Ping Problem

Hello All, I am quite new to Linux system. I installed Red Hat 7.1 on my home computer, which is a stand alone pc, and has no network connected. During installation my mouse was malfunctioning and I may have missed some N/w configuration screens. The problem is whenever i try pinging localhost ping 127.0.0.1 it gives this error: connect: no network found. I tried changing the NETWORKING field to "no" in the file /etc/sysconfig/network Also I checked /etc/hosts for localhost and its there. I discovered this error when I installed webmin and tried to browse to http://127.0.0.1:10000 to run it. Gurpreet, You must have copied the entire CD on the HDD first & then burn the copied contents on a blank CD...Bootable CD's cant be copied that way...Try DISKCOPY'ing the CD & it will work... Kerneld in Kernel-2.4.10/19

Hi, I am trying to compile kernel version 2.4.19-rc1 on my linux box. Presently I have REDHAT7.2 ,with Kernel2.4.7-10 . I want to have kerneld compiled in the kernel(CONFIG_KERNELD).But when I do "make config" The option for Kerneld does not come up at all. Was the option removed ?? Or am I doing something wrong ?? I checked my present installation , even that does not have /sbin/kerneld. Is kerneld removed form linux kernel 2.4 ?? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi I fail to understand how the GNU software foundation fails to provide a free downloadable library reference for C++. If there is any, please please let me know. How would a C++ programmer hope to understand the C++ library without it. regards Abhijeet

Mirror Debian packages not iso.

dear users, could someone mirror the debian dist pool instead of mirroring the iso's since, any one can download a 30 mb cd image and then install the packages he needs instead of downloading the whole cd. there is one mirror in banglore but its seems go down frequently. popularizing linux in my college

hello luggerz remember i told u abt the gnu/linux seminar in my college.. we've discussed abt the dates with the college authorities and suggest 1st week of october preferably 4th and 5th oct... comments plz.. the ppl who are gonna attend will be from the comp deptt so we want it to be a bit more technical this time, u know stuff like compiling c and java, and other programming tools and some netwroking and maybe samba n all too. If all dont grasp that much maybe some of us will.. the travel and stay of the ppl who visit us wud be totally our responsibility. the place is in distt sangli abt 8 hrs on bus from mumbai. the ppl who are interested plz reply to me off the list.. thankyou Gurpreet

Motorola SM56 modem driver for RedHat 7.3

I have recently upgraded my linux system from 7.1 to 7.3 However my modem is not working. I have an internal modem of Motorola sm56. Tried to install the rpm driver sm56_5.1_i386. While connecting it gives the message " Cannot open /dev/modem " Plz help to locate the problem.

hello i was instaling this command line mp3 player called mpeg123 and during the installation came across these "make" files... can somebody tell me what these are and how do they function?? plz suggest and reading material for learnign abt them Gurpreet
