Conti.polling Shell Script

Hi, Can a shell script contiuously poll for a specific file in a specified directory, and upon finding such a file, execute some commands. Can someone please suggest if this is possible & suggest some way to implement it. regards, Sandeep

Problem installing Linux

I'm trying to install Linux 7.1 on my friend's comp .Here is the configuration: PIII 866 ,815e Chipset,128 RAM,20 GB HDD The partition is 15+5.I deleted 5GB to make room for Linux. Windows ME is present on the 15 GB partition .Now during setup when I add mount point / in Disk Druid I get error that boot partition>1024 cylinders. I checked out Fdisk instead of Disk Druid and found that the cylinders available are in the range somwhere between 1800 to 2000 (Sorry, I forgot exact numbers). I have read that latest lilo supports >1024 cylinders .Where should I download lilo from? After downloading how can I "tell" the setup to install the latest LILO instead of it's default. One of our ilug members had similar prob and Philip had suggested : Install your system as usual, but choose not to use lilo. How do I install the system (I can't create / )? Win Virus on Linux

a few questions If i download a windows virus infected file onto a linux/windows dual boot box with linux after disabling access to my windows drives (unmounting them) is there any way this virus can cause harm to my computer. The virus is probably harmless through mail because of a stupid problem. There's an extra = at the end of the base 64 encoded file, which means it cannot be decoded, at least not by standards compliant decoders. OE may still decode it. Don't know about NSMessenger. A simple inspection of the attachment tells you that. I extracted the file, and ran strings on it. It gave me this: BFD: BFD internal error, aborting at coffcode.h line 763 in styp_to_sec_flags BFD: Please report this bug. This seems to be a problem with strings. (strings on Solaris works) I then did a file on it and found it to be a Win32 executable (surprise!). I then did a less on the file to see what was in it. Specifically, there are a lot of references to Winsock.dll and common TCP/IP errors, but I have been unable to determine if it just uses the file or tries to replace it. I believe it may be the former, though its size (173KB) seems to suggest it does a lot more than just send email. Towards the fourth quarter of the file, I found actual excel stuff. Now, look at the header of the mail: X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="----147B2E70_Outlook_Express_message_boundary" Content-Disposition: Multipart message and the attachment headers: ------147B2E70_Outlook_Express_message_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: message text Hi! How are you=3F I send you this file in order to have your advice See you later=2E Thanks ------147B2E70_Outlook_Express_message_boundary Content-Type: application/mixed; name=Book3_26.xls.pif Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=Book3_26.xls.pif Also, the terminating message boundary is identical to the others, instead of having a trailing -- as specified in 822 (I think). Looks pretty suspicious to me. I checked at Symantec, it's been recorded as the W32.Sircam.Worm, last updated this morning. The text containing the mail is the same, but the attachment name keeps changing. A Mc Afee scan does not detect it. Antialiasing in X

Folks, I have a query. Does the X server do antialiasing? Because whenever I try viewing the ps or pdf files the fonts are horribly rendered. And generally my X looks grubby. Is this a problem with any specific version of X? I have an accelerated (Mach64) server running with 32bit color depth. Also I have seen some GNU/Linux boxes with KDE 2 where the fonts were rendered properly. Is this the doing of KDE? I dont have KDE and run GNOME+Enlightenment/fwm. Pls suggest some lightweight desktop

I like GNOME and KDE but these are memory hungry desktops . Multitasking becomes little difficult due to this . Following is output of free while running XMMS and Kmail The values are in MB total used *free* shared buffers cached Mem: 60 59 1 0 1 29 -/+ buffers/cache: 29 31 Swap: 156 1 155 Notice the drastically low value of free memory. The situation is pretty much the same with GNOME. Please suggest some lightweight desktop environment which doesn't eat so much memory.
