what 'low-cost limited' exactly meant. But then the employees were very proud of the fact that the Gates Foundation has donated generously for the betterment of AIDS patients and so on. However on being informed that a certain Bram Moolenaar- author of vi, does organize donations for poor children in Uganda the M$ people came up with the "Why at all Linux" thing. Secondly the guys at M$ seem to be extremely satisfied with the fact that most (according to them an overwhelming majority) of the people are using Winblows. That they say is the clinching factor. They are even more pleased to note that most of my class-mates are Windoze lovers, and they are the ones to be tomorrows CEOs. However they do not mind that atleast 60% to 75% of these users use pirated copies. And today's pirates would be tomorrow's CEOs according to them. The thing is proprietary software is a pain in most cases, if not all, and M$ aggressively pursues it. My friends at BARC's Remote Handling and Robotics Division experienced a similar problem RMS had faced at MIT's AI Labs. These fellows at BARC have bought a nice digital compas from Honeywell. The demo program which apparently demonstrates how to operate the thing is a mere EXE and the code is not available. In the absence of it, nobody has got any idea how to program the thing and use it in a robot. BARC I am given to believe is central to India's fundamental R&D and this is how the situation is. The whole impression that people (Winblows users actually) get today is that Windoze is the 'standard' thing, and that GNU/Linux is the real trouble. eg., you can not install Windoze after you put on GNU/Linux, Fedora does not come with MP3 support while Windoze has no problem, etc.. People seem to miss the point that it is Windoze that overwrites the bootloader entries while GNU/Linux appends, that MP3 is patented and M$ pays for it, and so on... Regards, Debarshi

I thought they ran on some fuel too. In my opinion Rs 100-Rs150 for a really good quality magazine is not too much. Googling is ok, but having a hard copy still counts. Not everywhere in India do you get good stable Internet connections, and so using the net is still remains a pain for some. And remember the Internet also costs some amount. Lets not confuse a 'good FOSS magazine' with the ones we already have like Digit, PCQ, etc.. In my opinion they often advertise proprietary software that runs on otherwise Free OSes.
