At the end of installation did database got created? I donot about oracle 9 but with oracle 8i and glibc (I think Redhat > 7.3 and debain unstable both) had problems due to which sample database creation used to failed.
And now if i do now "dbstart" gives me following error "error in identifying controlfile, check alert log for more info" i checked lof and got the following lines there PMON started with pid=2 DBW0 started with pid=3 LGWR started with pid=4 CKPT started with pid=5 SMON started with pid=6 RECO started with pid=7 Mon Apr 5 14:56:40 2004 ALTER DATABASE MOUNT Mon Apr 5 14:56:40 2004 ORA-00202: controlfile: 'ora_control1' ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
Do check for this ORA-* messages at OTN/Google. Does control files exists? Does user oracle has permission to them?

Hi Rajeev,
Going from the error message that you have posted looks like either one of you control file has been misplaced or deleted. If the Control File has missing your Oracle will not Come up properly, because all database updates are posted on it. You could check for the error messages (codes) on otn.oracle.com you will get the exact steps that you need to do to rectify the problem
