Hi Everyone,
I am Abhishek from PyCon India team and really excited to annouce that we
have poster presentation this time in PyCon India 2019 !
Here is a chance to present a poster in PyCon India 2019 !
As announced earlier, the posters are yet another way of participating in
PyCon India 2019, which is happening on Oct 12-15, at Chennai. There are
two different poster types:
*Technical Posters* - for presenting projects and insights on various topics
*Community Posters* - for user groups / meetup groups to promote their work
Here are few good reasons to present a poster:
1. Posters offer the opportunity to engage with attendees interested in the
same subject and application as yourself. You might strike up a
conversation with someone about your poster that may lead to future
collaborations or even a job offer!
2. If you are new to conferences, or if you are intimidated about doing a
talk in front of huge audience, posters are for you. Posters are a great
way to test the waters, and can be stepping stone for your next talk at a
conference.
3. The entire conference attendees is available during the poster session,
as there are no other tracks scheduled in parallel. This makes it better
than the talk sessions, where there are multiple concurrent tracks, and
attendees can only attend one of them.
4. A poster presentation is a good way to disseminate your work,
particularly if your topic or project falls within a narrow field of
specialization. It also gives you the opportunity to actively engage with
others during the conference in a way that networking alone does not, since
by its very nature the poster defines the topic of conversation.
5. Another good reason to present a poster is that you can expect to
receive compliments on your work and critiques that can help you in the
future. An insightful, impartial discussion of your work by a peer can
often provide ideas for improving your work downstream.
In short, poster presentations provide value, both for attendees who
discuss your poster content with you, and for yourself because of the
opportunities highlighted above. If this has got you interested, head to
https://in.pycon.org/cfp/posters-2019/proposals/ for more details and to
submit a poster proposal.

We are very glad to make you know that the restructured IT syllabus of XI
standard is based exclusively on Open Source content. The books are now
available in the market. Around 1.5 lac students in Maharashtra will be
introduced to Linux and open source from this and successive years.
Although the recommended OS is Ubuntu 18.04, LTS, students can use any
other Linux Distro if they are interested. All screenshots are that of OSS.
This was indeed a major hurdle in migration with old textbooks.
The book follows the National Education Policy in ICT education in order to
make the education cost-effective, ethical and accessible to all.
This is undoubtedly the result of the seeds sown by our veteran founders of
ilug-bom.
We are incredibly fortunate to have your support in our journey of
restructuring the syllabus of IT for XI standard. This couldn't have been
achieved without your timely and valuable support.
The most substantial contribution is from Krishnakant Mane and his GNUKhata
team. The extensive training which the team provided gave BOS members
tremendous confidence, especially in the accounting software.
Special thanks to Prajakta Patkar, Karan Kamdar and Abhijit of GNUKhata
team.
Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Nagarjuna, Prof Khedkar, Prof Abhinav Jog,
Chandita, and Kasinath Guru.
We are thankful to Adv V P Patil, Adv Amardev Unniyal and Sudhakar Kashyap
for their help regarding PIL.
Thanks to Fr Jude and Sajida of St Mary High School, Sr Meena of Auxilium
High School, Gayathri Narayanan (SIWS College), Vidyadhar Mhatre,
Shrikrishna Joshi.
We are very much thankful to Sudhanwa Joglekar, Gaurav Pant and many other
members from PLUG.
We are thankful to Balbharti, Hon Director, Support Staff and of course to
all BOS team members (listed in the textbook)
We are thankful to Rushubh Mehta and Dr Nambiar, Director DBIT, for
providing space for ilug-bom meetings and FOSS events.
Words are not enough to express how grateful we are for the help you all
extended to us directly or indirectly.
Please accept our warmest thanks for your support. We hope to get the same
support in the years to come.
After this two year course, students join various graduation courses,
especially BSc(IT) recognized by Mumbai University.
These courses still use proprietary software on a large scale in the degree
college computer labs.
Although many degree colleges are struggling to migrate to open source,
they are held back due to some exclusive vendor based products in the
curriculum. We expect far more support in order to pursue this issue at the
university level.

Hello All,
I am fairly new to the group.
I am part of a team that runs an "Open Education"Â initiative, Tamarind
Tree <https://tamarindtree.org> at Dahanu (about two hours north of
Mumbai).
Our space is grounded on the open source philosophy, believing that
every learner must have access to high quality learning through Open
Educational Resources (OERs), enabling them to become life long learners.
Towards this, we have a combination of Open hardware (SBCs), open
gamified tools installed on our customised OS (Treebian!) and content
and courses hosted on an open LMS (My Big Campus
<https://mybigcampus.in> on moodle). Content is generated based on the
NCERT courses and being released under a CC-BY license. Its a DIY space
with all this being developed, run and managed in-house by a handful of
people.
The school is recognised by the Maharashtra Government, catering to the
local adivasi children from Pre Primary to Grade 8. We we will be going
up to Class 10. Its run in English.
We would he happy to host members of this group for a visit here or even
offer our space for meetings and share some of our challenges with
setting up an open digital model in a rural area. We serve food to the
kids, so hosting a group of 10-20 people is not an issue on a weekday.
The train takes 2 hours from Bandra and comes straight to Dahanu Road.
We are also looking for collaborations on the following fronts:
1. A Moodle and network administrator (can work remotely) (paid position)
2. People to come and volunteer and lead open source projects (building
weather station, Open Street Map, teaching imaging, etc) with our students
3. People interested in building educational content, learning videos,
games in open source.
4. Our students have been working on Scratch, but we need people for
mentoring and inspiration!
Please do let me know how to take this forward.
Regards
Michelle

Hi Everyone,
The CFP for posters is open!
Posters are graphical summary of projects or ideas. They are usually
presented with an A0 size poster, but any creative ways are always
welcome. The poster session provides an opportunity to network with the
conference attendees and acts as a starting point for further
discussions. While talks generally needs to appeal to a wide section of
the community, posters can cover niche topics.
PyCon India 2019 will be having a poster presentation session at post
lunch, day 1. During the poster presentation session you will be
provided with a poster board that can hold an A0 size poster, and a
table to place your laptop, for demos. Conference attendees interested
in your topic, will stop by, during which you can give them a brief
presentation / demo.
To submit your proposal and for more details visit
