The moral/ethical aspects of the patenting system is an open and completely different discussion.
Yeah we live in an imperfet world.
There are tremendous advantages of open source. But on what basis do you say that closed software are far more buggy ???
experience: 19 yrs using closed source tools and 3 yrs using linux tools for development. Except for one locally developed cad tool (1988 vintage which sreams under dos, and just manages to work under windows) every opensource tool that we use has proved to be superior.
Why makes such comments that have weak basis and which put the open source movement in bad light? Because this plainly makes out that the source may be open but the mind is closed
Puts open source in bad light why? I dont need to pander up to someone and win brownie points It is only in this forum that I critiise severly closed source and M$ since the members are quite open minded. further, responses both for and against provide a framework for presenting free v/s closed software in the correct perespective. As for my closed mind the above 19 yrs of battle and several thaousand reinstallaions and crash recoveries of windows has taken it's toll I suppose (not to mention the fact that development time and costs has been cut, performance of systems increased manifold, and great innovation is now possible using free software). Also the very encouraging reports (from personal friends using them) of crashes of XP and 2000 is helping the process along.
FYI, there have been IBM mainframes with "closed" OS as well as the software which have been running robustly for more than a decade in many a bank.
Know at least two banks where this is not the case. Also know several who have had to recreate the software when the original supplier folded up.
Yeah try explaining that to Billy baba.
I would love to, could you arrange a meeting please? I also hope he gives me some money...
No chance here, he isn't in my sphere of influence. However U could send him an email. just like u do to the developers of free software. Who knows he might even send u some of his gems of wisdom with a cheque.
